Ford Recalls 223,472 F-150 Trucks Over Fuel Tanks That Can Detach While Driving

  • Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickups from the 2023 through 2027 model years after finding that a front fuel tank strap may not be seated correctly, which can let the tank come loose or fall off while the truck is being driven.
  • The gap traces back to Ford’s own assembly plants, where cameras built to confirm each strap was locked into the chassis rail were not running continuously across part of the affected build window.
  • Dealers began notification on September 14, owner letters mail between September 21 and September 28, and the fix is a free inspection with a strap replacement for any truck that needs one.

A Fuel Tank That Can Come Loose at Highway Speed

Ford Motor Company has opened a new safety recall covering 223,472 F-150 pickups built between January 4, 2023, and August 27, 2026, after finding that the strap holding the front fuel tank to the chassis may not have been installed correctly. NHTSA lists the action as recall number 26V578; Ford’s internal number is 26S69. If the strap isn’t properly locked into place, the tank can shift and, in the worst case, detach from the truck entirely while it’s moving. Ford’s own filing describes the risk as a fuel leak, a possible fire, an engine stall from lost fuel supply, and a tank in the roadway that other drivers have to avoid.

The F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in the United States, so a recall of this size touches driveways, job sites, and dealer lots in every state. Ford says it isn’t aware of any crashes or injuries tied to the defect, and the company has not issued a Do Not Drive order or asked owners to park outside. Still, there’s no dashboard light that would warn a driver the strap has failed, which is why Ford is reaching every owner in the affected population directly rather than waiting for a complaint pattern to build.

What Went Wrong at the Assembly Plant

The front fuel tank strap connects to the chassis rail through a set of T-slots, and that connection is supposed to be verified by a camera system on the assembly line before the truck moves to the next station. Ford’s recall filing says those cameras were not in continuous use at F-150 plants across part of the build window covered by this recall, which allowed some trucks to leave the factory with the strap only partially seated.

Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group first looked into the issue on July 23, 2026, after global warranty data turned up a cluster of unsecured fuel tanks concentrated in trucks built while the camera checks had lapsed. As of late August, the company had logged 16 warranty claims worldwide connected to the condition, with a handful of claim dates going back to 2018, long before this recall’s production window even starts. Ford used that history to scope the population: rather than recall every F-150 built from 2018 on, engineers focused on trucks still early in their service life, as the pattern in the warranty data shows the defect tends to surface quickly if it’s going to show up at all. That’s also why trucks with more than three months on the road, as of August 27, 2026, are excluded from the recall population, even for trucks built inside the affected window. Ford’s Field Review Committee signed off on the recall on September 1, and the company estimates that only about 1 percent of the 223,472 trucks in scope actually carry the defect. The rest are included as there’s no way to tell which individual trucks have it without an inspection.

Which Trucks Are Covered

The recall applies to a single model line, the F-150, across five model years: 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027. The population is weighted toward recent builds and unsold inventory, so a meaningful share of these trucks are still sitting on dealer lots rather than in customer driveways. That’s true for shoppers as much as owners. Anyone buying a new or recently built F-150 in the coming weeks should ask the dealer to confirm the fuel tank strap has been inspected before taking delivery, as a truck built inside the affected window could still be sitting unsold and unrepaired.

The F-150 also carries heavy commercial and fleet use, from contractors to delivery operations, and fleet trucks are notoriously easy to lose track of once they leave a dealer’s direct line of sight. Fleet managers with F-150s built in this window should run their full vehicle list against the recall rather than waiting for individual notification letters, as a truck registered to a business address can take longer to reach through the mail than one registered to an individual owner.

Private used-car buyers face the same blind spot as fleet managers. A truck built inside the January 2023 to August 2026 window but bought secondhand from a private seller, rather than a franchised Ford dealer, won’t have been flagged the way a dealer trade-in would. Running the VIN before signing anything takes less than a minute at NHTSA.gov/recalls and costs nothing, and it will surface this recall along with any other open campaign tied to that specific truck, not just this one.

What to Do If You Own an Affected F-150

Owners can check their vehicle identification number at NHTSA.gov/recalls, where VINs tied to this campaign became searchable on September 14. Ford dealers will inspect the front fuel tank strap and replace it if it isn’t seated correctly, at no cost to the owner. There’s no need to wait for the mailed letter to schedule the inspection; any Ford dealer can look up a VIN and book the appointment immediately. Owners with questions can also call Ford’s customer service line at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 26S69.

Ford has not attached a Do Not Drive advisory to this recall, so owners aren’t required to stop driving their trucks while waiting for the inspection. Anyone who notices unusual fuel odor, a fuel gauge that behaves erratically, or visible movement or sagging near the tank area should treat that as a reason to get the truck inspected right away rather than waiting for a scheduled appointment.

A Rough Stretch for Ford’s Best-Selling Truck

This is the third distinct F-150 recall to surface in September alone. Earlier in the month, Ford recalled 47,587 F-150 and F-250 trucks over a rearview camera image that could fail to display, and separately recalled new Broncos and Mustangs built on shared engine components over a piston defect. Ford has recalled millions of vehicles across its full lineup so far in 2026, spanning more than a dozen separate campaigns from January on, a pace that has drawn attention from safety advocates who track how much of that volume traces back to assembly-line verification steps rather than parts failures out in the field.

For F-150 owners, the practical takeaway is simple, though the broader pattern is frustrating: this specific defect has a free fix, a low estimated failure rate within the recall population, and no reported injuries so far. The bigger risk sits with buyers and fleet operators who might not think to check a truck’s recall status before it changes hands, as a truck sitting on a lot or changing owners privately won’t automatically get inspected the way one does when a Ford dealer handles the paperwork.

Anyone unsure whether a recall applies to a specific truck, or who wants a full history of open and completed campaigns for any vehicle, can also call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. The hotline covers every manufacturer, not just Ford, and it’s a useful backstop for households with more than one recalled vehicle in the driveway this year, as fuel system and safety recalls have touched nearly every major brand selling trucks and SUVs in the United States in 2026.
