Meet a near-production preview of the first electric Lamborghini, a high-riding, two-door, four-seat coupe due to commence production in 2028.

The Lamborghini Lanzador concept has been unveiled in the US as a close preview of the Italian supercar specialist’s first electric vehicle, due in 2028.

The fourth model in Lamborghini showrooms – and its first electric car – adopts the unconventional form of a two-door, four-seat luxury coupe placed on tall suspension to look like an SUV.

More than 1000kW – equivalent to two Lamborghini Huracan V10 supercars – is on tap in the concept, which is said to be a “concrete preview” of the showroom version Lamborghini plans to unveil in 2028.

It is the last four-seat Lamborghini coupe since the Urraco ended production in 1979.

The Lanzador measures 1.5 metres tall – about 350mm higher than a Huracan, but 150mm lower than a Lamborghini Urus SUV, and a touch taller than a Toyota Corolla hatchback.

Its design is said to be “inspired by spaceships”, and borrows cues from other new Lamborghini models, including the sharp body lines, smooth curve of the roof, and angular front air intakes.

Lamborghini says the headlights and tail-lights are inspired by the Countach LPI800-4 retro remake unveiled in 2021 – particularly the hexagonal tail-light signatures – while the wheels measure 23 inches, tied with the Urus for the largest ever on a Lamborghini.

Inside, the spaceship inspiration continues with separated areas for the driver and front passenger, with large displays ahead of both occupants – split by a floating centre console that includes the ‘Anima’ drive mode selector.

The rear seats can adjust and fold to expand the boot, which is joined by a storage area under the front ‘bonnet’.

Among the materials used is wool for the dashboard, seats and door panels sourced from Australian Merino sheep, claimed to be “imported to Europe once a year and by ship … [to] reduce the carbon footprint”.

Other “sustainable” materials used inside include recycled plastic and nylon for the seat stitching, “sustainably-tanned” leather, recycled fibres that are fed into a 3D printer to create the foam of the seat, and “regenerated” carbon-fibre elsewhere on the door panels and centre console.

Few technical details of the concept have been announced, beyond confirmation it is powered by dual electric motors (one on each axle, for all-wheel drive) producing “over one megawatt”, or more than 1000kW.

There is said to be a “new-generation high-performance battery, which also ensures a long [driving] range,” but figures of the battery capacity and driving range are not quoted.

The Italian supercar specialist does not say what platform the Lanzador rides on, however the production version is expected to use the SSP Sport electric-car architecture being developed by VW Group sister brand Porsche.

Interestingly, its proportions are remarkably close to the Audi Activesphere high-riding electric sedan concept unveiled earlier this year – which is expected to share the SSP platform.

Lamborghini highlights a more advanced torque-vectoring system than existing models, rear-wheel steering, and adaptive air suspension.

There is an active aerodynamics package, including an adjustable front splitter, front air intakes that can open or close to maximise battery and engine cooling or reduce drag, aero panels in the wheels, air blades that extend out of the rear diffuser to increase downforce, and a “flow-through” rear spoiler.

The Lamborghini Lanzador makes its public debut this weekend during Monterey Car Week in California – and the prestigious Pebble Beach car show – ahead of the showroom version’s launch in 2028.
