Why Your Sunglasses Could Be Illegal Behind the Wheel During Britain’s Fourth Heatwave
Britain is entering its fourth heatwave of the summer, and as drivers reach for sunglasses before getting in the car, the RAC is warning that many popular styles of eyewear are actually illegal for use at the wheel and could result in penalty points, a fine, and in serious cases a charge of careless or dangerous driving.
The legal issue centres on lens category ratings, a standardised European classification system that runs from Category 0 to Category 4 based on how much light the lens transmits. Category 4 sunglasses, which are among the darkest available and are designed for use in high-altitude environments such as mountain skiing or glacier trekking, are not legal for driving in the UK. Many drivers are unaware of this distinction and own a pair of Category 4 sunglasses without knowing it.
What the Law Actually Says
The legal basis for the prohibition on overly dark sunglasses while driving sits in Section 96 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which makes it an offence to drive with eyesight that falls below the required standard. The Highway Code, in Rule 94, reinforces this by advising drivers not to wear tinted glasses in low light conditions. Where sunglasses are so dark that they reduce a driver’s ability to see and react in time, they can render the driver in breach of the eyesight standard even in bright sunshine.
Harriet Hernando, a policy officer at the RAC, explained the concern plainly. “Sunglasses are an essential item for many drivers during sunny spells, but not all sunglasses are safe to use behind the wheel,” she said. “It might sound extreme, but if your sunglasses are too dark, you could be breaking the law without even realising it. Dark Category 4 lenses restrict so much light from reaching your eyes that they can impair your ability to judge speed and distance correctly, particularly in variable light conditions.”
The penalty for driving with eyesight below the required standard under Section 96 is three penalty points and a fine. In cases where the impaired vision contributed to an accident, police may also pursue charges of driving without due care and attention, which carries a maximum fine of £2,500 and between three and nine penalty points. At the more serious end, where poor visibility contributed to a collision causing injury, a charge of dangerous driving becomes possible.
How the Category System Works
Sunglass lenses sold in the UK and European Union must comply with EN ISO 12312-1, an international standard that defines five lens categories based on their light transmission percentage. Understanding which category your sunglasses belong to is straightforward once you know what to look for, and the category number should appear on the lens, the frame temple, or the product packaging.
Category 0 lenses have a very light tint and transmit between 80 and 100 percent of available light. They offer minimal UV and glare protection and are suitable for all conditions, including driving, but provide little benefit in bright sunshine.
Category 1 lenses transmit between 43 and 80 percent of light. These are lightly tinted lenses appropriate for overcast or mildly sunny conditions. They are legal for driving and can be used comfortably in the kind of hazy summer sunshine common in the UK, though they do not provide strong protection against direct sun.
Category 2 lenses, transmitting 18 to 43 percent of light, offer a medium level of protection. They are entirely legal for driving and suitable for most daytime conditions. Many standard fashion sunglasses fall into this category.
Category 3 lenses transmit between 8 and 18 percent of light and are the most effective for driving in bright conditions. The RAC recommends Category 3 as the best choice for daytime driving in summer, offering strong sun protection without darkening the view to a dangerous degree. Polarised lenses within this category can also reduce glare from road surfaces, which is particularly useful on motorways or wet roads in sunshine.
Category 4 lenses transmit less than 8 percent of available light, typically between 3 and 8 percent. These lenses are designed for extreme environments where sunlight is unusually intense and reflected off snow or ice at high altitude. They are widely sold as performance eyewear for skiing, mountaineering and glacier walking. In the UK, driving with Category 4 lenses is illegal under all conditions, including full summer sunshine, because the level of light reduction they impose on the driver is too great to allow safe reaction times and spatial judgement.
How to Check Your Own Sunglasses
The category rating for your sunglasses should be printed on a sticker on the lens, stamped inside one of the frame temples, or listed on the packaging or accompanying leaflet. If the sunglasses arrived in a case with no labelling, or if they are a cheap fashion pair without any certification markings, the safest assumption is to treat them as unsuitable for driving in bright sunshine until the category can be confirmed.
Some sunglasses also carry specific “NOT SUITABLE FOR DRIVING” labelling, particularly those in the Category 4 range or certain specialist wraparound designs with very dark lenses. Where this label appears, the advice is unambiguous.
Polarised sunglasses can occasionally cause issues with reading some types of digital instrument display, as the polarisation filter can make certain LCD screens appear dark or blank depending on the angle of view. This is more likely to affect sat-nav screens mounted at certain angles than it is a built-in instrument cluster, but it is worth checking before a long journey.
The Fourth Heatwave of Summer 2026
The Met Office confirmed that the UK is entering its fourth period of above-average heat this summer. High pressure dominating from the south and south-east is expected to push temperatures in England into the low 30s Celsius for several days. Forecasters have issued heat health alerts for much of England, with the strongest warnings covering London and the south-east.
Heatwaves create conditions that make the choice of sunglasses more consequential for drivers. Low sun angles in the morning and evening, a common feature of late summer heat, create direct glare that can temporarily blind a driver. At the same time, sun exposure at the height of the day can cause eye fatigue, headaches and reduced concentration during long journeys. The right sunglasses mitigate these effects without introducing the additional risk of reduced light transmission.
The RAC has also highlighted that heatwaves increase the total volume of traffic on rural and leisure roads as people travel to beaches, country parks and outdoor venues. Higher traffic volumes, combined with drivers who may be fatigued from the heat, make accurate hazard perception more important than usual. Anything that degrades a driver’s ability to see and react quickly has a proportionally larger impact on risk during these periods.
Other Summer Driving Eye Safety Issues
Sunglasses are not the only factor affecting vision during a heatwave. Drivers should also consider the state of their windscreen. Sunscreen applied to hands and transferred to the steering wheel, gear knob and windscreen interior surface is a common summer occurrence. On the inside of the glass, a greasy film can dramatically worsen glare from low sun, turning a manageable dazzle into a blinding smear. Carrying a dry microfibre cloth in the car and wiping the inside of the windscreen before a journey in bright sunshine is a simple measure that reduces this risk.
Contact lens wearers may experience increased discomfort in hot and dry conditions, which can lead to rubbing the eyes or reduced blink rate. Both can temporarily affect visual clarity. Contact lens wearers should consider carrying rewetting drops during a heatwave and switching to glasses for longer journeys if dryness becomes a distraction.
The sun visor is an underused tool. Many drivers, particularly those who have good sunglasses, overlook the visor when low sun strikes at a direct angle. Using both a quality pair of Category 3 sunglasses and the sun visor when facing directly into the sun provides the most effective combination of glare reduction without compromising overall vision. The visor blocks the most intense glare while the sunglasses handle ambient brightness and contrast.
Where To Find the Right Sunglasses for Driving
Category 3 polarised sunglasses are available from a wide range of retailers from budget supermarket ranges through to premium optical brands. The category rating does not correlate directly with price. A pair of Category 3 sunglasses from a supermarket for under £10 can offer equivalent protection during driving to a designer pair ten times the cost, provided both meet the EN ISO 12312-1 standard and display the CE or UKCA marking.
Opticians can advise on prescription sunglasses for those who normally wear glasses. Prescription Category 3 lenses are available in most frame styles and provide the same protection as non-prescription equivalents. Transition or photochromic lenses that darken automatically in sunlight are a practical option, though drivers should be aware that some transition lenses do not darken as effectively behind a car windscreen because the glass filters some of the UV light that triggers the photochromic reaction.
With temperatures set to remain elevated through much of August, keeping a suitable pair of sunglasses permanently in the car is a practical step that costs little and removes the risk of driving in unsuitable eyewear. The RAC’s advice is simple: check the category, choose Category 3 for bright conditions, and never drive in Category 4 lenses regardless of how much the sun is shining.
