If you own or recently owned a Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet, GMC, Ford or Lincoln, or you have had a car declared a total loss by State Farm, there may be money with your name on it. A wave of auto-related class action settlements is moving through the courts in 2026, and several are open for claims right now with deadlines this summer. Some pay a flat amount with almost no paperwork. Others reimburse hundreds or even thousands of dollars if you kept your receipts. The catch is that nobody calls to tell you. You have to find the claim and file it yourself before the window closes.

Below is a plain-English guide to the major auto settlements paying drivers now, who qualifies, how much is on the table, and the deadlines you cannot afford to miss. This is general information drawn from public court records and settlement notices, not legal advice, so confirm your eligibility on each official settlement website before you rely on any figure here.

Hyundai and Kia Airbag Settlement: $62.1 Million

The largest of the current settlements resolves claims that certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles were built with defective ZF-TRW airbag control units that could fail to deploy the airbags in a crash. Hyundai and Kia agreed to a $62.1 million settlement without admitting wrongdoing. The covered vehicles include certain 2010 through 2023 model year Hyundai Sonata, Kona and Veloster models and Kia Forte, Optima and Sedona models fitted with the affected control unit.

Class members can claim reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs tied to the airbag recalls, including rental car charges, towing, childcare, repair costs and lost wages. On top of that, the settlement provides residual payments of up to $350 for recalled vehicles and up to $150 for vehicles that were not recalled. Eligibility generally runs to current and former owners and lessees as of April 14, 2025. Claim deadlines have been reported as far out as March 29, 2027, with earlier dates attached to specific benefit categories, so check the court-authorized site at ACUSettlement.com/HyundaiKia for the deadline that applies to your claim.

Two State Farm Total Loss Settlements

State Farm is resolving more than one case over how it paid drivers whose vehicles were totaled. In Arkansas, the company agreed to pay $15.6 million to policyholders who filed a total loss claim between November 2016 and October 2021 where the payout was based on an appraisal report from Audatex. The proposed deadline to submit a claim in that case is August 19, 2026.

A separate Alabama settlement covers policyholders who filed a first-party total loss auto claim between November 7, 2018 and February 10, 2026 where the payment did not include the full purchasing fees owed. Eligible class members can claim a flat payment of about $20.50, with a claim deadline of July 15, 2026. Neither amount will change your life, but the Alabama claim in particular takes minutes to file and requires little more than confirming you held the policy and made the claim.

GM Diesel Fuel Pump and Ford EcoBoost Cases

Diesel truck owners have their own settlement. A General Motors case addresses the Bosch CP4 high-pressure fuel pump used in diesel versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The pump was designed for European diesel fuel standards and, the lawsuit alleged, did not hold up to American diesel, leading to premature wear and in some cases complete engine failure. Eligible owners generally must have purchased a 2011 to 2016 Silverado or Sierra diesel from a GM dealer after March 1, 2010. Reimbursement availability has been tied to seven states, namely California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas, with reported individual payouts in the range of $700 to $1,400 per vehicle. The total fund has been described differently across filings, so verify the current terms and your state’s status with the settlement administrator before counting on a number.

Ford owners should watch a consolidated case over certain EcoBoost engines. It covers drivers who bought or leased a 2013 to 2019 Ford Escape, a 2013 to 2019 Ford Fusion, a 2015 to 2018 Ford Edge, a 2017 to 2019 Lincoln MKC or a 2017 to 2019 Lincoln MKZ equipped with Ford’s 1.5-liter, 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Reported payouts range from $150 to $7,500 depending on which claim applies and how much documentation a driver can provide, and the claim window is expected to open in 2026 pending court approval. If you own one of these vehicles, set a reminder to check the official case site through the summer so you do not miss the opening.

How to File a Claim and Avoid Mistakes

Start by confirming your vehicle qualifies. You will usually need your VIN, proof that you owned or leased the car during the class period, and, for reimbursement claims, copies of receipts for repairs, towing, rentals or related costs. Flat-payment claims like the State Farm Alabama fee settlement often need nothing more than your policy details and a signed claim form. Always file through the official, court-authorized settlement website rather than a link that arrives by text or email, because fake claim sites have started piggybacking on real settlements to harvest personal and banking information.

Mark every deadline on your calendar the moment you confirm eligibility, since each case runs on its own schedule and a missed date usually means a forfeited payment. Keep a copy of your submitted claim and any confirmation number. If you have moved since you owned the vehicle, update your address with the administrator so a check or notice can reach you. And be patient. Settlement payments can take months to clear after the claim deadline while the court grants final approval and the administrator processes filings.

One last point worth remembering. Filing a claim in most consumer settlements does not cost anything, and you do not need to hire a lawyer to collect a standard payment. If a service offers to file on your behalf for a cut of your payout, you can almost always do the same thing yourself for free in a few minutes on the official site. The money is already set aside. The only thing standing between you and your share is the claim form and the clock.

Why So Many Auto Settlements Are Landing at Once

It is not a coincidence that several large vehicle settlements are open at the same time. Cases like these take years to wind through the courts, and a cluster of disputes filed in the late 2010s and early 2020s, covering airbag electronics, diesel fuel pumps, turbocharged engines and insurance payout practices, has reached the settlement stage together. Each one followed the same path: owners reported a recurring problem, regulators or attorneys gathered enough examples to show a pattern, and the company chose to settle rather than fight every claim in court. For drivers, the practical result is a rare window in which money is sitting in court-approved funds waiting to be claimed.

The reason so much of it goes unclaimed is simple. Notices get buried in junk mail or sent to old addresses, the legal language scares people off, and many drivers assume the payout is too small to bother with. That assumption is sometimes right and often wrong. A flat insurance fee claim might return twenty dollars, but a diesel fuel pump or EcoBoost claim backed by receipts can run into four figures. The only way to know which bracket you fall into is to look up your vehicle and read the actual terms.

Make it a quick annual habit. Once or twice a year, search your VIN and your insurer’s name against open class action databases, the same way you would check for safety recalls. Settlements that pay out today will be replaced by new ones tomorrow, and the drivers who collect are simply the ones who took five minutes to check.
