Fix a Chipped Windscreen Fast, or Risk an MOT Fail and a Full Replacement Bill

If you have found a small chip or star break in your windscreen, book a repair now, not later. A resin injection repair takes about 20 to 30 minutes, costs £40 to £70 ($54 to $95), and on most fully comp UK car insurance policies the excess for a chip repair is waived completely, so it will not touch your no-claims bonus and can cost you nothing out of pocket. Wait too long and the chip can spread into a crack that spans the glass, at which point repair is no longer possible and you are looking at a full replacement for £150 to £450 ($203 to $608), plus a genuine risk of an MOT failure in the meantime.

Why a Small Chip Turns Into a Big Bill So Quickly

Windscreen glass is laminated: two sheets of glass bonded around a plastic interlayer. That interlayer keeps the glass in one piece if it shatters, but it also means a chip is a weak point that spreads under stress rather than staying still. Heat from sunlight, cold from an early frost, the flex of the car body over a speed bump, even the pressure change from slamming a door, can all be enough to walk a chip out into a crack overnight.

Speed counts for more here than most drivers realise. A chip repaired within a day or two, before dirt and moisture work their way inside it, bonds cleanly and is barely visible afterwards. The same chip left for a fortnight has usually collected grit and condensation that the resin cannot fully displace, so the repair is less effective and more likely to leave a visible mark or fail to stop the spread. Garages including Autoglass and Sandicliffe both flag speed as the single biggest factor in whether a chip stays a cheap repair or becomes a replacement.

What Actually Fails an MOT: Zone A and Zone B Explained

The MOT test does not fail every windscreen chip. The rules, set out in the DVSA’s MOT inspection manual, split the windscreen into two zones based on how much they affect your view of the road.

Zone A is a 290mm-wide strip of glass centred on the steering wheel, roughly the area swept in front of the driver. Any damage bigger than 10mm across in this zone is an automatic fail, as it sits directly in your critical line of sight.

Zone B is the rest of the area cleared by the wipers, everywhere else on the windscreen. Damage here has to be larger, over 40mm, before it fails. Damage outside the wiper sweep area entirely, such as right at the very edges of the glass, is judged differently again and rarely fails on size alone unless it compromises the structure of the glass.

A tester will also fail a windscreen for a crack that runs across a chip’s edge, for a chip in the process of spreading, or where a combination of smaller marks adds up to a serious obstruction, regardless of whether any single one would fail on size alone. In practice this means a chip under 10mm in your direct line of sight is legal to drive on today, but it is a poor idea to leave it there. It sits inside the zone that counts most for your ability to see the road, and it is one cold morning away from spreading into a crack that will fail the test.

DIY Repair Kits vs a Professional Repair

Home windscreen repair kits, sold for around £10 to £20 ($14 to $27), can work on very small, fresh chips in Zone B, away from the driver’s direct line of sight. They use a syringe and a UV-cured resin to fill the damage, following broadly the same principle a professional uses.

The difference is control. A mobile technician uses a vacuum and pressure system to draw air out of the chip before injecting resin, so the fill is more complete and the repair is stronger and less visible. A DIY kit relies on you creating that vacuum by hand with a plastic seal and plunger, which is far less reliable in a chip with an awkward shape or one that has already picked up moisture. For any chip in Zone A, or anything larger than a small bullseye, a professional repair is the safer choice, both for how the repair holds up and for the risk of getting it wrong on a part of the car that keeps the roof from collapsing in a crash.

Getting It Repaired: Cost, Insurance and Timing

Most UK insurers treat windscreen chip repair as a low-cost claim that does not affect your no-claims discount, and many waive the excess altogether to encourage drivers to fix chips before they need a full replacement, which costs the insurer far more. Check your policy documents or call your insurer before booking; some specify an approved network of glass repairers you need to use for the work to be covered.

Mobile repair services from firms such as Autoglass, National Windscreens and independent local glass specialists will typically come to your home or workplace, and the work itself takes well under an hour, with the resin cured by UV light on the spot. If your car has advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as lane-keep assist or automatic emergency braking, that use a camera mounted near the rear-view mirror, a chip repair alone will not usually require recalibration. A full windscreen replacement almost always will, adding £50 to £150 ($68 to $203) to the bill and a reason replacement costs so much more than repair whenever a repair is still possible.

Stopping the Next Chip Before It Starts

Most windscreen chips come from loose stone chippings thrown up by the tyres of the vehicle in front, on motorways, newly resurfaced roads and gravel farm tracks above all. Leaving a two second gap, or more on faster roads, gives flying debris more room to fall short of your glass instead of landing on it at speed. Following a gritter, a tipper truck or a trailer loaded with aggregate at close range is one of the most common ways drivers pick up a chip in the first place, so easing back is worth the few extra seconds it costs on a drive.

A windscreen with existing pitting or a very thin layer of grime also chips more easily than a clean one, as dirt trapped against the glass adds a slight abrasive effect under a stone strike. Keeping the glass clean and topping up washer fluid so wipers are not dragging grit across dry glass both help the windscreen absorb small impacts without marking. None of this stops every chip. It reduces how often you pick one up, and a windscreen that avoids chips altogether never needs the repair-versus-replace decision at all.

The Bottom Line for Your Next MOT

Check your windscreen the same way you would check a tyre: look at it properly, not just glance through it. If you spot a chip, note where it sits relative to the steering wheel and how big it is. Anything in that central 290mm strip, or anything approaching 40mm elsewhere, needs sorting before your next MOT, and ideally before it grows at all. A same-week repair booked through your insurer is usually free or close to it. A windscreen that fails your MOT means a retest fee on top of a replacement bill you could have avoided for the cost of a takeaway.
