GMC has pulled the cover off the redesigned 2027 Sierra 1500, the sixth generation of its full-size pickup, and the headline news for truck shoppers is under the hood. The new Sierra arrives with two brand new Small Block V8 engines, a heavily reworked cabin packed with screens, and an off-road flagship riding on 35-inch tires. GMC says the first examples will reach dealerships before the end of the 2026 calendar year.

For buyers, this is the truck that will sit alongside the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra and GMC’s own Chevrolet Silverado sibling at the top of America’s best-selling segment. GMC is holding back full pricing and detailed power figures for now, but the early reveal lays out enough to show where the Sierra is heading: more power, more luxury, and more technology than the truck it replaces.

A New Generation of V8 Power

The centerpiece of the 2027 Sierra 1500 is a pair of sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines, available in 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter displacements. GMC says both units use advances in combustion, cooling and control systems to improve refinement and performance, along with a new fuel injection system aimed at delivering usable power and torque across everything from the daily commute to towing and rock crawling.

The V8s are not the only choices. The lineup keeps an enhanced TurboMax four-cylinder, which GMC says delivers the highest standard torque in the segment, and a Duramax diesel that rivals do not currently match. Every engine in the range pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission. GMC has confirmed it will release detailed horsepower and torque numbers closer to the on-sale date, so the exact outputs remain to be seen.

“With the next-generation Sierra 1500, we’re bringing together a new generation of Small Block V8 power, precise off-road capability, and our most immersive cabin experience to date,” said Michael MacPhee, global vice president, Buick & GMC. “Denali Ultimate and AT4X solidify Sierra as the most powerful, most advanced and most luxurious trucks we’ve ever built. The next-generation Sierra is the truck all others will be measured against.”

Step Inside the Denali Ultimate

At the top of the range sits the Denali Ultimate, and it is where GMC has thrown most of its technology budget. The trim comes standard with the larger 6.6-liter V8, which GMC describes as the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class. The bigger story for everyday buyers, though, is the screen real estate. Denali Ultimate carries more than 60 inches of combined digital displays, which GMC says is the most of any truck in the segment.

That total includes a 16.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that can articulate and hide storage behind it, an 11.5-inch front passenger screen with its own cover for media and entertainment, a 12.2-inch driver information display, a 15-inch color head-up display projecting speed and navigation onto the windshield, and an 8.5-inch rear camera mirror that gives a clearer view behind a loaded bed. The articulating center screen is a genuine talking point, letting the driver switch between a full passenger display and a slimmer profile while keeping items tucked away.

Audio comes from a 16-speaker Bose Premium Series system that includes speakers built into the front head restraints. Material choices move the cabin upmarket, with available real wood trim, forged wood on the Denali Ultimate, an available panoramic sunroof, and a redesigned MultiPro center console that opens into a work surface. GMC also points to crew cab front head and leg room that leads the segment.

Perhaps the most useful inclusion is Super Cruise. Denali Ultimate comes with a three-year subscription to the hands-free driver assistance system as standard, and it now works while towing across more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada. GMC says no rival in the class offers hands-free driving with trailering, which could be a deciding factor for buyers who cover long highway miles with a trailer in tow.

“The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is an uncompromising, no-excuses truck which was purpose-built to conquer any task with an unmatched level of refinement, precision and capability,” said Mark Dickens, Executive Chief Engineer for Full-Size Trucks and SUVs. “Not only have we engineered these trucks to be incredibly fun to drive, but they’ll provide customers with the versatility to haul with confidence, tow with command, head off-road with conviction and arrive to dinner in style. The Sierra represents one of the most advanced and rigorous engineering development and validation programs GM has ever executed, we’ve taken premium trucks to a whole new level.”

AT4X and the Off-Road Hardware

Buyers who spend their weekends away from pavement get the AT4X, which GMC calls the most off-road capable Sierra AT4X it has built. The model rides on a Sierra-first set of 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires and gains new Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, tuned to absorb high-speed impacts and rough surfaces while keeping the truck composed.

The standout mechanical feature is a pair of front and rear electronic locking differentials, a combination GMC says no competitor in the class currently offers. Working with the truck’s drive modes, the e-lockers help find traction on loose or uneven ground. A two-inch suspension lift, a unique hood and a new front fascia give the AT4X a more purposeful look, while inside an exclusive Timber Mahogany colorway, heavily bolstered front seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel mark it out from the rest of the range. For those who want to push further, GMC will continue to offer the AEV Edition package on the 2027 Sierra 1500.

Trims, Availability and What Is Still Unknown

The full 2027 Sierra 1500 lineup spans Pro, Elevation, AT4, Denali, Denali Ultimate and AT4X, with each trim positioned to suit a different mix of work, recreation and luxury. GMC describes a new exterior with a more vertical grille, redesigned headlamps and taillamps with available welcome and farewell animations, available quad exhaust outlets and the brand’s signature lighting.

What GMC has not yet shared is the part most shoppers care about most: pricing. The current Sierra 1500 starts in the mid-30,000-dollar range and climbs well past 80,000 dollars for a loaded Denali Ultimate, and the redesigned truck is unlikely to get cheaper given the added technology. Detailed engine outputs, towing and payload ratings, and trim-by-trim equipment lists are all still to come, with GMC saying it will release that information ahead of the on-sale date.

GMC has also leaned on new trailering technology for the 2027 truck, building on a brand that has made towing aids a core selling point. Combined with the standard hands-free Super Cruise towing capability on the Denali Ultimate, the Sierra is positioning itself as a long-distance hauler that asks less of the driver. For families who tow boats, campers or horse trailers across state lines each summer, that blend of camera views, driver displays and assisted driving could prove more useful day to day than any single horsepower figure.

For now, the early reveal gives truck buyers a clear picture of where GMC is taking its volume seller. The first 2027 Sierra 1500 models are expected to land at dealerships before the end of this year, setting up a fresh round of competition against the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra. Anyone shopping for a full-size pickup in 2026 may want to factor the new Sierra into their plans before signing for one of the outgoing trucks.
