Volvo XC60 and XC90 Add Long-Range Hybrids with 124-Mile EV Range

  • Volvo has launched long-range plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90, more than doubling the electric-only range of the outgoing hybrid models.
  • The new XC60 gets a redesigned front and rear end, a new interior, and Google Gemini built into its infotainment system alongside the extended-range hybrid powertrain.
  • Order books for both SUVs, including Black Edition trim, open today in selected markets, with production starting this autumn.

The School Run, the Motorway Commute, and No Petrol Station in Between

Volvo has fitted its best-selling XC60 and the larger XC90 with new long-range plug-in hybrid powertrains, the biggest increase in electric range either car has had. The new setup pairs a larger, floor-mounted battery with a stronger electric motor, so drivers cover more daily miles on electricity before the petrol engine switches on. Volvo puts the XC60’s electric-only range at up to 124 miles on a single charge under WLTP testing, and the XC90 at up to 99 miles. Both figures are more than two and a half times higher than the plug-in hybrids they replace. Volvo keeps the mild hybrid option on both cars too, so buyers who don’t want to plug in still have a hybrid to choose from.

A driver who charges at home overnight can cover most weekly errands, school runs and commutes on electricity alone, without a stop at a petrol station. The petrol engine stays on hand for longer trips, easing the range anxiety that put off some buyers of the shorter-range hybrids Volvo sold before.

A Sharper-Looking XC60, a Familiar XC90

The XC60 picks up the bigger visual overhaul of the two cars. Volvo has redrawn the front and rear ends, added a new grille, bumper, bonnet and front wings, and fitted new wheels. Volvo has also redesigned the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, a design signature dating back to 2013, giving them a cleaner, more technical look, and sharpened the horizontal lines on the tailgate, rear lights and rear bumper. Inside, Volvo has fitted a new dashboard and door panels, wood trim, and Cardamom-coloured ventilated Nappa leather, plus upgraded interior lighting.

Volvo has also fitted a fresh run of safety systems to the XC60: automatic emergency steering and braking, an alert that warns occupants of an approaching cyclist before they open a door, lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view. A new 11.2-inch touchscreen runs Volvo’s latest infotainment software.

The XC90 doesn’t get the same styling refresh, but keeps the traits that have made it one of the best-selling seven-seat premium SUVs on sale: three rows, a calm cabin and a strong safety reputation. Buyers can add a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and Volvo carries over the same extended-range hybrid powertrain and driver assistance systems from the XC60.

Google Gemini Joins the Cabin

Both SUVs are the first Volvos to offer Google Gemini, the AI assistant, built into the car’s software. Drivers can ask it to plan a route, find somewhere to stop, or manage messages using ordinary spoken language rather than fixed voice commands. Volvo will keep sending both cars software updates over the air after purchase, so features can improve after the car leaves the showroom rather than staying fixed at the point of sale.

Pricing, Availability and How It Compares

Volvo has opened order books for the new XC60 and XC90, including a Black Edition trim, in selected markets, with production set to start later this autumn. Volvo has not yet published UK pricing or a full specification list, and the WLTP range figures are preliminary and can shift once official testing is complete. Real-world range for any plug-in hybrid varies with speed, temperature, driving style and how the car is loaded, so drivers should treat the quoted figures as a ceiling rather than a guarantee.

Rival plug-in hybrid SUVs, such as the BMW X5 xDrive50e and Range Rover Sport PHEV, offer electric ranges in the 50-mile region under WLTP testing. If Volvo’s claimed 124 miles for the XC60 holds up once the car reaches UK showrooms, it would put the model well ahead of that class, at least until independent testing confirms the number in everyday driving.

Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo’s chief executive, tied the launch to the brand’s wider electrification push: “The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey. Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer.”

For existing XC60 and XC90 owners thinking about an upgrade, the extra electric range is the headline change. But the redesigned XC60 body and the Gemini-equipped infotainment system on both cars mean buyers get more than a bigger battery for their money. Anyone cross-shopping the segment should hold off on a final decision until Volvo confirms UK prices and specification, expected in the coming weeks as order books open locally.
