  • Stellantis is notifying owners of 844,027 Ram, Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge vehicles this month about a software defect that can stop the rearview camera image from appearing when backing up.
  • The recall spans 16 nameplates across four brands that all share the same radio hardware and software, and the company estimates the entire affected population carries the flawed code.
  • No Do Not Drive advisory applies, and the fix is a free software update delivered over the air or loaded from a USB drive at a dealer.

What 844,000 Ram, Jeep and Chrysler Owners Should Check Now

Stellantis is in the middle of notifying owners of 844,027 vehicles across the Ram, Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge brands about a rearview camera defect that federal regulators say violates a core safety standard. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under campaign number 26V531 on August 6, covers 16 different nameplates built for the 2026 and, in a few cases, 2027 model years. Owner notification letters began going out on September 1 on a phased schedule that runs through September 25, which means many affected drivers are receiving notice right now or will within the next two weeks.

Federal safety rules under FMVSS No. 111 require that a vehicle’s rearview camera automatically display on the dash screen the moment the driver shifts into reverse, regardless of what else was showing on the screen beforehand. On the affected vehicles, a software defect in the shared radio unit can prevent that automatic switch from happening, leaving the screen showing whatever the driver had selected rather than the view behind the vehicle. Stellantis estimates that 100 percent of the vehicles in the affected population carry the flawed software, which is why the recall reaches every one of the 16 nameplates rather than a smaller subset built during a narrow production window.

Which Models Are Affected and How Many

The recall’s reach across four brands makes it one of the broadest campaigns by nameplate count so far this year, even though the underlying fix is straightforward. The Ram 1500 carries the largest share at 211,114 units, followed by the Jeep Wrangler at 170,033 and the Chrysler Pacifica, spanning the 2026 and 2027 model years, at 131,681. The Ram 2500 adds another 108,804 vehicles. Several Jeep models make up a significant portion of the remainder: the Grand Cherokee at 49,036, the Gladiator at 39,738, the Cherokee at 33,047, the Grand Wagoneer at 26,225 and the Grand Wagoneer L at 10,379.

The rest of the population is spread across the Jeep Grand Cherokee L at 22,950, the Dodge Charger at 16,838, the Chrysler Voyager at 14,077, the Ram ProMaster at 5,539, the Jeep Compass at 4,119, the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid at 444, and a small handful of Ram ProMaster EV units. Every model shares the same core radio hardware and software package, so Stellantis did not need to identify a narrower defect pattern to determine which vehicles needed the fix. It simply covers the full production run of vehicles built with that shared system.

How Stellantis Found the Problem

The recall traces back to an internal investigation that began well before the public notification. Stellantis’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance group opened a review on May 7, 2026, after identifying a potential loss of rearview image display across the Ram, Jeep and Chrysler lineup. Through May and June, engineers examined warranty claims, field reports and customer assistance records to gauge how widespread the issue actually was in the real world, rather than relying only on lab testing. By July 15, the team concluded the condition likely amounted to a noncompliance with FMVSS 111, and the company’s Vehicle Regulations Committee made that determination official on August 6, triggering the formal recall filing with NHTSA the same day.

That roughly three-month gap between the internal investigation opening and the public recall filing is typical for software-based defects, where engineers need time to confirm a fix works reliably before pushing it to hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Unlike a mechanical defect that might require a part replacement scheduled individually at each dealer, a software fix can be validated once and then distributed broadly, which is part of why Stellantis moved to cover the full 844,027-vehicle population once the defect was confirmed rather than narrowing the campaign further.

What Owners Need to Do

Owners do not need to wait for a letter to find out whether their vehicle is included. VINs became searchable in NHTSA’s online recall lookup tool on August 20, well before notification letters started going out, so any owner of an eligible model can check their status immediately at nhtsa.gov/recalls. No Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory applies to this recall, meaning owners can continue driving their vehicle normally while the fix becomes available.

The remedy itself comes at no cost to the owner. For vehicles capable of receiving updates wirelessly, the fix can arrive as an over-the-air software update without a trip to the dealer at all. For vehicles that are not OTA-capable, dealers will load the update from a USB drive during a service visit. Owners who are unsure which category their vehicle falls into, or who have not seen an automatic update apply after checking their VIN as affected, should contact their local Ram, Jeep, Chrysler or Dodge dealer directly, or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for guidance on next steps.
