Mercedes-Benz G300 recalled: Rear driveshafts could seize

Mercedes-Benz’s G300 4×4 has been recalled in Australia, after it was discovered the G-Wagen’s rear driveshafts could overheat and seize.

Mercedes-Benz has recalled 117 examples of its G300 4×4, citing a manufacturing fault with its rear axle driveshafts.

The G300 was sold by Mercedes-Benz in Australia between late-2015 and early-2018, with all examples powered by a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the oil supply to the rear axle drive shaft bearing may not meet specification.

“As a result, the bearing may overheat and seize causing a loss of motive power whilst driving and/or an oil leak from the rear axle.

“A loss of motive power and/or an oil leak onto the road could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”
