How rich must you be to dump a $1 million Mercedes-Maybach?

A Mercedes’ version of the Rolls-Royce of limousines – the Maybach – has been found abandoned in the UK. Who’s rich enough to ditch a $1 million car?

There are dumped cars – and there are dumped cars.

And then there’s this: a million-dollar Maybach built by Mercedes-Benz from 2002 to 2013.

At first glance, the super-long limousine looks like it’s had its suspension lowered intentionally.

On closer inspection, however, it becomes apparent the vehicle has been abandoned near a block of flats.

The Instagram page, Mildly Interesting Cars of London is also curious about how such a car – of which only a handful were sold in Australia due to the almost $1 million price tag – came to be dumped.

The tongue-in-cheek post says: “Whilst a sports car under layers of dust in an underground car park is a sad but interesting, a hyper luxurious, unobtainable dictator vessel covered in moss is ominous.”

The commenter then imagined what it would be like to be so rich to own – and then discard – such a car.

“Ownership of a Maybach comes with ownership of a team. You’d have a driver, you’d have your groundskeeper, you’d have your valet and a mechanic who looks after your car collection. If you have a Maybach, you’ve got other cars,” the Instagram post continues.

‘Naturally, you’ll also have someone (or a group) looking after your finances. A Maybach doesn’t become abandoned. If you find yourself in a state of financial turmoil the assets go first.

“You pull the plug on things one by one, and expensive cars are the easiest things to cash-out of first before you’re forced to look at your team, your holiday homes, helicopter or even yacht.

“So of all the things an oligarch would to cling onto, a Maybach should near the bottom of the list.

“And yet, for some reason, here we are.”

The Instagram post notes records showed the vehicle last changed hands in 2011, “with no MOT (registration paperwork) for
nearly a decade now, this car has (somehow) survived”.
