Volkswagen Caravelle Returns to the UK with New Look and 12.9-Inch Display
Volkswagen is bringing back one of its best known badges. The Caravelle name, retired in the UK when the current model switched to the Multivan label, returns for 2026 as part of a mid-life update that also refreshes the California campervan. Both vehicles gain a redesigned front end, a much larger touchscreen, a fully digital driver’s display and the latest driver assistance technology, lining the cabin up far more closely with the all-electric ID. Buzz.
For families and campers, the important changes are practical rather than mechanical. A new 12.9-inch infotainment system sits alongside the Digital Cockpit instrument display, wireless phone charging is now standard and far quicker, and an upgraded Travel Assist system can read traffic lights and help with lane changes on the motorway. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK has not yet confirmed local pricing or first delivery dates, but the updates apply across the Caravelle and California ranges, including new Generation special-edition models.
The Caravelle Name Returns to Britain
Volkswagen dropped the Caravelle badge in the UK when the latest version of its people-carrying van arrived wearing the Multivan name, a label already used across much of Europe. The decision puzzled some long-term buyers, who had known the comfortable, seat-filled version of the VW Bus as a Caravelle for decades. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK is now reversing that call, reviving the Caravelle name in recognition of its standing among British customers.
The Transporter family has carried people and cargo on UK roads for more than 75 years, and the Caravelle has always been the passenger-focused member of the line-up, sitting above the working Transporter van and aimed at large families, taxi and private-hire operators, and anyone who needs up to seven seats with proper comfort. The 2026 changes do not alter that role. Instead they modernise the cabin and front-end styling while keeping the plug-in hybrid and combustion engine choices that buyers already know. Volkswagen quotes weighted combined CO2 emissions of between 60 and 73 g/km for the plug-in hybrid version, placing it in a company-car tax band that fleet drivers will want to check closely.

By splitting the range into clearly named trims and adding fresh special editions, Volkswagen is trying to make the Caravelle feel less like a converted commercial vehicle and more like a genuine alternative to a large SUV or seven-seat MPV. That positioning is where the new technology earns its place.
A New Face and a Bigger Screen
The most obvious update is at the front. Volkswagen has reworked the area below the bonnet with new LED headlights that are larger and more sharply drawn than before. The upper daytime running light now stretches across the lamp like an eyebrow, and on higher-specification versions a glass-covered horizontal strip links the two headlights and lights up to give the van a more distinctive face after dark. The designers say the new lamps also throw more light, spreading a brighter, more even beam across the road ahead.
Inside, the dashboard has been rebuilt around a new 12.9-inch central touchscreen paired with the Digital Cockpit driver’s display. Volkswagen describes the layout as a bridge to the electric ID. Buzz, which is a useful comparison because it tells buyers what to expect: clearer menus, sharper graphics and a more car-like feel than the outgoing cabin. For a vehicle that many owners will live with for long motorway journeys and family holidays, a faster, easier-to-read screen is one of the changes people will appreciate every day.
Comfort and Safety Upgrades Inside
The centre console has been restructured so that the optional electric sliding doors and the parking brake are now controlled by buttons. Wireless phone charging is standard and considerably more useful than before, with the charging pad growing in size and its output rising from 5 to 25 watts, enough to keep a modern phone topped up rather than slowly draining while it sits on the pad. The USB-C ports have also been upgraded, climbing from 45 to 60 watts per connection, and there are now USB-C sockets in the rear as standard for passengers in the second and third rows. Ambient lighting, including illuminated cup holders, rounds off the cabin changes.
On the safety side, the headline addition is an enhanced Travel Assist system. The latest version adds traffic light recognition and assisted lane changing, allowing the van to play a bigger role in steady motorway driving by reading the road ahead and helping the driver move between lanes. For drivers covering high mileages or towing on long trips, that extra layer of assistance can take some of the strain out of a long day behind the wheel.
California Campervans and the Rivals They Face

The California campervan shares the same front-end and cabin upgrades, and it also gains new Generation special-edition models. These come with a two-tone Candy White and Sunset Red Metallic paint finish reserved exclusively for the special editions, a detail that will appeal to buyers who want their camper to stand out at the campsite. The California has built a loyal following as a compact, drive-anywhere camper that doubles as a usable everyday vehicle, and the new technology keeps it competitive against a growing field of rivals.
In passenger form, the Caravelle competes most directly with the Ford Tourneo Custom and the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, both of which have moved upmarket in recent years with more car-like cabins and assistance technology. The California, meanwhile, faces the Ford Transit Custom Nugget and a wide choice of smaller, converted campers from independent specialists. Volkswagen’s update does not change the mechanical recipe, but a brighter cabin, a bigger screen and smarter driver aids help the Caravelle and California hold their ground in a part of the market where buyers expect more from every new model.
UK pricing, trim details and order dates are still to be confirmed. Buyers waiting on the return of the Caravelle name, or planning a California purchase, should expect those details closer to first deliveries, when Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK sets out the full range and on-the-road prices.
