  • Mercedes-Benz drove two CLA models into each other at 56km/h in a side-impact test no law or safety rating requires, and every reading from all eight crash dummies stayed within safe limits.
  • The electric CLA’s underfloor battery took a direct hit from the other car and came away undamaged, answering one of the biggest safety worries buyers raise about EVs.
  • A new system called Mercedes-Benz Rescue Intelligence will send emergency crews live data on battery temperature, seatbelt status and open doors before they reach the crash site, starting in 2027.

Two Cars, 56km/h, Zero Serious Injuries

Mercedes-Benz drove two of its new CLA models into each other at a Stuttgart test track this week, recreating one of the deadliest collisions ordinary drivers face. A CLA Shooting Brake with a petrol-electric engine struck the driver’s side of an all-electric CLA, both cars travelling at 56km/h with no braking. Eight crash dummies, standing in for four adults and four children, rode in the two vehicles. Mercedes says every reading from every dummy, measured at up to 150 points per dummy, stayed below the thresholds engineers use to flag a serious or life-threatening injury.

A Harder Test Than the Law Demands

No regulator or safety-rating body, Euro NCAP included, requires a test like this one. Standard side-impact tests fire a stationary car, or a purpose-built barrier shaped like a car, into a target vehicle under tightly controlled conditions. Mercedes instead crashed two real production cars together and built the scenario from its own accident research: more than 6,000 real crashes, studied by engineering teams in Germany, China and India from 1969 onward.

The company picked a brutal combination on purpose. Junction crashes at 56km/h sit near the top end of speeds recorded in real side-impact collisions, well above what drivers typically meet in city traffic. A car’s flank has far less crumple space than its front end, which makes a direct side hit one of the hardest crash types for a passenger compartment to survive. Mercedes puts the share of injury crashes that are side impacts at roughly a quarter.

Euro NCAP’s own side-impact protocol uses a moving deformable barrier, a block built to a specified mass and shape, fired into a stationary target car at a fixed speed. That test is repeatable and lets every manufacturer be compared on equal terms, which is why ratings bodies rely on it. Mercedes argues a barrier test can’t fully capture what happens when two real cars, each with their own crumple structures, mass and shape, hit each other on a real road. Its own test adds that variable back in, at a speed above what the barrier protocol specifies.

Why the Battery Mattered Most

For the electric CLA, the test carried extra stakes. Its high-voltage battery sits in the floor, directly in the path of the other car’s bumper. A side hit at speed is exactly the scenario EV engineers worry about most: battery damage can mean fire risk, and fire risk is the question buyers ask most often about going electric. Mercedes says the battery stayed intact and undamaged after the impact, with both passenger compartments remaining structurally whole.

“Mercedes-Benz’s ambition is to build the safest vehicles in the world. That is why we develop safety systems that address real-world traffic scenarios. The world’s first public intersection crash test conducted in this configuration is a powerful demonstration of that ambition,” said Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer, Development & Purchasing.

Help on the Way Before It Arrives

Mercedes also used the test to introduce Mercedes-Benz Rescue Intelligence, a system that will roll out gradually from 2027. It links a crashed car directly to emergency services, sending them live information while they are still travelling to the scene: how many people are on board, whether airbags and seatbelts deployed, which doors are open, the battery’s temperature and the condition of the high-voltage system. Fire crews can pick the right rescue equipment before they arrive instead of working it out on-site, cutting the time between arrival and treatment in a crash where every second affects the outcome.

“If you want to build the safest vehicles, you need to incorporate insights from real-world accidents into your vehicle development requirements. We call this Real-Life Safety. This test involving two CLA models demonstrates how we successfully translate that approach into reality,” said Paul Dick, Director of Vehicle Safety, Mercedes-Benz AG.

What It Means for CLA Buyers

The CLA Shooting Brake reached UK order books priced from £47,750, putting it up against rivals priced about the same, such as the BMW 3 Series Touring and Audi A5 Avant. Mercedes put the new CLA through around 150 physical crash tests and 15,000 virtual simulations before it reached showrooms, well beyond what regulation calls for. For a buyer cross-shopping an electric or hybrid CLA against rivals at a comparable price, this test gives a specific answer to a question that normally only comes from independent ratings bodies months after a car goes on sale.

Rescue Intelligence won’t appear on cars already on the road. Mercedes has not confirmed which model year will carry it first or whether it will reach the UK alongside the rest of Europe, but the company’s own timeline points to the system reaching production cars from 2027.

The wider push behind all of this sits inside what Mercedes calls its 140th-anniversary year, marking the span from Carl Benz’s original patent to the current CLA lineup. Marketing aside, the number a buyer should care about sits in the test itself: two cars, both over two tonnes, hitting each other at 56km/h, and eight dummies that came through it within safe limits. For anyone shopping a new CLA, or comparing it against an electric rival for the first time, that’s the kind of detail a spec sheet can’t show.
