Audi A3 Gains Panoramic Display and New Technik Trim From £28,650 for September

Updated Audi A3

Audi has given its A3 family a mid-life update that brings a new dashboard, a wider set of driver-assistance features and, for the first time on this generation, a cheaper way into the range. The updated car goes on sale at the end of September, with UK prices starting from £28,650 on the road thanks to a new entry-level Technik trim that sits below the familiar Sport, S line and Black Edition grades.

That starting figure is the headline for buyers, because the previous A3 had crept well clear of the £30,000 mark. Adding a lower rung to the ladder keeps the A3 competitive against premium rivals such as the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, while the rest of the changes are aimed at the cabin and the way the car drives itself in and out of parking spaces.

The update covers the whole A3 line-up rather than a single body style or engine. Whether buyers choose the five-door Sportback or the Saloon, a petrol or diesel, the e-hybrid plug-in, or the performance S3 and RS 3, every version now receives the new interior and the upgraded equipment list.

A New Cabin Built Around a Panoramic Display

The biggest change sits in front of the driver. The A3 now uses a completely new cockpit layout built around a curved display that combines an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit for the instruments with a 12.8-inch MMI panoramic display for the infotainment. It is the kind of widescreen setup that has already filtered down through the larger Audi models, and it gives the compact car a more modern look than the outgoing twin-screen arrangement.

Audi has redesigned the dashboard to suit. The decorative inlay is wider than before and runs in a continuous horizontal line from the instrument cluster across to the passenger door, which helps the cabin feel less cluttered. Buyers of selected models can pick from four material finishes, including carbon fibre, Dinamica microfibre and a black Impressum trim. The centre console has been reworked too, with the wireless phone tray reoriented so a smartphone sits more naturally within reach.

Audio gets attention as well. A new package improves bass reproduction, balances volume levels between different sources and cleans up the sound of compressed audio files. There is also a virtual surround sound option that simulates different acoustic settings, from a concert hall to a recording studio, for owners who treat their daily commute as listening time.

Easier Parking and More Driver Assistance

Much of the practical benefit in this update is reserved for parking. The A3 now comes with adaptive cruise assist plus, along with reverse assist that can retrace the car’s last few metres of travel if a driver needs to back out of a tight lane or driveway.

Step up to the S3 Vorsprung or RS 3 Carbon Vorsprung and the system gains park assist pro with a remote function. Using the myAudi app on a smartphone, the driver can step out of the car before it parks itself, or have it pull out of a space before they climb back in. Audi positions this as a help in narrow bays where opening the doors is difficult, whether the space is parallel or at a right angle to the road.

Those same two flagship versions also add trained parking, which lets the car memorise a specific manoeuvre. If a carport or garage is awkward to enter, the A3 needs to learn the route only once and can then steer, accelerate, brake and change gear by itself to repeat it. For drivers who tackle the same tricky entrance every day, it is the sort of feature that takes a small daily irritation out of ownership.

Petrol, Diesel and a Longer-Range Plug-In Hybrid

The engine choices carry over in familiar form. Petrol and diesel units are available with either 116 PS or 150 PS, covering the bulk of buyers who want a conventional compact hatch or saloon. Audi has kept the line-up broad so the A3 can serve as a low-running-cost commuter or a longer-distance diesel cruiser.

The most interesting powertrain for cost-conscious drivers is the A3 e-hybrid. The plug-in produces a system output of 204 PS and now travels up to 88 miles on electric power alone on the combined WLTP cycle, which is enough for most people to cover a typical week of commuting without burning any petrol. The battery can be topped up quickly too, with DC charging capable of a full charge in around 30 minutes. Audi has also raised the e-hybrid’s towing capacity to 1,700kg, an increase of 300kg over the previous version that makes it a more usable choice for caravan and trailer owners.

At the top of the range, the S3 and RS 3 keep their quattro all-wheel drive and the rear torque splitter that shuffles power between the back wheels for sharper handling. Both also gain new digital daytime running light signatures and specific badging within the Singleframe grille to mark them out from the standard cars.

Trims, Pricing and How the A3 Stacks Up

The new Technik grade is the change most buyers will feel in their wallet. By slotting in below Sport, S line and Black Edition, it brings the A3’s on-the-road starting price down to £28,650 and gives Audi a sharper entry point in a class where premium badges have drifted steadily upmarket. Sport and S line remain the volume choices for buyers who want more equipment and a firmer look, while Black Edition adds the darkened exterior detailing that has become a popular finishing touch across the Audi range.

Against its direct rivals, the refreshed A3 leans on its new widescreen cabin and the breadth of its powertrain choice rather than a single standout figure. The 88-mile electric range of the e-hybrid is strong for the segment and will appeal to company-car drivers chasing low benefit-in-kind tax, while the lower Technik price helps private buyers who simply want the badge without the bigger monthly payment.

Order books open ahead of the end-of-September on-sale date, and Audi has confirmed the full UK specification will be detailed closer to launch. For now, the combination of a more modern interior, smarter parking technology and a cheaper way in gives the A3 a clear set of reasons to stay on the shopping list for anyone weighing up a premium compact car this autumn.
