  • The MGS9 PHEV Comfort starts at £34,210 on the road, £5,790 below the £40,000 mark that triggers an extra road tax charge.
  • Buyers get seven full-size seats, 332 litres of boot space with the third row up, and up to 62 miles of electric-only range.
  • MG backs the car with a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty, as new research shows median car prices have risen 58% in a decade while pay grew just 2%.

A Seven-Seat SUV That Stays Under £40,000

MG has priced its seven-seat SUV, the MGS9 PHEV, below the line that adds an extra tax bill to pricier cars in Britain. The entry Comfort trim costs £34,210 on the road, or £369 a month on a PCP deal with a £2,581 deposit and a £250 manufacturer contribution. That figure sits £5,790 under the £40,000 threshold that triggers the Vehicle Excise Duty Expensive Car Supplement, a charge drivers pay for five years from their second year of ownership.

The Price and What It Buys

For £34,210, buyers get seven seats, a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a specification list that includes heated front seats, a panoramic roof, tri-zone climate control and a 360-degree reversing camera. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen sits next to physical buttons for air conditioning, a layout that keeps basic controls within reach rather than burying them in a touchscreen menu. MG backs the car with a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty, among the longest cover periods on sale from any manufacturer in Britain.

Avoiding the Expensive Car Supplement

The Expensive Car Supplement adds £440 a year to the standard road tax bill for any car listed above £40,000 when new. The rule catches buyers even when they negotiate a lower price at the dealership: the supplement is calculated from the list price, not the amount the customer actually pays. Over five years that adds up to £2,200, money the MGS9 PHEV buyer keeps simply by choosing a car priced under the line. Marketplace data from Autotrader shows how rare that positioning is among seven-seat rivals: 54% of new SUV stock on sale in Britain carries a price tag of £40,000 or more, while 92% of MG’s SUV range stays below it.

Space and Hybrid Range for Family Trips

Luggage space runs to 332 litres with all seven seats in use, rising to 1,026 litres once the third row folds flat, room for a family holiday load or a buggy and a set of golf clubs together. The plug-in hybrid system adds up to 62 miles of electric-only range on the WLTP cycle when fully charged, enough for most school runs and commutes to pass without the petrol engine switching on. Longer trips fall back on the combustion engine, so a motorway run to visit relatives or reach a holiday cottage doesn’t bring the range anxiety that puts some families off a fully electric car. Seven full-sized seats, with room for adults in the third row, give the MGS9 flexibility that smaller five-seat SUVs can’t match.

A Widening Gap Between Pay and Car Prices

MG’s pricing push lands alongside research it commissioned from Opinion Matters, which surveyed 2,000 UK drivers between 2 and 6 October. The median price of a new car has risen 58% over ten years, the survey found, while household disposable income, tracked by the Office for National Statistics, grew by just 2% over the same period. Six in ten drivers (62%) told the survey new cars feel less affordable than a decade ago, and a third (34%) called the gap stark. Nearly half (46%) said they want a new car but hold off over living costs or sticker prices.

The pattern splits along age and gender lines. Seven in ten drivers aged 55 and over (72%) said affordability has worsened, the highest share of any age group, compared with 56% of men and 69% of women overall. Asked what they would change to fit a budget, 88% of respondents said they would rethink at least one aspect of their next car, and 41% said they would switch manufacturer entirely to find better value. Buyers wanting extra space gave practical reasons rather than status ones: 31% wanted more boot or storage room, 30% cited family holidays or longer journeys, and 24% needed room for extended family or friends.

MG’s own sales figures suggest the strategy is working. UK registrations climbed 23.7% in September against a market that grew 12% overall, pushing MG to fourth place among UK car brands with 18,026 registrations and its sixth consecutive month of record sales for the calendar month. Ian Plummer, Chief Customer Officer at Autotrader, said car buyers “want space and efficiency without premium markup,” and that with the MGS9 “rapidly surging to become one of the most popular plug-in hybrids on Autotrader,” the brand has “delivered on that.” David Allison, Director of Product and Planning at MG Motor UK, called the affordability figures “a wake-up call for the family-car market,” adding that the MGS9 delivers “seven seats and plug-in hybrid driving from £34,210.”

For families cross-shopping seven-seat SUVs this winter, the MGS9 PHEV Comfort gives a concrete number to measure rivals against: £34,210 on the road, a road tax bill that stays flat past the £40,000 line, and a warranty that outlasts most ownership periods.
