The first new Subaru Impreza in six years brings new technology and a larger body – but there is no new engine, no hybrid, no more sedan, and significantly higher prices.

The 2024 Subaru Impreza hatchback is due in Australian showrooms in December 2023 priced from $31,490 plus on-road costs, up to $5200 more expensive than the model it replaces.

Subaru’s first new Impreza since 2016 – now a hatchback only – is larger than its predecessor, with fresh styling, new technology and a longer list of convenience and safety equipment than before.

However there have been steep price rises of $4000 to $5200 – or up to 16 per cent – which exceed the $1800 to $3000 price rises applied to its Crosstrek SUV twin for its new generation which arrived earlier this year.

And it is powered by a carry-over 2.0-litre petrol engine which – due to the larger body – is less fuel efficient than before, with the same power and torque outputs.

An Impreza hybrid is available in Japan, but it is not planned for Australia for the time being – and it uses the same ageing technology as the Crosstrek Hybrid sold here, which independent testing by Drive and other media outlets has found to provide negligible fuel savings.

The new Impreza will be sold exclusively as a five-door hatchback, as the four-door sedan body style – which accounted for less than 20 per cent of sales in Australia – has been dropped globally for the latest model.

There will be three model grades – 2.0L, 2.0R and 2.0S – priced from $31,490 to $37,990 plus on-road costs, or $4000 to $5200 more expensive than equivalent models in the old range.

Subaru has closed the price gap between the Impreza and its Crosstrek SUV sibling to $3500, from $5700 – in what could be a move to maximise profit on the hatchback as buyers shift to SUVs in greater numbers.

All Impreza models are powered by a 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine developing 115kW and 196Nm, sent to all four wheels through a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Claimed fuel economy in mixed (urban and highway) driving is listed as 7.5 litres per 100km for all models – compared to 7.2L/100km for the outgoing Impreza 2.0i-S on 18-inch wheels, and 6.6L/100km for cheaper models on 17-inch wheels.

Standard equipment in the base Impreza 2.0L includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dusk-sensing LED headlights, an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, cloth seats, six-speaker audio, wireless phone charging, and dual-zone air conditioning.

A full suite of advanced safety technology is now standard across the model range – including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which was previously reserved for high-grade 2.0i Premium and 2.0i-S models only.

Forward-facing autonomous emergency braking (AEB) has been standard across the Impreza line-up since the base-model 2.0i version of the old model was axed at the end of 2021.

Compared to the old 2.0i-L, the new base Impreza 2.0L gains blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse AEB, LED headlights, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (previously wired), and rain-sensing wipers, among other extras.

However it loses a leather-trimmed steering wheel and shifter – now reserved for pricier models – and compared to its 2.0i Premium predecessor, the 2.0R no longer has a sunroof and satellite navigation.

All models are covered by a five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, with maintenance now scheduled every 15,000km or 12 months, whichever comes first, rather than 12,500km/12 months.

The new Impreza measures 4490mm long, 1780mm wide and 1480mm tall, on a 2670mm wheelbase – 15mm longer overall, 5mm wider, no taller, and unchanged in its wheelbase. Boot space is quoted as 291L, down from 345L previously.

The 2024 Subaru Impreza is available to order now, ahead of first Australian showroom arrivals in December 2023.
