GM Recalls 26,541 Chevy Express and GMC Savana Vans Over a Loose Steering Nut

General Motors is recalling 26,541 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans built with a steering gear nut that was never tightened to spec, a defect that traces back to a broken part sensor at a single supplier. Owners of 2025 and 2026 Express and Savana vans should expect a letter from GM starting around August 10, 2026, telling them to bring the van in for a free inspection.

What Went Wrong

Every steering gear assembly on these vans includes a nut that has to reach a specific torque at the assembly plant to hold the steering components together correctly. GM traced the defect to Nexteer Automotive Group, the supplier that builds the steering gear assemblies, where a malfunctioning part sensor let some units pass final inspection with a nut that had only been tightened by hand. A nut that never reached proper torque keeps loosening the longer a van stays on the road, and if it separates entirely, the driver can lose steering control.

GM has not issued a “do not drive” order for this campaign, and the automaker has not linked the defect to any crash or injury. The company did find nine other field reports connected to the same condition, stretching back to June 2025, none of which involved an accident.

Which Vans Are Covered

The recall spans four production groups: 6,389 model-year 2026 Chevrolet Express vans, 14,615 model-year 2025 Express vans, 4,786 model-year 2025 GMC Savana vans, and 751 model-year 2026 Savana vans, for a combined total of 26,541 vehicles. GM’s recall number for this campaign is N262563570, covering the Express population, with a companion bulletin, N262563571, covering Savana vans. The NHTSA recall identifier is 26V399.

Vans built after June 1, 2026, are not part of the recall. Nexteer corrected the faulty sensor on May 29, 2026, and every steering gear assembly produced after that date has passed inspection with the nut properly torqued.

How the Defect Surfaced

A GM brand quality manager first flagged the issue on May 28, 2026, after a dealer reported a loose steering gear nut on a 2025 Chevrolet Express through the automaker’s internal Speak Up For Safety reporting program, a channel GM built specifically so dealers and technicians can escalate safety concerns quickly rather than letting them sit in routine service records. GM opened a formal product investigation four days later. Engineers pulled torque trace data from Nexteer’s production line and quickly narrowed down which assemblies had shipped with an undertightened nut, allowing GM to identify the affected VIN population using manufacturing and part trace records rather than waiting on a wider pattern of complaints to emerge.

What Drivers Might Notice

A loosening steering gear nut does not always announce itself immediately. Drivers can notice the steering wheel sitting slightly off-center when driving in a straight line, or a general loss of precision when turning, sometimes described as looseness or extra play before the front wheels respond. GM says either symptom is worth a service visit rather than something to watch and wait on, given that the underlying nut only gets looser with continued driving rather than settling into a stable position on its own.

Why Commercial Vans Carry Extra Risk

Express and Savana vans see heavier use than a typical passenger vehicle. Many operate as commercial and fleet vehicles, running daily delivery routes, contractor jobs, or shuttle service, which means they often rack up far more annual mileage than a family SUV. A defect tied to a fastener that loosens under sustained driving conditions is worth taking seriously on a vehicle that logs long hours on the road every week. Fleet operators running multiple Express or Savana vans on a single account should check every VIN in their fleet rather than assuming one clean inspection covers the whole group: each van was built from its own batch of steering gear hardware.

Why This Recall Skews Commercial Rather Than Consumer

Unlike a recall on a bestselling sedan or crossover, this one lands mostly on businesses. The Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana platforms compete for buyers who need a full-size cargo or passenger van, a category dominated today by contractors, delivery operations, shuttle services, and utility fleets rather than everyday commuters. Ford’s Transit and the Ram ProMaster fill the same role for other automakers, and GM has kept the Express and Savana in production largely to serve that upfitter and fleet market after most individual buyers moved toward SUVs and crossovers over the past decade. That means the average owner dealing with this recall is not a single driver checking their mailbox but a small business owner or fleet manager coordinating repairs across several vehicles at once.

GM’s parts and service network is built around that reality. Dealers who serve commercial accounts typically keep loaner vehicles or shuttle service available for fleet customers. A van sitting in the shop for a day represents lost revenue for a contractor or delivery business in a way that a family SUV in for service usually does not, which is part of why GM is pushing to get inspections scheduled quickly once the August letters go out.

That kind of turnaround is faster than many defect investigations, which can stretch across months as automakers gather enough field reports to confirm a pattern before acting. GM’s Speak Up For Safety program, which lets dealers escalate a single unusual repair straight to the automaker’s safety team, appears to have played a direct role in compressing that timeline. The program exists specifically to catch defects like this one, a single bad batch of parts, before they spread across a large share of production.

Owners of 2025 and 2026 Chevrolet Express or GMC Savana vans can check their VIN now at NHTSA.gov/recalls rather than waiting for the mailed notice. Dealers will inspect the steering gear assembly and replace it at no charge if the nut is found undertightened, and the repair is covered under warranty regardless of the van’s mileage. Fleet managers overseeing several affected vans should plan service visits in batches where possible. A dealership handling a cluster of commercial vehicles from one account can often turn appointments around faster than scheduling each van separately over several weeks.

A Reminder to Watch for Steering Symptoms Between Recalls

Even owners of vans built after the June 1 cutoff, and therefore outside this recall, can benefit from knowing the warning signs described here. A steering wheel that sits off-center, or a van that feels looser than usual when turning at low speed, is worth a service check on any vehicle, recall or not. Steering components are not designed to loosen gradually under normal use, so a change in feel is generally a sign that something in the system needs attention rather than something to attribute to a rough road or worn tires.

This recall also illustrates a broader pattern in how automakers build vehicles today. A single component supplier can affect tens of thousands of vehicles across multiple brands and model years when a sensor or a piece of test equipment fails on the production line, even when the vehicles themselves come off different assembly plants and carry different badges. Nexteer supplies steering components to several automakers beyond GM, though the company has not indicated the sensor problem behind this recall affected any other customer’s parts. For van and truck owners generally, that supplier concentration is one reason a defect first spotted at one dealership can turn into a recall covering vehicles nationwide within a matter of weeks rather than months.

GEM head of road safety James Luckhurst said: “We are long past the point of asking whether we should act. The evidence is overwhelming, and the consequences of delay are measured in lives lost and families devastated.” GDL is a phased approach that allows new drivers to gain experience under lower-risk conditions before progressing to full driving privileges. Common measures include limits on late-night driving and restrictions on carrying same-age passengers during the months after passing the test. International research consistently shows crash reductions of between 20% and 40% where GDL systems are in place. In some regions of Canada, reductions in young driver deaths have exceeded 80%. In the UK, drivers aged 17 to 24 account for around 20% of road deaths, despite making up just 7% of licence holders. Inexperience, distraction and overconfidence remain key risk factors - precisely the issues GDL is designed to address. GEM stresses that a well-designed system supports rather than penalises young people, and a recent TRL review1 found no significant negative impact on access to education, employment or social activity. GEM supports a system that extends structured learning, reduces known high-risk conditions and allows young drivers to build skills progressively and safely. GEM head of road safety James Luckhurst said: “We do many things well in the UK, particularly in driver training, but the current system offers too little structured support once someone passes the test. That’s where the real risk begins. “The choice is simple: continue with a system we know is failing too many young people, or take proven steps that will save lives. Doing nothing is not a neutral position - it is a decision with consequences… and Young Driver Focus offers a chance to translate the latest insight into real-world action.”
