BMW iX1 and iX2 Qualify for £3,750 Electric Car Grant, Prices From £33,315

BMW has become the first premium German brand to land the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, pushing the price of an iX1 or iX2 down to £33,315 on the road and undercutting the petrol-powered X1 by more than £4,200.

The change means BMW’s compact electric SUVs now cost less to buy new than the combustion-engined models they sit alongside in showrooms, flipping the usual pattern where going electric adds money to the price rather than taking it away.

What the Grant Actually Saves Buyers

The government launched the Electric Car Grant in July 2025 as part of a £650 million scheme running through to 2030. The discount comes straight off the sale price at the point of purchase, so buyers don’t fill in any separate paperwork to claim it, the saving simply shows up on the invoice. The scheme works across two tiers depending on how a manufacturer’s production process is rated for environmental impact. BMW has now qualified for Band 1, the higher tier, worth £3,750, rather than the lower £1,500 available to Band 2 models with a less favourable rating.

To land in Band 1, a car’s price after the grant has to fall below £42,000, and BMW had to show its factories meet the government’s environmental standards, including proof of how much of their electricity comes from renewable sources.

BMW’s own figures show how far prices have moved across the range:

• iX1 eDrive20 Sport: was £43,555, now £37,065 before the grant, £33,315 with it applied
• iX1 eDrive20 xLine: was £45,555, now £39,065 before the grant, £35,315 with it applied
• iX1 eDrive20 M Sport: was £48,305, now £41,815 before the grant, £38,065 with it applied
• iX2 eDrive20 M Sport: was £49,705, now £41,815 before the grant, £38,065 with it applied

For comparison, a petrol-powered BMW X1 sDrive20i Sport costs £37,540 on the road, more than £4,200 above the equivalent electric iX1 once the grant lands.

Range hasn’t changed as part of this update. The eDrive20 motor pairs with a 66.5kWh battery, 65.2kWh of it usable, for up to 318 miles WLTP in the iX1, enough for most weekly driving between charges without needing a public rapid charger.

A New Cut-Price Entry Point for the iX2

BMW has added a new model to the range alongside the grant news. The iX2 eDrive20 Sport joins the lineup priced from £37,065 before the grant and £33,315 after it, matching the iX1’s starting figure exactly. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, gloss black Shadowline exterior trim and sport seats as standard, and it sells next to the existing M Sport-trimmed iX2 rather than replacing it.

Why BMW Qualified Ahead of Its Rivals

The grant rewards manufacturers who can show a clean production record rather than handing out a flat discount to every electric car on sale, and until now no premium German brand had cleared the bar for the full amount. BMW’s Regensburg plant in Germany, where the X1 and X2 family is built at a rate of more than 1,400 cars a day, draws part of its power from over 25,000 square metres of rooftop solar panels. BMW says the system generates an estimated 2.9 GWh a year, roughly the annual electricity use of 1,000 homes, and that evidence is what pushed the brand into the top grant band ahead of other manufacturers still working through the qualification process. Manufacturers also need independent validation of their emissions targets through the Science Based Targets initiative, plus proof that renewable sources make up a high share of the electricity used in production, a bar that kept most brands in the lower Band 2 tier through the scheme’s first year.

How the iX1 and iX2 Stack Up Against Rivals

At £33,315, the entry-level iX1 sits well below other premium electric SUVs of a similar size. The Audi Q4 e-tron starts at £46,260 and the Mercedes-Benz EQA at £49,760, putting both more than £13,000 above BMW’s grant-adjusted price. The closest rival on price is the Volvo EX30, a smaller car that starts at £32,850, only a few hundred pounds below the iX1, though it sits in a lower size class altogether.

That gap gives BMW a real opening in a segment where premium buyers have typically paid a large step-up to go electric. The grant runs to 2030, but eligibility is tied to production data that gets reassessed, so anyone planning to order should check current qualification before signing anything, rather than assume today’s price holds indefinitely.
