How Britain’s Heatwaves Are Silently Damaging Your Tyres and What to Check Before Any August Drive
UK roads have been subjected to extraordinary heat this summer, with surface temperatures exceeding 50°C in multiple heatwaves since May 2026. If your car has been sitting on the drive in recent weeks, or if you are planning a long motorway run to the coast or countryside this month, there is a specific, measurable risk to your tyres that most drivers have no idea about.
Dunlop Tyre Europe issued a formal warning on 7 August 2026 to fleet operators, retailers and motorists, stating that the combination of extreme temperatures, fully loaded vehicles and prolonged motorway journeys is significantly accelerating tread wear and placing compound strain on tyres, heightening the risk of thermal failure.
The warning specifically calls out routes where surface bitumen has been melting under the heat, including sections of the A12, A143, A30, A3 and B6362. These are not obscure back roads. Millions of drivers use them every week, and August holiday traffic will push volumes higher still.
Why Heat Is the Enemy of Your Tyres
Most drivers understand that a tyre can be damaged by a pothole or a kerb strike, but far fewer consider what heat does to a tyre over time. Rubber compounds used in passenger car tyres are engineered to work within a temperature range. As road surface temperatures climb above 45 to 50°C, softened asphalt creates a stickier, more unpredictable surface that generates more friction with the tyre. That friction creates heat inside the tyre itself, stressing the rubber casing and the steel belts within.
At the same time, air inside the tyre expands as it heats up. A tyre inflated to the correct cold pressure in your garage on a cool morning will have a noticeably higher pressure after driving 30 miles on a hot day. That increase is normal and manageable if the cold pressure was correct to begin with. But if cold pressure was already too high, whether because of over-inflation or a topped-up slow puncture that was never rechecked, the tyre becomes harder, less able to absorb road imperfections and far more vulnerable to sudden failure.
Heavily laden vehicles add another layer of risk. A family car packed for a week’s holiday, with luggage in the boot, items on a roof rack and five adults on board, may be operating at or near its maximum weight rating. Tyre load capacity is rated in kilogrammes per tyre, and that capacity drops in extreme heat. If the tyre was marginal before the load was added, it may be working beyond its design limits by the time you join the motorway.
Sven Boetzel, technical and service engineer at Dunlop Tyre Europe, said the company had seen a rise in heat-related tyre incidents on UK roads this summer, and emphasised that for heavily laden vehicles on high-temperature asphalt, pre-journey checks are not optional. They are essential.
The Five Checks to Do Before Any Long Drive This August
Check cold pressures against the manufacturer’s specification. Your vehicle’s correct tyre pressure is printed on a sticker inside the driver’s door frame or in the fuel filler flap, and in your owner’s manual. It will usually list a higher pressure for fully loaded vehicles. Check the pressure before you set off, when the tyres are cold, meaning the car has been stationary for at least three hours or driven fewer than two miles. If your car is fully loaded for a holiday, use the laden pressure setting, not the standard one. The difference can be 4 to 6psi, and running at the wrong pressure under load in hot conditions is a significant risk. Do not deflate an already hot tyre.
Inspect each sidewall for bulges, cracks or unusual marks. Crouching down and visually inspecting each tyre takes two minutes. You are looking for bulges, which indicate internal structural damage, and sidewall cracks, which suggest the rubber compound has deteriorated. Either of these makes the tyre potentially dangerous. A tyre with a sidewall bulge should not be driven on. Take the car to a tyre fitter before your journey.
Verify tread depth is comfortably above the legal minimum. UK law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre around its entire circumference. But 1.6mm is a legal floor, not a safe target. Tyre safety organisations including TyreSafe and the RAC recommend replacing tyres at 3mm, because braking performance degrades significantly below that level. In wet conditions, a tyre at 3mm tread depth stops 44 percent more quickly than one at 1.6mm. The fine for driving on a tyre below the legal tread depth is £2,500 per tyre and three penalty points on your licence. A 20p coin inserted into the tread groove with the Queen’s head facing downwards gives a rough indication: if any part of the head remains visible above the tread, the tyre is close to the legal limit.
Check your spare tyre pressure and condition. Many drivers check the road tyres and overlook the spare entirely. A spare that has sat deflated in the boot for three years is worthless at the moment you need it. Full-size spares should be inflated to the laden vehicle pressure. Space-saver spares, the smaller emergency spares found in many modern cars, typically need 60psi and must not be driven above 50mph or for more than 50 miles. Avoid driving on visibly softened or rippled asphalt. The summer heatwaves of 2026 have caused surface bitumen to melt on sections of several major routes. If you encounter a road with a rippled or unusually sticky surface, reduce speed. The risk from a pothole in softened tarmac is significantly greater than on a normal surface, and debris embedded in melted asphalt can cause sudden punctures.

A tyre-related breakdown on a motorway is not just inconvenient. It is dangerous. National Highways data shows that tyre failures are among the leading causes of live-lane breakdowns on motorways, which in turn contribute to fatal collisions. Thousands of drivers break down on the strategic road network every year due to tyre problems that were preventable.
If you experience a blowout on the motorway, do not brake sharply. Keep both hands on the wheel, allow the car to decelerate naturally, and signal carefully to the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area. If your car has run-flat tyres, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on maximum speed and distance after a loss of pressure. Most run-flats should not be driven at more than 50mph after deflation.

Dunlop’s warning is specific about the routes most affected by surface bitumen melting. The A30 in the West Country is the primary road for millions of people heading to Devon and Cornwall, a route that sees some of the highest August volumes in England. The A3 is a major artery connecting London to the south coast through Surrey and Hampshire. Each of these routes combines high traffic volume with the kind of long, uninterrupted sections where sustained high-speed driving builds heat progressively in the tyre.
The B6362 is a more regional route in Yorkshire, but its inclusion in Dunlop’s warning suggests the heat damage is not limited to major trunk roads.
Dunlop’s warning is directed at fleet operators and tyre retailers as well as individual motorists, and the company is explicitly urging companies with vehicle fleets to carry out pre-journey checks on all commercial vehicles before August runs. For fleet managers, the advice goes further: review tyre records, ensure no vehicle is running on rubber that is approaching the end of its service life, and increase inspection frequency during the hottest months.
Practical Guidance for the Rest of August
For most UK drivers, the practical implications of Dunlop’s warning are straightforward. Before any journey of more than an hour in the current conditions, spend five minutes checking pressures and doing a visual inspection. This is particularly important if your car has been stationary in direct sun, if you are carrying more passengers or luggage than usual, or if you have not checked your tyres within the past month.
If you are planning a longer holiday trip, consider having the tyres professionally checked at a tyre centre before you set off. Most major chains, including Kwik Fit, National Tyres and Halfords Autocentres, will check tyre pressure and tread depth without charge. A few minutes at a tyre centre before a 300-mile journey is significantly cheaper than the cost of a breakdown recovery call and a replacement tyre fitted at the roadside.
The combination of the UK’s hottest August roads in years and the weight of a fully loaded holiday car is precisely the conditions under which tyre failures happen. The warning from Dunlop is a timely reminder that the most basic vehicle maintenance, checking tyre pressure and condition, remains one of the most effective safety interventions available to any driver.
