BMW Motorway Assistant Launches in UK, Lets iX3 Drivers Go Hands-Free

BMW has switched on a new hands-free driving feature for UK customers, letting BMW iX3 owners take their hands off the wheel on the motorway for the first time. The BMW Motorway Assistant supports Level 2 driving assistance up to the speed limit, with a top speed of 81mph, and can change lanes automatically once the driver glances toward the relevant mirror to confirm the move.

The system is available now as an option on the BMW iX3, either fitted from the factory on cars built from July 2026 onwards, or added retrospectively to existing cars through a ConnectedDrive software upgrade. BMW says the same technology will reach the upcoming BMW i3 and BMW X5, extending hands-free motorway driving beyond a single model for the first time in the brand’s UK range.

What Hands-Free Actually Means Here

BMW’s system falls under SAE Level 2, the same classification covering most advanced driver-assistance packages on sale today. The driver can remove their hands from the wheel, but the car still expects them to watch the road and take back control immediately if asked. The technology monitors the driver and will disengage if attention drifts.

The headline feature over a standard adaptive cruise and lane-keeping setup is the automated lane change. Rather than the driver signalling and steering the manoeuvre themselves, the iX3 completes the lane change on its own once it detects a deliberate glance toward the relevant wing mirror, treating that glance as confirmation the move is safe and wanted. It’s a small change in mechanics, but a meaningful one in how much the car is trusted to act on the driver’s behalf.

BMW’s system sits in a growing field of Level 2 hands-free packages built specifically for motorways rather than general road use. Ford’s BlueCruise and General Motors’ Super Cruise work on a similar principle in the US, restricting hands-free operation to pre-mapped divided highways where lane markings and traffic flow are predictable. BMW’s UK version follows the same logic, capping hands-free use at motorway speeds and the 81mph limit rather than opening it up to B-roads or town driving, where the risk profile is far harder for any camera-and-radar system to manage safely.

Why the iX3 Gets It First

BMW’s decision to launch Motorway Assistant on the iX3 rather than a combustion model reflects where the brand’s newest electronics and sensor suite sit. The iX3 already carries BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system and the sensor package needed to support Level 2 driving, and it won Premium Electric Car of the Year and Mid-size Premium SUV of the Year at the 2026 Auto Express New Car Awards. Auto Express judges praised the iX3 for combining a “clean-sheet electric architecture with a 500-mile range, ultra-rapid charging capability and the new Panoramic iDrive system”.

For existing iX3 owners, the ConnectedDrive route means the feature can arrive without a trip to the dealer, provided the car has the right hardware fitted. BMW has not published UK pricing for the Motorway Assistant option, either as a factory-fit or a software upgrade, though the brand typically bundles Level 2 packages with a wider driver-assistance suite rather than selling them as a standalone extra.

A Feature That Will Spread Across the Range

Bringing Motorway Assistant to the i3 and X5 signals BMW wants hands-free motorway driving to become a mainstream option rather than a halo feature reserved for one electric SUV. The X5 sells in far higher volumes than the iX3, so its arrival there will do more to put the technology in front of ordinary buyers. Rivals are moving in the same direction: Mercedes-Benz has its own Level 2 system rolling out on models including the updated Mercedes-Maybach GLS, while Ford and General Motors already offer comparable hands-free motorway systems in the US.

The wider July update from BMW Group UK also included a run of industry awards, among them Best Manufacturer at the Car Dealer Power Survey 2026 for the second year running and Best Electric Car for the iX3 at the T3 Awards. Those wins reflect a brand riding a strong run of form in the UK market. It’s the Motorway Assistant rollout that will count for more with owners driving the car day to day. It changes what the iX3 can actually do on a daily commute, not what a magazine panel thinks of it.

BMW has not confirmed timing for markets beyond the UK, though the phased rollout to the i3 and X5 suggests the brand intends to make hands-free motorway driving standard across its electric range over the next model cycle rather than a one-off. For now, the iX3 is the only BMW in UK showrooms that can offer it.

Owners considering the ConnectedDrive upgrade route should expect the usual pattern BMW uses for retrofitted software features: a one-off purchase through the ConnectedDrive Store, tied to the car’s VIN rather than a subscription. BMW has not confirmed whether Motorway Assistant will follow that model or launch as a subscription option, and pricing for both the factory-fit and retrofit versions remains unconfirmed in the UK at the time of writing.
