  • A cracked windscreen on a car fitted with driver assistance cameras can now cost up to £1,000 to put right once the recalibration is included.
  • Insurers paid an average of £283 for windscreen repairs in the second quarter of 2026, a rise of seven percent that the ABI links to the growing cost of resetting these cameras.
  • Checking a policy for glass cover before booking a repair, and asking the garage whether the car needs a workshop calibration or a longer road-based one, can cut hundreds of pounds off the final bill.

The Camera Behind Your Mirror Has Made Windscreens Far More Expensive

A stone chip that once cost a driver about £40 to fix can now trigger a bill running into four figures. The reason sits a few inches from the rear-view mirror: a small forward-facing camera that reads speed limit signs, watches lane markings and feeds the car’s automatic emergency braking system. On most cars built since 2022, that camera looks through the windscreen itself, and once the glass is replaced, the camera has to be told exactly where the road is again.

The Association of British Insurers reported that the average cost of a windscreen claim rose seven percent in the second quarter of 2026, reaching £283. The rise sits inside a wider trend the ABI flagged in its Q2 data release: the growing use of cameras, sensors and driver assistance systems in modern vehicles is pushing up the cost of repairs and replacement parts across the board. Windscreens are simply the most visible example, because almost every driver will need one replaced at some point.

Why a Simple Chip Now Needs a Full Recalibration

Calibration is the process that tells the camera precisely where it is pointing after a new windscreen goes in. A sensor sitting even a fraction of a degree out of alignment can misjudge the distance to the car in front, or fail to spot a cyclist at the edge of a lane, so manufacturers require every ADAS-equipped windscreen replacement to be recalibrated before the car goes back on the road.

Some cars need this done on a ramp in the workshop, using printed targets set up at fixed distances from the bumper. Others need the car driven on real roads at a steady speed for several miles so the system can re-learn lane markings and traffic signs as it goes. A number of newer models need both. Garages that lack the equipment for the workshop stage now regularly outsource that part of the job to a specialist, adding a day or more to the turnaround and a further charge to the invoice.

From 2022, EU and UK type-approval rules have required manufacturers to fit autonomous emergency braking to all new cars sold, and lane-keeping assist has followed close behind on most volume models from Ford, Vauxhall, Kia and Volkswagen. The ordinary family hatchback bought new today is far more likely to need a calibrated windscreen than the same model bought in 2019, even though the glass itself costs barely more to manufacture.

The Repair Bill Drivers Are Actually Seeing

Industry pricing guides put a standard windscreen replacement, with no camera involved, at £150 to £400 depending on the car and the glass. Add a camera that needs calibrating and the figure moves to £400 to £800. On premium models, or where the calibration has to be carried out by a main dealer using manufacturer-specific software, drivers have reported bills of £900 to £1,000 for a single windscreen.

A driver with a 2023 Volkswagen Golf or Nissan Qashqai fitted with adaptive cruise control and lane assist can expect the calibration alone to add £150 to £250 on top of the glass and fitting charge, according to figures compiled by windscreen comparison sites. Vehicles that combine a windscreen-mounted camera with a separate radar unit behind the front badge, common on many SUVs, often need both recalibrated together, which is where quotes climb toward the £1,000 mark.

None of this is spelled out clearly at the point most drivers first notice a chip. A windscreen crack often starts as a mark the size of a coin, and it is tempting to leave it. UK law already treats a chip in the driver’s line of sight as an MOT and roadworthiness issue if it grows past 10mm, and a hairline crack that spreads overnight in cold weather can turn a £40 repair into a full replacement with no warning.

No government body currently regulates what a garage can charge for ADAS calibration, unlike the fixed fee that applies to an MOT test itself. That leaves pricing to the open market, and independent glass fitters compete on both the speed of the calibration and the equipment they carry, meaning quotes for the same job can vary by more than £200 between one fitter and the next in the same town.

What Your Insurer Actually Covers

Most car insurance policies with full cover include glass protection as standard, and a growing number now specify that ADAS calibration is included within that cover. The catch is the excess. Some insurers apply a separate glass excess, commonly £75 to £140, that a driver pays regardless of who caused the damage. A handful of budget policies exclude calibration altogether or cap what they will pay towards it, leaving the driver to cover the difference if the garage charges more than the policy allows.

Checking the policy document for the words “ADAS calibration” before booking a repair takes a few minutes and can save several hundred pounds. If the wording is vague, a call to the insurer to ask directly whether calibration is included, and whether there is a cap, settles the question before the invoice arrives rather than after.

Motor insurers paid out a record £3.2 billion in claims support during the second quarter of 2026 alone, five percent more than the previous quarter, and rising repair costs such as these are among the reasons cited for premiums no longer falling as quickly as they were twelve months ago.

Can You Avoid Paying Full Price?

A small chip, caught early and away from the driver’s direct eyeline, can often still be repaired with resin rather than replaced, which avoids the calibration step altogether and typically costs under £60. Acting within a few days of the damage, before it spreads, is the difference between a resin repair and a full replacement.

Drivers who do need a full replacement can ask for a written quote that separates the glass cost from the calibration cost, and can ask whether the garage is approved by the vehicle manufacturer to carry out ADAS work. An independent glass fitter without the right calibration equipment may end up sending that stage to a main dealer at a higher rate than fitting the glass itself. Getting a second quote before booking, especially for anything outside a standard hatchback, is one of the few ways drivers can push back on a bill that insurers themselves describe as rising.

Drivers leasing a car or nearing the end of a finance agreement have an extra reason to act quickly. Finance companies inspecting a returned vehicle can flag an uncalibrated safety system as a fault, even where the glass itself looks fine, because the underlying camera has not been reset to the manufacturer’s specification. Keeping the invoice and calibration certificate from any windscreen work is worth doing for this reason alone, as it is the only proof that the system was put back to a roadworthy state.

With new car sales increasingly dominated by models that carry lane-keeping cameras and automatic braking sensors as standard, the cost of a cracked windscreen looks set to keep climbing well beyond the price of the glass itself.
