GM Recalls New Silverado and Sierra EVs Over a Battery Fire Risk and Cracked Wheels
General Motors is recalling a small number of 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ trucks and SUVs over a battery pack fault that can raise the risk of fire, and separately recalling hundreds more Silverado EV and Sierra EV units over steel wheels that can crack. Both sets of notification letters go out September 14, and both repairs are free.
The Battery Recall: A Rare but Serious Defect
GM’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes an internal battery module component that was not secured correctly when the battery pack was built. A module that can shift out of place risks causing internal damage to the battery pack, and a battery in that condition carries a higher risk of fire, both while driving and while parked. The recall, filed under GM’s internal number N262562600, covers the 2026 Silverado EV, Sierra EV and Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL, all of which share the same battery architecture on GM’s Ultium platform.
The scale of this specific recall is unusual for the opposite reason most recalls make news: it covers only ten vehicles in the United States. GM has not said whether the defect was caught through a manufacturing quality check, a customer complaint or an internal audit. The small number suggests the company identified the affected build window narrowly, tracing it to a specific assembly shift or supplier batch rather than a defect present across the wider production run. Dealers will replace the entire battery pack on any affected truck or SUV rather than attempting to repair the internal component, which is standard practice for high-voltage battery defects across the industry.
Why Automakers Replace the Whole Pack Instead of Repairing It
Electric vehicle battery packs are sealed, high-voltage assemblies built from hundreds of individual cells wired together and wrapped in cooling and safety systems. Once NHTSA and an automaker agree a specific module inside that pack could be compromised, there is no practical way for a dealer technician to open the pack, inspect a single module and reseal everything to the same safety standard the factory used. The economics and the safety case both point the same direction: swap the whole unit.
That is expensive for GM, but it is the same approach Ford and Volkswagen took earlier in 2026 after their own high-voltage battery fire recalls. Volkswagen recalled more than 52,000 ID.4 electric vehicles across two separate NHTSA campaigns for battery fire risk, and Ford issued a recall covering roughly 24,690 Escape PHEV and Lincoln Corsair PHEV vehicles for a battery defect that could cause the vehicles to shut down and, in some cases, catch fire. Between the three automakers, more than 117,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were pulled back for battery fire risk in the first two months of 2026 alone.
Putting the Fire Risk in Context
Electric vehicle battery fires draw outsized attention relative to how often they actually happen. NHTSA’s own 2023 data found it takes roughly 7.2 million miles of EV driving to produce one fire, compared with about 18,000 miles for a gasoline vehicle to do the same. Conventional gas and diesel vehicles have made up the large majority of vehicles carrying an active “park outside” warning going back to 2021, and an estimated 3.2 million vehicles on U.S. roads currently carry an open park-outside recall of some kind, and the overwhelming share of them run on gasoline, not electricity.
None of that changes the seriousness of a genuine battery fire risk for the ten Silverado EV, Sierra EV and Escalade IQ owners affected here. It does mean the arrival of an EV battery recall should not be read as evidence that electric trucks catch fire more often than the gas trucks they are replacing on dealer lots. The data points the other way. What has changed is that EV battery defects, when they do occur, tend to draw a full-pack replacement and heavy media coverage precisely and the failure mode is less familiar to most drivers than a fuel line leak.
The Second Recall: Cracked Wheels
Separately from the battery issue, GM filed a recall on July 30, 2026 covering 952 Silverado EV and Sierra EV trucks, split between 513 Chevrolet units and 439 GMC units, over a steel wheel manufacturing defect. The wheels can develop hairline cracks at the disc vent holes, the small openings cast into the wheel to cut mass and aid brake cooling. A cracked wheel can fail without warning, most often under heavy load, raising the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the wheels and replace any that show cracking, at no cost to the owner. These notification letters also go out September 14, the same day as the battery recall letters, though the two defects are unrelated and were filed as separate campaigns.
What Owners Should Do
Silverado EV, Sierra EV, Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL owners should enter their VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls to check both campaigns. A given truck could be included in one, both or neither depending on its build date. Chevrolet owners can call 800-222-1020, GMC owners can call 800-462-8782, and Cadillac owners can call 800-333-4223 to confirm status and schedule a dealer appointment.
The battery recall covers only ten vehicles, so most Silverado EV and Sierra EV owners will find their trucks are not included. The wheel recall reaches a wider group and is worth checking independently. Owners who notice any unusual vibration through the steering wheel at highway speed should have the wheels inspected regardless of whether their VIN shows up in the recall database. A developing crack can produce symptoms before it becomes visible on a routine check.
Anyone shopping for a used Silverado EV or Sierra EV should run the VIN through NHTSA’s lookup before finalizing a purchase. Both recalls are recent enough that a private-party seller could easily not know their specific truck is affected, and a free dealer inspection before purchase costs the buyer nothing and can catch a wheel defect the previous owner never noticed.
How the Two Recalls Fit Into GM’s Broader 2026
GM has issued more individual NHTSA recall campaigns across its truck lineup in 2026 than in any prior year, spanning the gas-powered Silverado and Sierra alongside their electric counterparts. Earlier in the year, the company opened a separate investigation into 6.2-liter L87 V8 engines used in nearly a million Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs after owners reported engine failures even after an earlier recall repair, and a second engineering analysis covering more than 1.1 million vehicles equipped with GM’s eBoost brake system after complaints of brake assist loss. Neither of those campaigns is related to the Silverado EV battery or wheel defects, but together they point to a company managing an unusually large recall workload across its entire truck portfolio at once, gas and electric alike.
For a company that only began high-volume production of the Silverado EV and Sierra EV in the past two years, a battery recall this early in the platform’s life is not necessarily a red flag on its own. New vehicle platforms of every kind, gas or electric, tend to surface a handful of assembly-line defects in their first production runs, and the industry’s standard response, catch it fast, recall it fully and replace the part rather than repair it, is exactly what GM has done here for both the battery and the wheels.
What This Means If a Silverado EV or Sierra EV Is Not on the List
Owners whose VIN comes back clear on both recalls do not need to take any action, and there is no indication GM expects the affected build window to expand for either campaign. NHTSA’s database updates in real time, so a truck that is not currently listed will not suddenly become part of the recall later unless GM files an amendment, which the agency would announce publicly the same way it did the original filings.
Owners who want extra peace of mind can still ask a dealer to visually inspect the wheels at a routine service visit, even without an open recall notice attached to their VIN. Steel wheel cracking of the kind described in this recall tends to start small and grow slowly, and a technician who already has the truck on a lift for an oil change or tire rotation can check the disc vent holes in a few minutes at no additional cost.
