BMW Australia has confirmed local pricing for the X1 M35i xDrive – the first version of its small SUV to wear the ‘M’ badge – ahead of showroom arrivals starting in the fourth quarter of 2023 (October to December).
Priced from $90,900 plus on-road costs, the X1 M35i is $6900 less expensive than the Mercedes-Benz GLA35 AMG and $3669 cheaper than the Audi RS Q3 – though the BMW produces less power and torque than the Audi.
The new performance small SUV is $20,500 more expensive than the X1’s existing flagship grade (the xDrive20i) – and $12,100 dearer than the previous-generation X2 M35i, which is expected to be replaced by an updated version using the same engine as the X1 M35i.

The BMW X1 M35i is powered by a tuned version of BMW’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder ‘B48’ petrol engine, developing 233kW and 400Nm in Australia – while European examples drop 12kW due to stricter emissions regulations.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which BMW claims can help its performance-focused small SUV accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 5.4 seconds – while it returns a claimed combined fuel consumption of 8.0-8.5L/100km on the European WLTP test cycle.
Standard equipment in BMW’s new flagship X1 includes 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, high-gloss ‘Shadowline’ exterior trim highlights, a panoramic glass sunroof and a contactless automatic tailgate.

Inside, the X1 M35i features a 10.7-inch digital dash and 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen – both running BMW’s latest ‘iDrive 9’ operating software – which includes wireless and wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, DAB digital radio, a Harmon Kardon 12-speaker sound system and a head-up display.
While the small SUV’s new variant is yet to receive a safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), the X1’s existing grades were awarded five stars late last year – highlighted by its 94 per cent result for its safety assist technology.
As previously reported, BMW’s M ‘Compound’ brakes – which include 385mm discs and four-piston calipers at the front, and 330mm discs with single-piston calipers at the rear – will be available as an option in 2024, for an additional $3000 on top of the no-cost M Sport Pro package.
The 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive is due in Australian showrooms between October and December 2023.
