Here’s yet another prime example of why you still need to pay attention while using Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) Beta system.

A driver known simply as Ryan shared dashcam footage with YouTube channel Wham Baam Teslacam of their Model 3 veering off into floodwaters while using the FSD Beta, causing the vehicle to likely be written off.

The driver claims they were travelling on a highway outside of Mono City, California at around 60mph (~97km/h) with the car’s FSD Beta activated.

As the incident unfolded the driver drove past a bright orange ‘flooded’ sign, though they claimed similar signs are present in the area usually without any water present.

The driver also claims the Model 3’s FSD Beta system didn’t slow down appropriately when crossing the stream of water, resulting in the car swerving off to the left and into a larger body of water in the table drain.

Ryan told Wham Baam Teslacam they are planning to sue the city and Tesla “if possible”, though it’s common knowledge that all Tesla drivers are still responsible for driving while using Autopilot of FSD.

The submerged Model 3 had to be towed out of the flooded table drain. At this stage the driver hasn’t heard back about repairs, but suspects the car will be written off.

Tesla’s FSD, along with the less sophisticated Autopilot system, are both still technically Level 2 autonomous driving technologies that still “require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous”, according to Tesla.
