BMW Recalls 318,495 Vehicles as Overheating Starters Risk Catching Fire
BMW is recalling 318,495 vehicles in the United States after regulators linked a worn internal starter component to overheating and, in rare cases, fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall on July 23, and it covers a wide spread of BMW’s lineup along with one unexpected badge: the Toyota GR Supra, which shares its drivetrain with the BMW Z4.
Owners do not need to wait for a mailed notice to act. Anyone driving an affected car can check their 17 digit vehicle identification number at nhtsa.gov/recalls right now, and dealers are already scheduling free starter replacements.
What Is Actually Wrong With the Starter
NHTSA’s investigation traced the defect to an internal component inside the starter motor that wears down faster than it should. As that part degrades, the starter can draw excess current and overheat as the engine turns over. In most cases, a driver simply notices the car will not start. In more serious instances, the overheating starter can ignite nearby components under the hood while the key is turned, whether or not the engine actually fires.
Owners trying to gauge their own risk should keep that distinction in mind. The fire hazard is tied to the act of cranking the engine, not to normal driving once the car is running. Still, BMW and NHTSA are treating it as a safety recall rather than a routine service bulletin, which means the repair is mandatory and free regardless of vehicle age or ownership history.
Dealers will pull the old starter and install a redesigned unit. BMW has not published an estimated repair time publicly, but starter replacements on these platforms typically take a technician under two hours once parts are in stock. Given the scale of this recall, some owners in high demand regions could face a wait for parts to arrive.
Which Models Are Affected
The recall spans several BMW model lines built on shared architecture, plus the Toyota built version of that same platform.
The 2021 through 2024 BMW X3 accounts for the largest single group, with 210,748 vehicles covered, making it by far the most exposed model in the recall. The remaining vehicles are spread across the 3 Series sedan, the X4 coupe style SUV, the 4 Series Coupe, the 4 Series Convertible, and the Toyota GR Supra, which uses BMW’s turbocharged inline six engine and supporting electrical components under a joint development deal between the two automakers.
Toyota GR Supra owners are sometimes surprised to learn their car falls under a BMW recall notice, but the drivetrain, starter, and much of the electrical architecture in the Supra come directly from BMW’s Z4 roadster. When BMW issues a starter recall, Supra owners are almost always swept in at the same time.
Part of a Pattern of Starter Problems
This is not BMW’s first starter related recall in the past year, and the repeated visits to the same component raise fair questions about why the fix has not stuck. In September 2025, BMW recalled roughly 196,000 vehicles over a starter fire risk. In February 2026, the automaker went back to dealers again for about 87,394 cars with a related overheating concern. Then on July 14 of this year, BMW issued a separate recall covering 29,119 vehicles, most of them plug in hybrids, over a starter relay that could ignite even while the car sat parked and switched off, prompting a park outside warning for affected owners.
The July 23 recall is technically a different defect from the relay issue a week earlier. That recall centered on the relay that controls power to the starter circuit. This new recall centers on the starter motor itself. But the pattern of BMW returning to starter and starter adjacent hardware four times in less than a year suggests the automaker’s supplier base has struggled to fully resolve heat management in this part of the ignition system.
Taken together, the four recalls now cover well over 600,000 vehicles in the United States alone, spanning BMW’s most popular sedans and SUVs plus its hybrid lineup. Owners who received a notice for an earlier starter recall should not assume this new one does not apply to them. Each recall addresses a distinct part number and defect, so a car can legitimately be covered by more than one.
BMW is not alone in filing a heavy volume of recalls this summer. NHTSA logged 25 separate recall campaigns in the first two weeks of July 2026 across the industry, touching an estimated 1.41 million vehicles, pieces of equipment, and aftermarket parts. That pace reflects both stricter federal enforcement of the reporting window automakers face once a defect trend is identified and the growing complexity of modern vehicle electronics, where a single supplier component can ripple across several model lines at once, as this starter defect has for BMW.
Why the Fix Keeps Getting Reissued
Automakers rarely explain publicly why a redesigned part fails to solve a problem the first or second time around, and BMW has not offered a detailed public account of why the starter system keeps resurfacing in recall filings. What is clear from the NHTSA paperwork is that the September 2025 and February 2026 campaigns addressed a different failure mode than the two recalls issued this month. Regulators classify each defect by its own root cause, its own affected parts list, and its own remedy, which is why a car can pass through one starter recall clean and still turn up in the next one.
For owners, the practical lesson is to treat every BMW recall notice on its own terms rather than assuming a prior repair covers new campaigns. A dealer’s service record from an earlier starter replacement will not automatically clear a car from this July 23 recall. The part installed under the earlier fix is not the same part being replaced now.
The scale of this recall also raises a practical question for used car shoppers. Anyone buying a used 3 Series, X3, X4, 4 Series, or GR Supra from the covered model years should run the VIN through NHTSA’s lookup tool before completing a purchase. An open recall follows the car rather than the original owner. A dealer selling a used vehicle is not always required to complete outstanding recall repairs before the sale, so the responsibility can land on the new owner to schedule the fix.
What Owners Should Do Now

Until the repair is completed, owners do not need to stop driving the car. The risk is tied to starting the engine, not to operating it once it is running. Still, BMW and NHTSA are advising owners to prioritize scheduling the repair rather than treating the notice as routine junk mail, given how often this same system has needed attention.
Owners who already had a starter or starter relay replaced under one of the earlier 2025 or 2026 recalls should still check their VIN against this new campaign. NHTSA’s database will confirm whether the July 23 recall applies on top of any prior repair. The parts involved are not identical.
