Jaguar’s Reinvention Starts With a Blank Sheet of Paper
Jaguar has gone quiet on new models for a long stretch. The Type 01 ends that wait, and it does so with a car that looks nothing like the Jaguars that came before it. The brand unveiled the four-door GT at STORIED in New York’s West Chelsea neighborhood on October 6, with digital displays running across Times Square, DUMBO and the Lower East Side to mark the moment.
Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s managing director, called it a car built on “no compromise between design and engineering.” The name signals the shift: “Type” nods to the brand’s history, the “0” stands for zero tailpipe emissions, and the “1” marks the start of a new generation built around electric power alone.
Jaguar has sold no new models in some markets for well over a year while it rebuilt the brand around this single platform. That gap is unusual for a company with Jaguar’s history, and it puts real pressure on the Type 01 to land well. A failed relaunch after a long pause is a harder story to recover from than a slow sales month for an established nameplate.
Power, Range and Charging Numbers
The Type 01 sits on a new Jaguar Electric Architecture, running an 850-volt system that pushes output past 1,000 horsepower. Jaguar rates range at up to 400 miles on a charge, and with a 350kW charger, the car can add 200 miles of range in as little as 13 minutes. Those figures put the Type 01 ahead of most electric luxury sedans on sale today, where a 300-mile range and 150kW charging are closer to the norm.
Jaguar has not released a 0-60 mph time, how much the car weighs, or battery capacity. Those details typically surface closer to the order books opening, which Jaguar says will happen in early 2027.
The 13-minute charging claim counts for more in daily use than the horsepower figure does. A driver who stops for coffee on a long trip could leave with roughly half a charge back, assuming they can find a 350kW station. Those chargers are still rare outside major highway corridors in the US, so the number is as much a statement about where Jaguar expects this car to be driven as it is a spec sheet entry.
Pricing, Timing and What It Replaces
US pricing starts at $130,500 before options, destination or any other fees Jaguar has yet to confirm. Orders open in early 2027, and Jaguar expects the first customer deliveries in the second half of that year. The Type 01 is designed, engineered and built in the UK, shipping from Jaguar’s home plants to markets including the US.
That starting price places the Type 01 well above mainstream electric sedans like the Mercedes-Benz EQS or the BMW i7, and closer to low-volume grand tourers. Jaguar is betting that buyers who want a four-door GT with supercar-level power will pay for it, rather than chasing volume against cheaper electric rivals.
Jaguar has not confirmed a lease program, a trade-in incentive or any federal tax credit eligibility for the Type 01. Current federal EV tax credit rules carry income and price caps that a $130,500 sedan would likely exceed, so buyers should plan around the sticker price rather than count on a discount that does not apply. Jaguar dealers in the US will take the car on, though the brand has not said how many of its current retail locations will carry it at launch.
A New Look, Inside and Out
Jaguar designers started the Type 01 from a single line on a blank sheet of paper. The result is a low roofline, a long bonnet and proportions the brand says trace back to the E-type and XJS, two of its most recognized sports cars. Jaguar calls it the most aerodynamic and powerful road car it has built.
At the New York event, Jaguar showed off pieces of the development process rather than just the finished car: an aluminum cast of that original design line hanging from the ceiling, a section of test track with tire marks from what the brand says is hundreds of thousands of miles of validation driving, and a body panel the team nicknamed “the Impossible Panel” for how hard it was to put into production.
Jaguar has not shown interior photos or confirmed cabin tech, seat count or trunk space. Everything released so far covers the exterior, the platform and the performance numbers. A car built around a single-line sketch tends to make styling tradeoffs inside, so expect those details, along with real-world photos away from a stage lit for a product reveal, closer to the order date.
Florence Pugh Joins as Brand Ambassador
Jaguar named actor Florence Pugh as its first brand ambassador for this relaunch at the launch event. Singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro, who won Best New Artist at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, performed at the premiere, and chef Roze Traore built a menu around the brand’s relaunch theme.
Pairing a car launch with a celebrity ambassador and a live performance is standard practice for a luxury relaunch, but the scale here points to how much Jaguar has riding on the Type 01. It is the brand’s first production model on its new electric-only platform, and the one that has to convince buyers who stuck with Jaguar through a long pause between model generations that the wait was worth it.
Buyers interested in ordering will have to wait until early 2027, when Jaguar opens the books and, presumably, fills in the specs it left out this week: how much it weighs, acceleration and exact battery size chief among them.
Where This Leaves Current Jaguar Owners
Owners of older Jaguar models, the F-Pace, XE and XF among them, have had nothing new to compare their car against for some time. The Type 01 is not a replacement for any of those models directly. It is a four-door GT aimed squarely at buyers cross-shopping Porsche Taycans, Lucid Air Grand Touring models and the top trims of the Mercedes-Benz EQS, not the midsize sedan and SUV buyers Jaguar served before the pause.
That leaves a gap at lower price points that Jaguar has not addressed. The brand has said more models will follow on the same electric platform, but it has not given a timeline for anything below the Type 01’s $130,500 starting point. Shoppers who want a new Jaguar closer to where the XE used to sit will likely wait well past 2027 to find out what, if anything, fills that space.
