Toyota Recalls 20,991 EVs That Can Suddenly Lose Power While Driving

Owners of certain 2026 Toyota bZ, Lexus RZ and Subaru Solterra electric SUVs are getting recall letters this month over a software fault that can cut power to the wheels without warning, at any speed, on any road. Toyota, which built all three EVs on a shared platform, says the fix will not be ready until later in August, so the roughly 21,000 owners affected are being told to drive carefully in the meantime.

What’s Actually Going Wrong

The problem sits inside the electronic control unit that manages each vehicle’s high-voltage battery. That unit contains two separate chips, a battery control chip and a monitoring chip, and under certain conditions the monitoring chip can overwrite data the battery control chip just wrote to the same shared memory address. When that happens repeatedly, the memory fails an internal check, an “EV System Malfunction” warning appears on the driver’s instrument cluster alongside multiple other warning lights, and the electric drive system shuts down. The vehicle simply stops driving, according to the recall report Toyota filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Power steering and power-assisted brakes keep working even after the shutdown, so a driver can still steer and brake to reach the shoulder, but Toyota’s own recall notice warns the failure can strike “at any driving speed,” including on a freeway.

Toyota says it first found the flaw while running development tests on an unrelated plug-in hybrid model, then traced a related issue back to the bZ, RZ and Solterra after further testing this spring. As of early August, the company told regulators it was not aware of any confirmed field failures tied to the defect and had received only one related warranty claim, though it says every recalled vehicle is expected to have the fault.

The root cause is a timing conflict, not a physical part failure. Toyota engineers found that when they tested other EVs running similar battery-management software, a difference in how often the monitoring chip performed its write operation kept the same conflict from happening. That detail tells owners this is a pure software defect rather than a wear-and-tear issue, which is why Toyota can fix it with a reflash instead of replacing hardware, but also why the company cannot simply push the fix over the air the way it has with some past software updates.

Which Vehicles Are Covered

The recall covers three separate model lines built on Toyota’s shared EV platform:

  • 2026 Toyota bZ: 11,495 units, built between June 2, 2025, and April 9, 2026
  • 2026 Lexus RZ: 4,739 units, built between April 24, 2025, and January 20, 2026
  • 2026 Subaru Solterra: 4,757 units, built between September 17, 2025, and April 13, 2026

That comes to 20,991 vehicles total across all three brands, all sharing the same battery ECU design under three different badges. Owners can check whether their specific vehicle is included by entering their 17-digit vehicle identification number into NHTSA’s recall lookup tool at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The agency’s search does not always reflect a recall right away, as NHTSA typically updates its VIN database once manufacturers finalize notification paperwork.

The bZ, RZ and Solterra are Toyota, Lexus and Subaru’s shared entry into the mainstream electric SUV market, built together at the same plant on the same underlying platform in an arrangement that lets three brands split development costs on a single EV architecture. That shared-platform approach is common across the industry, from GM’s shared EV underpinnings to Hyundai and Kia’s joint battery architecture, and it means a single software or hardware flaw discovered in one badge can just as easily turn up in its siblings, as it has here.

The Fix Isn’t Ready, But the Letters Are Already Going Out

Unlike many recent EV software recalls, this one cannot be resolved with an over-the-air update pushed to the car overnight. Owners will need to schedule a dealer visit for a technician to reflash the battery ECU software, and that update was still being finalized as of early August. Toyota told NHTSA that owner notification letters would go out between August 3 and August 17, meaning many affected owners are receiving word of the recall this week, potentially before the software fix that resolves it is even available at dealerships.

The repair itself will be free of charge once it becomes available. In the meantime, owners who see the “EV System Malfunction” warning appear on their dashboard should treat it as a signal to pull over at the next safe opportunity rather than continuing to drive, as the vehicle can lose drive power without further warning after that message appears.

This is not the first time an EV owner has had to wait weeks or months for a software recall remedy while driving the affected car in the meantime. Automakers increasingly issue recalls as soon as they confirm a defect, even when the software patch is still in development. Federal law requires manufacturers to notify NHTSA within five business days of determining a safety defect exists, regardless of whether a fix is ready. That timeline protects owners’ right to know about a hazard quickly, but it also means recall notices sometimes arrive with a remedy date that is still weeks away, as is the case here.

Part of a Bigger Pattern in EV Recalls This Year

The bZ, RZ and Solterra recall adds to a string of electric vehicle safety actions in 2026 tied to software and drivetrain components rather than the traditional mechanical failures that dominated recalls a decade ago. NHTSA is separately investigating 1.2 million Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over a suspension component that can detach, and Ford recalled tens of thousands of Mustang Mach-E EVs earlier this summer over a cracked rear differential that could let the car roll away unexpectedly. As automakers push more vehicle functions into software and shared electronic control units, a single design flaw can now surface identically across multiple brands built on the same platform, as it has here across Toyota, Lexus and Subaru.

The bZ has otherwise built a reputation as one of Toyota’s more dependable EVs, with multiple nameplates from the automaker’s lineup earning segment wins in J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study. This recall does not change how the bZ was built or assembled; it targets a specific software condition inside a shared component, which is why the remedy is a code update rather than a hardware replacement. Owners should not read the recall as a sign of broader build-quality problems with the vehicle, though the inability to fix it remotely does mean a mandatory trip to a dealer that most current software recalls no longer require.

What Owners Should Do Now

Owners of an affected 2026 bZ, RZ or Solterra should watch for a notification letter arriving by mail through mid-August and contact their dealer to ask when the ECU software update will be ready to install, as the fix was not yet available at the time this recall was filed. Until the update is installed, it is worth avoiding the left or fast lane where possible: a sudden loss of drive power in heavy, high-speed traffic carries more risk than the same failure at low speed on a side street. Owners can also call NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 with questions, or check their VIN directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls for updates as Toyota’s remedy becomes available.
