BYD has revealed the DOLPHIN G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid supermini built specifically for European buyers. The compact hatchback combines a 4.16 metre body with the brand’s Super Hybrid with DM technology, delivering a combined range of more than 621 miles (1,000 km) on a full charge and a full tank of petrol. Sales open across Europe in the coming weeks, with the full launch in June and first customer deliveries from the end of summer 2026.

For UK buyers, the DOLPHIN G DM-i is a meaningful arrival. It is the only supermini sold in Europe to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain with what BYD describes as meaningful pure electric range, and it is positioned at the heart of the B-segment that has historically belonged to the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Renault Clio. Pricing, specification levels and confirmed UK on-sale dates are still to be announced.

A Plug-In Hybrid Supermini Aimed at Commuters

The DOLPHIN G DM-i pairs a front-mounted electric motor with BYD’s Super Hybrid system. The pitch is straightforward. Short daily drives can run entirely on electricity from the battery, while longer journeys lean on the hybrid system to keep going without the range anxiety associated with a pure EV. BYD has not yet published the electric-only range figure in metric, but the brand is positioning the car as capable of handling typical daily commutes on battery power alone.

Total combined range is more than 1,000 km, which equates to more than 621 miles on a full tank and a full charge. That figure makes the DOLPHIN G DM-i a credible long-distance car as well as a city runabout, which is the proposition most plug-in hybrid buyers want but rarely get in this size class.

At 4.16 metres long and 1.825 metres wide, the DOLPHIN G DM-i sits squarely in the B-segment. That puts it slightly longer than a current Ford Fiesta but shorter than a Volkswagen Polo. The car carries best-in-class practicality according to BYD, although the brand has not yet released boot capacity or rear legroom figures. The DOLPHIN G DM-i is the first car BYD has developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe.

What BYD Said

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li framed the launch as a deliberate move on the most important segment of the European market.

“The European B-segment is one of the most important parts of the market, and with DOLPHIN G DM-i, we want to redefine what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric era. By bringing long electric range, intelligent hybrid technology and advanced digital features into an accessible compact vehicle, we are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and available to many more people across Europe.”

The strategic context is unmissable. BYD overtook Tesla in global EV deliveries during 2024 and has been expanding aggressively into Europe with the Atto 2, the Atto 3, the Seal and the Sealion. The DOLPHIN G DM-i takes the brand into the smallest, highest-volume segment in mainland Europe, and it does so with a plug-in hybrid rather than a pure EV. That is a calculated choice, because the supermini class still skews heavily toward combustion engines, and a PHEV bridges the gap for buyers who are not yet ready to commit to a full electric supermini.

How It Sizes Up Against the B-Segment

The B-segment is where most European car sales happen, and it is also where electrification has been slowest to take hold. The Renault Clio E-Tech full hybrid, the Toyota Yaris hybrid and the Honda Jazz e:HEV have led on electrified options, but none of them are plug-in hybrids. The DOLPHIN G DM-i therefore launches into a class with no direct rival.

Pure electric superminis are growing in number, with the Renault 5 E-Tech, the Citroën e-C3, the Hyundai Inster and the Fiat Grande Panda Electric all aimed at first-time EV buyers. The DOLPHIN G DM-i offers a different proposition. By keeping the petrol engine on board, BYD is targeting buyers who like the idea of running on electricity day to day but who cannot accept the long-distance compromise of a small EV. The combined 621-mile range is the headline number that should win those buyers over.

From a running cost perspective, plug-in hybrid superminis are unusual in this class. Company car drivers in the UK benefit from low Benefit-in-Kind rates on PHEVs with significant electric range, although the rates rise from April 2026. Private buyers benefit from charging at home for the bulk of their daily mileage while keeping a petrol fallback for longer trips. Both audiences should pay close attention to the official electric-only range figure when BYD confirms it.

What We Still Need to Know

Several pieces of information are missing. BYD has not yet confirmed UK pricing, trim levels, battery capacity, peak power, peak torque, electric-only range, charging speed, boot capacity or the launch interior specifications. The brand has said only that “full equipment levels and technical specifications will be issued in due course”.

BYD’s recent European pricing pattern offers a guide. The Atto 2 launched in the UK from £30,205, the Dolphin Surf at £18,650, and the Atto 3 at £37,705. The DOLPHIN G DM-i is positioned below the Atto 2 on size and ambition, so a UK starting price in the low to mid £20,000s would be in line with the brand’s strategy in the segment.

The car will go on sale across European markets in the coming weeks, with the first customer deliveries expected by the end of summer 2026. UK launch timing should follow the wider European rollout, although BYD has historically launched cars in the UK alongside the Continental Europe debut.

What Happens Next

BYD has set out a clear ambition with the DOLPHIN G DM-i: to make the B-segment the next battleground in its European expansion. The combination of a 621-mile combined range, a usable pure electric mode and a footprint that fits a UK driveway is unusual in this class, and it gives BYD a story none of the European-brand rivals can match without a redesign of their own.

For buyers weighing up their next car, our recent coverage of the planned UK driving law shake-up sets out the policy environment that supermini buyers will be navigating for the rest of the decade. The DOLPHIN G DM-i is BYD’s answer to that question. Full pricing, specification and UK on-sale details are expected with the official launch in June.
