  • Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has opened order books for the facelifted California campervan at £54,065 before VAT, or £66,334 once VAT and on-the-road costs are added.
  • The 245 PS 1.5 eHybrid 4MOTION versions cost £7,040 more than the diesels at every trim before VAT, and gain electric stationary air conditioning that runs for up to eight hours.
  • First deliveries are expected in early 2027, and the finance offers apply to orders placed by 5 January 2027.

Six Prices in Two Columns: What Each California Costs Before and After VAT

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles opened orders for the facelifted California on 4 November 2026. The range has three trims, Beach, Coast and Ocean, and each comes with a 150 PS 2.0 TDI diesel or a 245 PS 1.5 eHybrid 4MOTION. Every version carries two prices. The first is the basic RRP excluding VAT, correct at the time of publication. The second includes VAT and on-the-road costs, and it shows what a buyer pays to get the van registered and driving.

The diesels, all with a 7-speed DSG gearbox, run like this. The California Beach 150 PS 2.0 TDI costs £54,065 excluding VAT and £66,334 on the road. The Coast costs £58,340 excluding VAT and £71,464 on the road, and the Ocean £65,255 and £79,762.

The eHybrid versions pair the 1.5 eHybrid system with a 6-speed DSG and 4MOTION. The California Beach eHybrid costs £61,105 excluding VAT and £74,637 on the road. The Coast eHybrid costs £65,380 and £79,672 on the same two bases. The Ocean eHybrid, the dearest California on the list, costs £72,295 excluding VAT and £87,970 on the road.

The steps between trims are the same on both engines. Coast adds £4,275 to the Beach price excluding VAT, Ocean adds a further £6,915 on top of Coast, and Ocean sits £11,190 above Beach before VAT. The eHybrid premium is £7,040 at Beach, Coast and Ocean alike, again before VAT. On the road the premium is £8,303 at Beach and £8,208 at Coast and Ocean.

The gap between the two columns is wide. It runs from £12,269 on the Beach diesel (£66,334 less £54,065) to £15,675 on the Ocean eHybrid (£87,970 less £72,295). VAT at 20 percent on £54,065 comes to £10,813, which leaves £1,456 of on-the-road costs and other additions on the cheapest version. Anyone budgeting from the headline figure of £54,065 needs the second column before talking to a dealer.

Larger Headlights, Power Doors and a 12.9-Inch Screen

Volkswagen’s designers restyled the front end below the bonnet, and the LED headlights are larger. Power latching sliding doors and a power latching tailgate join the specification, with new alloy wheel designs from 17 to 19 inches.

The cockpit has been redesigned around a 12.9-inch infotainment screen that covers route guidance, media, smartphone connection and the camping monitoring functions. A 10-inch digital display sits in front of the driver. Phone charging comes in 25 W wireless or 60 W USB-C form, and the California gets its own fabric and trim scheme plus new ambient lighting. Volkswagen’s Caravelle relaunch in June carried a screen of the same size.

Paint choices rise to 19 across solid, two-tone and metallic finishes, with a black roof as an option. Grenadilla Black, Grey Brown, Reed Green and Sunset Red are new metallic shades, and the new two-tone pairings are Candy White with Grey Brown and Grenadilla Black with Sunset Red.

Volkswagen lists one feature as specific to the eHybrid 4MOTION. A new electric stationary air conditioning system cools, ventilates or heats the cabin for up to eight hours while the van is charging, parked or camping.

Travel Assist Reads Traffic Lights for the First Time

The newest generation of Travel Assist helps the driver change lane on motorways and, for the first time on the California, recognises traffic lights. Emergency Assist is built into the system and covers a driver who suffers a medical emergency: it guides the van to the hard shoulder or the outermost lane.

Both functions arrive through software and driver assistance updates to the model.

Finance, Servicing and the Vehicle Tax Line Buyers Should Check

Volkswagen is offering a Solutions Personal Contract Plan (PCP) from £549 a month and Business Contract Hire from £469 a month, for orders placed by 5 January 2027 at participating Van Centres. The contract hire deal is for business users only and has no ownership option. Both examples assume 10,000 miles a year, buyers must be 18 or over, finance is subject to status, excess mileage charges can apply, and Volkswagen can vary or withdraw the offers at any time.

The PCP example uses the California Ocean 150 PS 2.0 TDI over 4 years, with 47 monthly payments of £549.00. The on-the-road retail cash price is £79,762.00. A £5,000.00 deposit contribution from Volkswagen and a £16,511.82 customer deposit reduce the total amount of credit to £58,250.18. The optional final payment is £44,253.00, the rate of interest is 5.88% and the representative APR is 5.9%. The total amount payable is £91,577.82, which is £11,815.82 above the cash price and includes the £10.00 option to purchase fee payable at the end.

A buyer who keeps the van pays £16,511.82 up front, £25,803 over 47 monthly payments (47 times £549), then £44,253 plus the £10 fee, a total of £86,577.82 from their own pocket. The £5,000 contribution takes the sum to £91,577.82.

The contract hire example covers the California Beach 150 PS 2.0 TDI over 3 years: an initial rental of £2,814.00, which equals six monthly payments, then 35 monthly payments of £469.00. That totals £19,229 over the term, and the figures exclude VAT at 20 percent.

Every California also comes with the 5+ Promise at no extra cost: five services, three MOTs, a five-year warranty and five years of Roadside Assistance. The terms set limits. On the diesel and eHybrid models the service cover is five oil and inspection services, five pollen filters and three MOTs, and extra work including wear and tear is excluded. The warranty runs for the earlier of five years or 124,000 miles, with shorter periods for parts subject to wear and tear, six months or 6,500 miles for mechanical adjustments and one month or 600 miles for the windscreen. Volkswagen requires all servicing and warranty work to happen at a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle Authorised Repairer, and the AA administers the roadside assistance, which excludes parts, garage and labour costs above specified limits.

Vehicle tax needs a check too. GOV.UK sets an extra supplement on cars over £40,000 of £440 a year on any car or motorhome listed at more than £40,000, or more than £50,000 for an electric one. It applies for 5 years from the second time the vehicle is taxed, which comes to £2,200 over the period, and lifts the standard 12 month rate from £200 to £640. GOV.UK defines the list price as the published price before first registration and before any discounts. The cheapest California is £54,065 before VAT, above both thresholds, but GOV.UK tells buyers to check the list price with the dealer, and the dealer is the place to settle whether the car or motorhome rule applies to a given van. The first tax payment is set by CO2 emissions, and Volkswagen has published no CO2 figures for the California, so that cost has to come from the dealer too.

Order Dates and What to Settle With the Dealer

First deliveries are due in early 2027, with Volkswagen pointing to the summer season. An order for the PCP or contract hire rates must be in by 5 January 2027, which leaves roughly two months from launch day. Volkswagen’s Transporter eHybrid van arrived in July.

Before ordering, buyers need three numbers in writing: the on-the-road price in pounds including VAT, the list price used for vehicle tax, and the CO2 figure for the first tax payment. The six versions can all be configured on the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles website.
