  • A stop-start system that stays inactive is usually not broken: the car’s battery management system switches it off whenever the battery charge is low, the engine is too cold or too hot, or a door, bonnet or seatbelt is not secure.
  • If it never works at all, the battery is the first thing to test; a replacement costs £70 to £150 (about $93 to $199) for a standard battery and £120 to £400 or more (about $159 to $530) for the AGM or EFB type stop-start cars usually need, according to Bumper.
  • Fitting adds £30 to £120 (about $40 to $159) at a garage, and VARTA, a battery maker, says the new battery must be the right technology and correctly registered with the car, or the system can shut itself off again.

Why Your Car’s Stop-Start System Stops Working (and What a New Battery Costs)

Stop-start is designed to switch the engine off when you stop at lights and restart it the moment you lift off the brake. When it stops doing that, the first thing to know is that the car is often making a deliberate choice. The system only works when the car decides it is safe to cut the engine, and it has a long list of conditions that have to be met first. If any one is missing, the engine keeps running and nothing is wrong with the car.

Ford’s UK support page lists several of those conditions on its cars: the engine is still warming up, the system needs to keep the cabin climate comfortable, the battery charge is low, or the outside temperature is too low. Other manufacturers publish similar lists, so if your own car’s handbook has a section on stop-start, read it before booking a garage.

The Everyday Reasons It Stays Switched Off

VARTA, which makes car batteries, sets out the main reasons in its guide to why start-stop does not work. The battery management system, the small computer that watches the battery, disables stop-start when charge is low, so the battery keeps enough power in reserve to restart the engine. That explains why the feature can go missing when the battery is run down.

Temperature plays a part in two ways. VARTA says the outside temperature can be too high or too low for the system to operate, and the engine’s own temperature counts as well. A cold engine needs more starting current, and a hot engine needs the radiator fan, which draws a large current. In either case the car keeps the engine running. VARTA does not publish exact temperature cut-offs, as they come from each manufacturer’s settings, so there is no single number to check against.

Climate control is a third factor. VARTA says stop-start can stay active while the air conditioning output is reduced automatically, but whether that happens depends on the manufacturer. Ford’s page makes the same point from the other side: where the system needs to keep the cabin comfortable, the engine keeps running.

The rest of the list has nothing to do with the battery at all. VARTA names seatbelts not worn, doors or the bonnet not fully closed, a parking assistant that is active, and driving up a steep hill. If the system has gone quiet and the dashboard shows no fault, a quick check of those basics costs nothing.

When the Battery Is the Problem

If stop-start has stopped working across all conditions, including a warm day, a fully warmed-up engine and a good run on the motorway, the battery moves to the top of the list. VARTA says a battery that can only provide a small number of charging cycles can trigger a protective shutdown. It advises visiting a workshop soon if the system fails often or never activates, and a battery test will show whether the battery needs replacing.

Age plays a part too. RAC Mobile Mechanics says most Ford car batteries last around three to five years, and it links shorter life to frequent short trips, long periods without driving, extreme temperatures, heavy electrical use, charging system faults and regular stop-start driving. A battery in the second half of that range is a likely suspect when the feature disappears.

What a Replacement Costs

Bumper’s 2026 battery pricing guide puts a standard lead-acid battery at around £70 to £150 (about $93 to $199), depending on the vehicle. Batteries for stop-start or high electrical demand, usually AGM or EFB types, run from £120 to £400 or more (about $159 to $530). Bumper splits the market into three tiers: budget at £70 to £120 (about $93 to $159), mid-range at £100 to £180 (about $132 to $238), which covers EFB, improved lead-acid or entry-level AGM, and premium at £200 to £400 or more (about $265 to $530) for AGM or high-performance EFB.

RAC Mobile Mechanics gives a fitted price. Its average across all Ford models is £228 (about $302), with the Fiesta at £205.69 (about $272), the Focus at £228.79 (about $303) and the Kuga at £263.95 (about $350). Across all makes, it says a battery job typically costs £140 to £350 (about $185 to $464). The RAC adds that newer Fords with stop-start often need an AGM or EFB battery, which costs more than a traditional lead-acid one, with AGM the most expensive and EFB cheaper than AGM but still dearer than conventional.

If you buy the battery yourself, you pay only the battery price. A garage adds roughly £30 to £120 (about $40 to $159) in labour, according to Bumper, and the job usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. When you get a quote, check whether it covers only the battery or the labour as well.

Why the Right Battery and Registration Count

Fitting the cheapest battery that physically fits the tray can bring the original problem straight back. VARTA says the correct battery technology must be installed and correctly registered. If the car does not record the new battery’s technology or capacity, the battery management system can apply the wrong algorithm, and if the car does not recognise the battery as new, it might not deliver its full potential.

Bumper makes a related point: many modern vehicles require battery coding or have complex electrical systems, which makes professional fitting the safer route. Bumper does not give a price for coding, so ask the garage whether your car needs it and whether it is included in the quote.

Edge Cases: When It Is Worth Booking a Garage

Start with how the symptom behaves. If stop-start works on warm days and goes missing only on cold ones, the temperature and battery charge limits described above are the likely cause, and it is normal. If it used to work in all weather and now works rarely or never, the battery has probably aged out of its stop-start duty and deserves a test.

If a warning message appears on the dashboard, or the engine fails to restart after a stop, treat that as a fault rather than normal behaviour and book the car in soon. A restart that hesitates or fails at traffic lights is a different problem from a feature that simply stays off.

Finally, a few simple habits keep the battery in better health. Longer drives let the alternator top up the charge, so a run of only short trips is the fastest way to lose the feature. If a car sits unused for weeks, the battery runs down on its own, and the RAC lists long periods without driving among the causes of shorter battery life.
