Which Side Is the Accelerator and Brake?
The brake pedal is on the left and the gas pedal (accelerator) is on the right. In a car with an automatic gearbox, these are the only two pedals, and both are operated with the right foot. In a car with a manual gearbox, the clutch pedal sits to the left of the brake, making the order from left to right: clutch, brake, accelerator. Two-Pedal Layout: Automatic Cars

The right foot operates both pedals. The driver presses the accelerator to speed up and moves the same foot left to press the brake to slow down or stop. The left foot rests on the dead pedal, which is a flat rest area built into the footwell to the left of the brake. The dead pedal gives the driver a stable brace point for the left leg, which helps maintain a comfortable driving position and provides support during hard braking or cornering.
Three-Pedal Layout: Manual Cars
A manual (stick shift) car has three pedals. From left to right, they are the clutch, the brake, and the accelerator. The left foot operates the clutch pedal only. The right foot operates the brake and accelerator, switching between them as needed. The clutch pedal is pressed to disengage the engine from the gearbox, allowing the driver to change gear. It is released smoothly to re-engage drive after the new gear is selected.
The brake pedal sits in the centre of the three pedals. It is still wider than the accelerator, just as in an automatic, and the right foot moves between the brake and accelerator in exactly the same way. Are the Pedals Reversed in Right-Hand Drive Cars?
No. This is one of the most common questions from drivers who plan to drive in a country where cars sit on the opposite side of the road. In a left-hand drive car (used in the US, Canada, and most of continental Europe), the driver sits on the left side of the cabin and the pedals are in the left footwell. In a right-hand drive car (used in the UK, Australia, Japan, India, and around 75 other countries), the driver sits on the right side and the pedals are in the right footwell. The pedal order stays the same: accelerator on the right, brake in the middle (or on the left in an automatic), clutch on the far left in a manual.
The accelerator is always closest to the door on the driver’s side, and the brake is always closer to the centre of the car. This means a driver switching from a left-hand drive car in the US to a right-hand drive car in the UK does not need to relearn which foot goes where. The feet do the same thing in the same positions relative to each other. What changes is the gear lever hand (right hand in left-hand drive, left hand in right-hand drive), the indicator stalk (swapped on some models), and the side of the road. Why the Layout Is Always the Same
The accelerator-on-the-right, brake-on-the-left layout was not always standard. Early automobiles in the late 1800s and early 1900s used a range of control arrangements, including hand-operated throttles, foot-operated steering, and brake levers on the outside of the body. The layout that became universal was driven by ergonomics and safety. The right foot is the dominant foot for most people, and placing the accelerator under it gives the finest control over speed modulation. The brake, which requires fast and forceful application in emergencies, sits next to the accelerator so the right foot can pivot from one to the other without lifting off the floor. The clutch, which requires smooth engagement but not the same speed as braking, sits to the far left for the less dominant foot.
By the mid-twentieth century, this layout was standard across every major manufacturer. Today it is codified in international vehicle construction standards, and no production car sold anywhere in the world deviates from it. This universality is a significant safety feature. A driver can rent a car in any country, sit down, and know exactly where the brake is without looking. That consistency saves lives in emergency braking situations where fractions of a second matter.
Should You Use One Foot or Two in an Automatic?
Every driving authority and road safety organisation recommends using the right foot only for both the brake and the accelerator in an automatic car. The left foot should rest on the dead pedal, not hover over the brake.
Two-footed driving (left foot on the brake, right foot on the accelerator) is not illegal in any US state or in the UK, but it is actively discouraged for several reasons. The most dangerous risk is pressing both pedals at the same time during a panic situation. A driver who brakes with the left foot and accelerates with the right foot is one startled moment away from stamping on both pedals simultaneously. The car receives conflicting instructions: full braking force on the front wheels while the engine drives the rear (or all four) wheels forward. The result is reduced braking effectiveness, overheated brakes, and unpredictable vehicle behaviour.
Resting the left foot lightly on the brake pedal also causes a problem that is invisible to the driver but visible to everyone behind them. Even slight pressure on the brake pedal activates the brake lights, which teaches following drivers to ignore the brake lights on that car. When the driver ahead actually brakes hard, the following driver has been conditioned to disregard the warning and reacts too late. This is a documented cause of rear-end collisions in traffic. The one exception to the one-foot rule comes from motorsport. Racing drivers in circuit and rally disciplines routinely use left-foot braking to maintain engine speed through corners and reduce the time lost in transitioning the right foot between pedals. This technique works on a race track with a purpose-built car, a harness holding the driver firmly in place, and thousands of hours of practice. It does not translate safely to road driving, where the speeds are lower, the margins are wider, and the consequences of pressing both pedals in traffic are far worse than losing a tenth of a second through a corner.
How to Position Your Foot on Each Pedal
Accelerator
Rest the heel of the right foot on the floor in front of the accelerator pedal. The ball of the foot presses the top half of the pedal. The heel stays on the floor as an anchor point, and the ankle flexes to modulate pressure. This heel-down position gives smooth, graduated control over throttle input, which is important for gentle acceleration, maintaining a steady speed on the motorway, and maximising fuel economy. Pressing the accelerator with the whole foot (heel lifted off the floor) is less precise and more tiring over long distances.
Brake
To brake, pivot the right foot to the left while keeping the heel on the floor (for light to moderate braking) or lift the foot entirely and place it flat on the brake pedal (for firm or emergency braking). The wider surface of the brake pedal accommodates the full width of the foot. In a genuine emergency stop, the driver should stamp the brake pedal hard and hold it. Every modern car sold in the US and UK is equipped with anti-lock braking (ABS), which prevents the wheels from locking under maximum brake pressure. The driver does not need to pump the brake. ABS does this automatically, and pumping the pedal on an ABS-equipped car actually increases stopping distance.
Clutch (Manual Cars)
The left foot operates the clutch by pressing the pedal fully to the floor to disengage drive, then releasing it smoothly and gradually to re-engage. The clutch requires a feel for the “bite point,” which is the position in the pedal travel where the clutch disc begins to grip the flywheel and the car starts to creep forward. This pedal misapplication is responsible for a substantial number of car park collisions each year, and it is more common in automatic cars where there is no clutch pedal to limit engine torque at low speed. Staying aware of which pedal the foot is resting on, and always covering the brake (hovering the foot over it without pressing) when manoeuvring at low speed, reduces this risk.
Another common mistake is riding the brake: resting the foot on the brake pedal while cruising. This keeps the brake lights on constantly, wears the brake components prematurely, and generates heat that can reduce braking performance when the driver actually needs to stop. The foot should be fully off the brake and resting on the accelerator or dead pedal whenever the car is moving at a steady speed.
