2024 Toyota HiLux GR Sport: 1600 orders and counting, wait times up to six months

Toyota Australia says it expects to sell 3500 examples of the new HiLux GR Sport off-road edition next year, as production improves – and wait times come down.

About 1600 buyers have placed a deposit for the 2024 Toyota HiLux GR Sport – the most expensive Toyota HiLux ever sold in Australia – since orders opened two months ago as the first examples arrive in showrooms now.

Toyota Australia says it forecasts 3500 annual sales of the GR Sport – equating to about five per cent of HiLux deliveries, based on last year’s results – which sits atop the range, priced from $73,990 plus on-road costs.

It is $3230 more expensive than the $70,760 Toyota HiLux Rogue – the current most expensive HiLux, which accounts for 13 per cent of the mix – and $9000 dearer than Australia’s last high-performance HiLux, the supercharged V6-powered TRD 4000SL of 2009 ($64,990).

The HiLux GR Sport available in Australia is different to previous iterations sold overseas, and brings more comprehensive suspension and styling upgrades, a power and torque increase (165kW/550Nm vs 150kW/500Nm), and shares the Rogue’s wider wheel track.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Sean Hanley told Australian media the company is forecasting better stock across its model range later this year and throughout next year after experiencing delays in the first half of this year.

Mr Hanley said the Japanese car giant expects the second half of this year to be its biggest ever – after posting a new monthly sales record last month.

Wait times for the HiLux GR Sport are currently estimated at four to six months, the Toyota executive said.

Meanwhile, Mr Hanley said there are no plans to spread the GR Sport’s 165kW/550Nm tune of the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder to other models, including the HiLux Rogue.

It is despite the introduction of the 165kW tune on the related Toyota Fortuner four-wheel-drive wagon in Thailand, in top-of-the-range GR Sport form.

The HiLux SR, SR5 and Rogue are due to gain 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance early next year – as standard or an option, depending on model – though Toyota Australia says the system does not meet its criteria for what defines a true Toyota ‘hybrid’, and will not brand it as such.
