YouTuber Mat Armstrong gets a message from a friend of a friend: someone has crashed a McLaren 600LT in Greece and wants to sell. The photos look promising. The price is right. The only problem is that the car is 2,000 miles away and the owner’s insurance will not cover the claim.

No professional assessment, no engineer’s report, just a handful of WhatsApp photos and a gut feeling that the damage is fixable. The 600LT weighs just 1.3 tonnes, produces nearly 600 horsepower from the factory, and shoots flames from its top-exit exhaust. It is one of the most focused road cars McLaren has ever built. The battery is flat, the pyro fuse has blown (cutting power to the starter motor), the front left suspension has collapsed, the rear left wheel has been ripped from its mountings, and three of the four lightweight alloy wheels are destroyed. A side airbag has deployed, both seat belt pre-tensioners have fired, and a carbon fibre brake disc worth £1,400 ($1,750) is cracked clean through. Then comes the discovery that changes everything: shards of carbon fibre poking out from the monocoque tub, the structural backbone of the entire car. If the tub is compromised, the 600LT is scrap…
