  • New Volvo XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids reach 78 and 73 miles of electric range, more than double what the outgoing plug-in versions delivered.
  • A larger floor-mounted battery and a stronger electric motor power both SUVs, and each one adds Google Gemini as a built-in voice assistant.
  • Volvo redesigned the XC60’s front and rear styling and added new safety systems; production starts this fall, with US deliveries beginning in early 2027.

Two of Volvo’s Best-Sellers Just Nearly Doubled Their Electric Range

Volvo has redesigned the plug-in hybrid versions of its two best-selling SUVs, and the biggest change sits in the floor. The new XC60 now covers up to 78 miles on electric power alone, and the seven-seat XC90 covers up to 73 miles. Volvo says both figures top every other plug-in hybrid sold in the US, and they land at more than double what the previous XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids could manage.

That range gap changes what a plug-in hybrid actually does for a driver. Most gas-electric SUVs in this segment cover somewhere between 25 and 42 miles on a charge before the engine cuts in, enough for a short commute but not much else. A driver plugging in the new XC60 or XC90 overnight can realistically run an entire week of school runs and errands without burning gasoline, then still have a gas engine on standby for a road trip.

Miles That Cover the Whole Week

Volvo credits the jump to a new battery pack built into the floor, with far more capacity than the outgoing unit, paired with a more powerful electric motor. The gasoline engine still steps in when the battery runs low or a driver needs the extra performance, and Volvo continues to sell mild-hybrid versions of both SUVs for buyers who don’t want to plug in at all.

“The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO at Volvo Cars. “Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer.”

A New Face for the XC60

The XC60 gets more than a bigger battery. Volvo reshaped the front and rear of the SUV, with a new grille, front bumper, hood and front wings, plus new wheel designs. The Thor’s Hammer LED headlights carry a refined light signature, and the tailgate, rear lamps and rear bumper pick up stronger horizontal lines.

Inside, a new dashboard and door panel layout pairs with wood trim and Cardamom-colored ventilated Nappa leather. The XC90 keeps its own cabin identity, built around Scandinavian materials and natural light, with an optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system for buyers who want a step up in audio.

Google Gemini Takes Over the Dashboard

Both SUVs run Volvo Car UX on an 11.2-inch center screen, and both now build in Google Gemini as their voice assistant. Instead of memorizing set commands, drivers can talk to the car the way they’d talk to a person, asking it to plan a route, find a coffee stop along the way or read out a text message. Volvo also keeps rolling out features after purchase through over-the-air software updates, so a car bought this year can gain new capability the following year without a dealer visit.

Safety Systems That Step In Before You Do

The redesigned XC60 carries Volvo’s latest active safety package. Sensors including radar and cameras watch for a potential collision and can warn the driver, brake automatically, or steer around an obstacle if there’s no time left to react. The system also watches for a cyclist approaching from behind before a door opens, a small feature aimed at a common cause of injury in parking areas and along curbside streets.

Driver assistance features add lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view for tight parking spots. The XC90 carries its own long-standing reputation for safety scores and keeps that focus as one of the pillars of the redesign.

Pricing, Timeline and the Competition

Volvo hasn’t released US pricing for the new long-range plug-in hybrids yet. Production of the XC60 and XC90 T8 AWD Long Range plug-in hybrids starts later this fall, and Volvo expects the first US customer deliveries in early 2027.

The move puts the XC60 and XC90 ahead of rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Prime, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Kia Sorento PHEV on electric range, all of which top out well short of 50 miles. For a buyer cross-shopping midsize and three-row luxury SUVs, that range advantage could be the detail that decides the sale, especially for anyone who charges at home and wants to skip the gas station most weeks.
