GMC Rebuilds Its Full-Size Truck Around New Engines and Six Distinct Trims
GMC has released full pricing and specifications for the redesigned 2027 Sierra 1500, and the changes go well past a new grille. The truck arrives with new exterior sheet metal, redesigned interiors, three engine choices carried over from a rebuilt Small Block V8 family, and GM’s newest native infotainment system. Michael MacPhee, global vice president for Buick and GMC, described the truck as a full reset of the segment’s benchmark rather than an incremental update, and the spec sheet backs that up.
Six Trims, Each Built for a Different Buyer
The 2027 Sierra 1500 lineup runs six trims deep: Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate. GMC positions each one at a distinct type of buyer rather than treating them as a simple price ladder.
Pro sits at the work-focused end of the range, built for fleet and trade buyers who want capability without paying for comfort features they won’t use. Standard equipment still runs deep for an entry trim: the enhanced TurboMax engine, a 10-speed automatic, a 12.2-inch driver information screen, a 16.3-inch center touchscreen, a trailer hitch with a built-in brake controller, and an expanded standard safety suite that includes adaptive cruise control, front and rear park assist, rear cross-traffic braking, reverse automatic braking, blind zone steering assist and intersection automatic emergency braking.
At the top, Denali Ultimate turns the Sierra into something closer to a luxury SUV with a bed. Standard equipment there includes the 6.6-liter V8, a roughly 34-gallon fuel tank, 14-way power heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, a 16-speaker Bose Premium Audio system with head-restraint speakers built into the front seats, an 11.5-inch front passenger screen with its own articulating cover, a panoramic sunroof, Super Cruise hands-free driving assistance with trailering capability, a 15-inch head-up display, an 8.5-inch rear camera mirror, underbody cameras and 22-inch wheels.
New V8 Power, Plus a Diesel Nobody Else in the Segment Offers
The headline mechanical news is a sixth-generation Small Block V8 family, offered in 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter displacements. GMC pairs those with an enhanced TurboMax engine and, for buyers who want maximum towing range and fuel economy, a segment-exclusive Duramax 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel. That diesel option remains one the Sierra’s domestic rivals can’t match directly: neither the Ford F-150 nor the Ram 1500 currently offers a comparable turbo-diesel inline-six or V8 at this price point in their standard half-ton lineups.
GMC hasn’t published horsepower and torque figures for each engine in this announcement, but the strategy is clear: keep V8 power as the default expectation for a full-size truck buyer while giving diesel loyalists and efficiency-focused fleet buyers an alternative that doesn’t force a downgrade in capability.
AT4X Pushes Off-Road Capability Further
The AT4X trim gets the most attention among the off-road-focused variants. It comes standard with the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, a 34-gallon fuel tank, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, a 2-inch factory-installed lift paired with new Multimatic Jounce Control dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials and a panoramic sunroof. GMC adds a new Baja drive mode exclusive to this trim, tuned for high-speed desert running by adjusting throttle response, gear selection, damper behavior and stability and traction control for sand and loose surfaces.
That puts the AT4X in direct competition with trucks like the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 RHO, both of which built their reputations on factory-tuned desert running gear rather than dealer-installed lift kits. A Baja-specific drive mode brings the Sierra’s off-road electronics closer to that class of truck rather than treating off-road capability as an accessory package bolted onto a standard model.
What Each Trim Costs
GMC’s published starting prices below cover a 4-wheel-drive Crew Cab configuration and include the $2,795 destination freight charge. Pricing for other cab styles, box lengths, drivetrains and package combinations will differ.
- Pro: $51,295
- Elevation: $59,995
- AT4: $73,495
- AT4X: $85,495
- Denali: $76,795
- Denali Ultimate: $87,895
Those figures sit well above the roughly $36,900 starting price often quoted for the mechanically related Chevrolet Silverado 1500, though that comparison isn’t a like-for-like one. The Silverado’s cheapest listed price covers a base 2-wheel-drive Regular Cab, while GMC’s Sierra figures above all start from a better-equipped 4WD Crew Cab. Against the Ford F-150, which starts near $40,085 in its own base 2WD form, and the Ram 1500, which starts around $43,000, the Sierra Pro’s $51,295 starting point reflects GMC’s push to position the brand above Chevrolet on price and equipment rather than compete purely on the cheapest sticker in the segment.
Standard Safety and When It Arrives
GMC says the redesigned Sierra adds eight new standard content features across the lineup, and Super Cruise hands-free driving assistance comes standard on four of the six trims, bundled with three years of GM’s OnStar One connectivity plan. The safety suite that starts on the base Pro trim carries through the range, meaning the collision avoidance and driver assistance technology already listed above isn’t reserved for pricier trims.
GMC says the redesigned Sierra 1500 launches later this year, without naming an exact on-sale date in this announcement. Buyers cross-shopping full-size trucks now have the full price sheet and standard equipment list for each trim, even before the first ones reach dealer lots.
