  • Mercedes-Benz has revealed the first all-electric version of the GLC, its best-selling model worldwide, with the range-topping GLC 400 4MATIC Electric producing 483 horsepower and up to 350 miles of EPA-estimated range.
  • The electric GLC runs on a new 800-volt platform and offers more interior space than the gas-powered version, including a 3.3-inch longer wheelbase and up to 61.4 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats folded.
  • Buyers can option a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen with a voice assistant built on technology from Google, Microsoft and ChatGPT, though Mercedes has not yet confirmed US pricing or an on-sale date.

Mercedes’ Top Seller Goes Electric for the First Time

Mercedes-Benz sells more GLCs than any other model in its lineup, and the SUV has topped the company’s global sales charts for years. The automaker has now revealed a fully electric version, built as its own model rather than a battery-swapped copy of the existing SUV. The reveal covers technical specs, cabin technology and manufacturing plans, but Mercedes has not released a starting price or confirmed exactly when the car reaches US dealers.

483 Horsepower, 350 Miles of Range and an Adjustable Ride

The range-topping trim at launch is the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric, producing 483 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 350 miles on a full charge. The electric GLC runs on a new 800-volt architecture, a jump from the 400-volt systems in most current Mercedes EVs that speeds up DC fast charging. A four-level regenerative braking system lets drivers pick how much the car slows itself when they lift off the accelerator, including a one-pedal setting that handles more than 99 percent of everyday braking through regeneration alone rather than the physical brake pads. A Terrain drive mode adjusts the steering, brakes and front axle for dirt and gravel roads, a feature not common on electric luxury SUVs in this segment.

The GLC carries up to ten external cameras, five radar sensors and twelve ultrasonic sensors for its driver assistance and parking systems. An optional air suspension borrowed from the S-Class flagship sedan pairs with rear-axle steering that turns up to 4.5 degrees, tightening the SUV’s turning circle at low speed and steadying it at highway speed. An optional headlight system called DIGITAL LIGHT adds Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, a feature new to the GLC in the US that dims light around other road users without cutting the high beams entirely. A standard heat pump pulls waste heat from the battery, drive motor and outside air to warm the cabin, a detail that counts most for buyers in cold climates, where heating an EV’s cabin can otherwise cut into winter driving range.

More Cabin Room Than the Gas-Powered GLC

Mercedes stretched the wheelbase 3.3 inches longer than the combustion GLC to build the electric version, and the extra length shows up inside the cabin. Front passengers get half an inch more legroom and nearly two inches more headroom, while rear passengers gain almost two inches of legroom. The trunk holds 20.1 cubic feet with the rear seats up, expanding to 61.4 cubic feet with them folded down, and a separate front trunk under the hood adds another 4.5 cubic feet of storage. The GLC also keeps a hitch option, with trailer-stabilization software and the ability to steer the vehicle automatically at low speed while reversing with a trailer attached.

The electric GLC unlocks and locks on its own as the driver walks up with the key, and the tailgate opens with a kicking motion under the rear bumper for anyone carrying groceries or bags. All available seats carry certification from the German back-health group AGR, and an optional massage function uses pulsating air chambers built into the seat cushion and backrest. The center console includes wireless phone charging for both front seats, and the trunk floor lowers 3.1 inches to swallow taller cargo. Rear seatbacks fold in a 40:20:40 split, useful for carrying long items like skis alongside two rear passengers. Standard upholstery colors run to black, beige and brown, with a Tartufo Brown leather option finished in a diamond-stitch pattern for buyers who want a step up from the base cloth and MB-Tex trim.

A 39-Inch Screen and a Voice Assistant Built on ChatGPT

The optional MBUX Hyperscreen spans 39.1 inches, the largest single display Mercedes has fitted to any of its cars, and pairs with ambient lighting synced to nearly a dozen preset visual themes. The fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system runs voice AI drawn from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google, letting the assistant answer open-ended questions and hold a multi-part conversation instead of responding only to fixed commands. Route guidance runs on Google Maps data through a partnership with Google Cloud, and drivers can add an augmented-reality head-up display that overlays directions onto the road ahead. An optional glass roof called SKY CONTROL switches between clear and frosted across nine separate zones, and at night it can light up 162 small points built into the glass to look like stars.

Built in Germany, Alongside Its Gas-Powered Sibling

Mercedes will build the electric GLC on the same assembly line as the combustion GLC at its Bremen plant in Germany, with additional production in Hungary and China. The company says the electric GLC’s full lifecycle carbon footprint runs about two-thirds lower than the current gas model’s, a figure it attributes to a mostly renewable-powered Bremen plant and a battery pack built with roughly 30 percent fewer emissions per cell than earlier production methods. The launch puts Mercedes against a growing field of electric midsize luxury SUVs, including the BMW iX3, Audi Q6 e-tron and Genesis Electrified GV70, in a segment where buyers increasingly cross-shop electric and gas versions of the same nameplate before choosing.

What Mercedes Executives Are Saying

Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Källenius called the electric GLC central to the company’s plans: “The biggest product launch program in our company’s history continues with the all-new GLC.”

Mathias Geisen, the board member responsible for sales, said the vehicle was shaped directly by owner feedback: “The all-new electric GLC is the result of an intensive dialogue with our customers, a vehicle that impresses across the board with everyday practicality, high range and powerful driving dynamics. The entire driving experience embodies what makes a Mercedes-Benz: comfort, safety and the feeling of having arrived, Welcome Home.”

Mercedes has not confirmed US pricing for the electric GLC. The current gas-powered GLC 300 starts at $49,550 before options, which gives an early sense of where the electric version is likely to land once Mercedes releases official figures closer to launch.
