Why NHTSA Is Investigating 1.2 Million Teslas Over Suspension Failures

Federal safety regulators are looking into a suspension part on nearly 1.2 million Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles after more than 150 drivers reported it breaking apart while driving, sometimes with no warning at all, leaving the car undriveable in the middle of a normal trip.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened a preliminary evaluation on July 31, 2026, after receiving 156 complaints alleging that the front lower lateral link, a suspension component that helps keep the front wheels properly aligned, can detach from the vehicle. The investigation covers 2018 through 2020 Model 3 sedans and 2021 through 2023 Model Y SUVs, spanning several years of production across Tesla’s two best-selling models.

The 1.2 million vehicle figure makes this one of the largest active investigations into any single automaker’s suspension hardware in recent memory, though the number reflects the total population of vehicles built within the covered model years rather than a claim that every one of those cars has the defect. NHTSA’s preliminary evaluation stage exists precisely to determine how widespread the underlying problem actually is within that larger population.

What a Detached Lateral Link Actually Does to the Car

The front lower lateral link connects the front suspension to the vehicle’s chassis and helps control how the wheel moves and stays aligned as the car turns and absorbs bumps. When it detaches, the affected wheel loses proper positioning, which NHTSA says can lead to a loss of steering control and, in every reported case so far, leaves the car undriveable. Drivers who experienced the failure needed the vehicle towed rather than driving it to a repair shop.

Most of the complaints NHTSA reviewed described the failure happening abruptly, with no dashboard warning or mechanical symptom beforehand. A smaller number of drivers reported hearing an unusual noise from the front of the car in the moments before the link gave way, which gives owners at least one potential warning sign to listen for, though NHTSA has not confirmed the noise as a reliable predictor across all cases.

How This Differs From Tesla’s Earlier Suspension Recalls

Tesla has dealt with front lower lateral link problems before, but on a much smaller scale. The company recalled roughly 2,800 2021 Model 3 vehicles for a manufacturing assembly error tied to the same component, and a separate 2023 recall covered 422 Model 3 units for a similar detachment issue. NHTSA has explicitly stated that the failures driving this new investigation extend well beyond the scope of those earlier campaigns and appear to come from a different cause than the assembly defects that triggered the prior recalls.

That distinction is important for owners trying to figure out whether their car was already covered. A Model 3 or Model Y that was never included in either of the earlier, smaller recalls is not automatically safe from the issue now under investigation. The current probe covers a broader population of vehicles across four model years combined.

What NHTSA’s Investigation Process Means for Owners

A preliminary evaluation is the first of several possible steps in NHTSA’s defect investigation process, not a recall. At this stage, the agency is gathering data to determine the scope, severity, and root cause of the reported failures. If investigators conclude the defect meets the threshold for a safety recall, the process typically moves to an engineering analysis before NHTSA can either negotiate a voluntary recall with the manufacturer or, in rarer cases, order one.

NHTSA has stated it is not currently aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities connected to the reported lateral link failures. That is a meaningful data point for owners deciding how urgently to act, though it does not mean the underlying mechanical issue is resolved or that further complaints won’t surface as the investigation continues.

What Model 3 and Model Y Owners Should Watch For

Owners of 2018 through 2020 Model 3 or 2021 through 2023 Model Y vehicles should pay attention to unusual clunking or knocking noises from the front of the car, any change in steering feel or alignment, or visible movement in the front suspension at a routine inspection. Most reported failures happened without warning, so there is no foolproof way to predict one in advance, but a car exhibiting any of these symptoms should be inspected by a qualified technician before continued driving.

Owners can file a complaint directly with NHTSA at nhtsa.gov if they experience a similar failure, which feeds directly into the same database investigators are using to scope the current probe. Filing a report does not just document an individual owner’s problem: complaint volume and detail are exactly what pushes an investigation from a preliminary evaluation toward a full recall.

It is a useful reference point for gauging whether a car’s mileage and age put it closer to or further from the range where most reported failures have occurred so far.

Owners planning a long road trip in an affected vehicle have no official guidance from NHTSA or Tesla recommending they delay travel. The agency has not established that the failure rate is high enough to warrant that kind of blanket caution. A pre-trip inspection that includes a look at the front suspension components, something many independent shops will do as part of a routine service, is a reasonable extra step for an owner who wants added confidence before a long drive rather than a requirement tied to the investigation itself.

A Year of Recalls for Tesla’s Best Sellers

The suspension probe is not an isolated data point in an otherwise clean year for Tesla’s two highest-volume models. Earlier in 2026, Tesla recalled 376,241 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles after the printed circuit board controlling electronic power steering assist showed an overstress condition that could cause a driver to lose steering assist momentarily when accelerating from a stop. Separately, Tesla issued a recall covering certain 2026 Model Y vehicles after finding the horn’s ground wire ring terminal could come loose enough to silence the horn entirely, a comparatively minor defect but one that still required a formal federal filing.

Taken together, the pattern shows federal regulators and Tesla’s own internal defect reporting catching a steady stream of hardware and electrical issues across the Model 3 and Model Y lineup this year, spanning steering assist, horn function, and now suspension components. None of these campaigns overlap directly with the current lateral link investigation, but they establish that this is not the first time in 2026 that owners of these two models have needed to check a VIN against a federal recall list. NHTSA separately closed a long-running investigation into Model 3 and Model Y power steering assist loss earlier in 2026, and lawmakers have pushed the agency to examine the company’s Full Self-Driving marketing claims. For owners, the suspension investigation carries the most direct, immediate safety relevance of the group: a component failure that can leave a car undriveable in traffic is a different order of concern than a software or marketing dispute, and it is the one worth watching for an update in the months ahead.
