CUPRA Raval Earns Five-Star Euro NCAP Rating Under Stricter 2026 Testing

The CUPRA Raval has earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating, becoming the sixth model in the brand’s range to hit the safety body’s top score and the first to do so under Euro NCAP’s stricter 2026 test protocol. The electric city car, priced from £23,785, joins the Leon, Formentor, Born, Tavascan and Terramar in CUPRA’s five-star line-up.

Euro NCAP overhauled its testing this year, adding checks that go beyond the moment of impact. Cars are now scored across four separate pillars: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection and Post-Crash Safety. The Raval scored 72% for Safe Driving, 77% for Crash Avoidance, 91% for Crash Protection and 95% for Post-Crash Safety, a spread that shows how much the new protocol leans on driver monitoring and emergency response alongside traditional crash performance.

What the Scores Actually Cover

The Crash Protection score, at 91%, measures how well the car’s structure and airbags shield occupants and pedestrians in a collision. CUPRA built the Raval with a strengthened body shell and an airbag package designed to lower injury risk for people inside the car and for anyone it hits.

Post-Crash Safety, the highest score at 95%, covers what happens after impact: an automatic emergency call system that alerts responders, plus software that manages the car’s electrical systems to reduce the risk of fire or further injury. For an EV built around a battery pack, that score gives buyers a real reason for reassurance around high-voltage safety after a crash.

Safe Driving and Crash Avoidance scored lower, at 72% and 77%. These pillars cover how well the car’s driver assistance systems work day to day: speed assistance, traffic sign recognition, lane support, autonomous emergency braking and monitoring of surrounding traffic. CUPRA fitted these using sensors built into the car rather than treating them all as optional extras.

The Entry Car Needs the Optional Safety Pack

Not every Raval reaches five stars on its own. The rating applies with CUPRA’s Safety Pack fitted, which adds Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control and Front Cross Traffic Alert. That pack comes as standard from the mid-spec Plus trim upward, so buyers choosing the entry-level car will need to add it as an option to match the five-star result achieved in testing. It’s a detail worth checking on the configurator before ordering, given how much the extra systems contribute to the Safe Driving and Crash Avoidance scores.

Pricing and Where It Sits Against Rivals

UK prices for the Raval start at £23,785 for the entry car with a 37kWh battery, rising to around £36,310 for the range-topping VZ Extreme with the larger 52kWh pack. CUPRA quotes up to 280 miles of range on the bigger battery, with a 10-80% rapid charge taking 23 minutes. None of those prices yet reflect the government’s Electric Car Grant, which CUPRA has applied for and which could knock up to £3,750 off eligible versions once confirmed.

That positions the Raval against the Renault 5, Mini Cooper Electric and the incoming Fiat Grande Panda, cars that compete on price and city-friendly dimensions rather than outright range. A five-star score under the tougher 2026 protocol gives CUPRA a real selling point against rivals tested under the older, less demanding system, and it should become a bigger differentiator as more small EVs reach showrooms through 2027.

The Electric Car Grant CUPRA has applied for offers tiered support depending on how a car’s battery was manufactured, with the strongest discounts going to models built using cleaner production methods. Confirmation typically arrives close to a model’s on-sale date, so buyers configuring a Raval now should check the live price before signing, rather than relying on the figures quoted at launch.

CUPRA’s Growing Five-Star Line-up

The Raval is the sixth CUPRA model to reach five stars, after the Leon, Formentor, Born, Tavascan and Terramar. Joost Kessels, CUPRA’s R&D chief officer, said vehicle safety sits at the centre of the brand’s engineering process “from the earliest stages of development to the final driving experience,” adding that the Raval’s rating “shows that bold design, electric performance and advanced safety can go hand in hand.”

The Raval is built at CUPRA’s Martorell plant in Spain, alongside the rest of the brand’s range. First UK deliveries reached customers this summer, and order books remain open across all four trims.

Why the Rating Stands Apart

Buyers shopping the cheaper end of the EV market often assume they’re trading away safety kit to hit a lower price. The Raval’s result argues against that: the car scores strongly on crash protection and post-crash response even at entry level, and it does so under a test regime Euro NCAP itself calls its toughest in over a decade. For anyone cross-shopping affordable electric city cars this year, that combination of a sub-£24,000 starting price and a five-star rating earned under the new 2026 protocol is a rare pairing, and one rivals launched before the rules changed can’t claim in the same way.
