  • The 2027 Volvo XC40 adds a new sensor suite, including front and corner radars, a fresh front camera, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, to power automatic emergency steering and braking.
  • Google Gemini becomes the XC40’s onboard AI assistant, paired with a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen that needs fewer taps to reach key functions.
  • Production of the updated XC40 starts this fall, with US customer deliveries beginning in early 2027.

Volvo’s Best-Selling Small SUV Adds a Sharper Set of Eyes

Volvo built its reputation on safety, and the updated XC40 leans into that history with a sensor overhaul most owners will never see but should notice in how the car reacts. New front and corner radars, an upgraded front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and new parking cameras give the compact SUV a far wider view of the road around it.

That expanded field of vision feeds two new safety functions: automatic emergency steering and automatic emergency braking. If the XC40 detects a potential collision, it can brake hard, steer around the hazard, or do both, depending on which response gives the driver the best chance of avoiding an impact. Volvo also added Door Opening Alert, a system that warns occupants before they open a door into a passing cyclist or car, and expanded the optional Pilot Assist system with lane change assist for smoother, better-supported highway driving.

The 360-degree parking camera picks up an update too, switching to a 3D view that should make tight parking spots and low-speed maneuvers easier to judge.

Google Gemini Joins the Cabin

Inside, the biggest change is a new 11.2-inch touchscreen that replaces the previous display with a larger, sharper one. Volvo says the redesigned interface needs fewer taps to reach common functions like climate and media controls.

The bigger addition is Google Gemini, which now runs as the XC40’s built-in AI assistant. Drivers can talk to it in plain language to plan a route, find a place to stop, or manage messages without digging through menus. It is a real step up from a basic voice command system, and it puts the XC40 in the same conversational-AI territory as newer Volvo models like the EX30 and EX90.

Volvo is also adding a new wireless phone charger and a fresh interior option: Arianne Cardamom leather paired with Brown Ash wood trim, offered on the XC40 for the first time. Buyers who prefer a different look can choose Black Ash or aluminum trim instead, both paired with revised cabin lighting.

New Look, Familiar Shape

Outside, Volvo refreshed the XC40’s front end with a new take on its Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, a redesigned grille, and new front bumper, hood and front wings. The rear picks up new LED taillights, an updated tailgate, and a redesigned bumper. Buyers can also choose from new 18-inch, 19-inch, or 20-inch diamond-cut wheels.

Akhil Krishnan, interim lead for Volvo’s 30 and 40 Series, said the changes add up to the best version of the XC40 yet. “By enhancing the XC40’s design, technology and safety features, we’ve created the best version of the XC40 yet,” Krishnan said. “This already popular model is now set to continue being one of our best-selling cars for years to come.”

Like every current Volvo, the updated XC40 picks up new features over time through over-the-air software updates rather than requiring a trip to the dealership for every improvement.

When You Can Buy One

Volvo says the new XC40 enters production later this fall, with customer deliveries expected to start in early 2027. Pricing has not been announced. The XC40 remains one of Volvo’s best sellers in the US, going up against small premium SUVs like the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Volvo has not confirmed a firm US on-sale date beyond “early 2027,” and the automaker’s release notes that availability of individual features can vary by trim and by market. Some of the new connected functions, including elements of the Google Gemini integration, require an ongoing subscription once an initial trial period ends.

Why This Sensor Suite Is Different

Volvo has spent decades building its identity around crash prevention rather than just crash protection, and the XC40’s new sensor suite fits that pattern. Automatic emergency steering, in particular, is still rare on compact SUVs in this price range. Most rivals rely on braking alone to avoid a hazard, which can leave a driver with no way out if there isn’t enough room to stop in time. Pairing radar, camera, and ultrasonic data lets the XC40 choose between braking, steering, or both, based on which option actually clears the obstacle.

The Door Opening Alert feature addresses a smaller but common hazard in cities and busy parking lots: a passenger flinging a door open into a cyclist or a passing car. It’s a simple warning system, but one that speaks to how Volvo approaches safety updates across the range, layering small, specific fixes for real-world scenarios on top of the bigger sensor overhaul. Combined with the new 3D parking camera, the changes are aimed less at flashy new tech for its own sake and more at closing the small gaps where daily driving mistakes happen.

Volvo has not said how much the added sensor hardware, the new screen, or the Google Gemini integration will add to the sticker price, if anything. Buyers cross-shopping the segment will have to wait for official pricing closer to the car’s early 2027 launch to see how the updated XC40 stacks up against rivals on value.
