Chrysler is recalling certain 2022 to 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2023 Jeep Wagoneer, 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Jeep Wagoneer L models after Stellantis found a software error that can wipe the gear indicator off the dashboard, leaving drivers unable to confirm whether the transmission is actually in Park. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a missing gear display raises the risk of unintended rollaway. Notification letters started mailing August 21, and the fix is a free software update at any dealer.

What Goes Wrong on the Dashboard

The defect sits in the shifter module, the computer that reads the driver’s gear selection and reports it back to the instrument cluster as the familiar PRND display. NHTSA’s recall filing explains that a software error can cause that display to blank out entirely, so the driver has no way to see whether the vehicle registered Park, Reverse, Neutral or Drive. The vehicles fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 102, the federal rule governing transmission shift sequence and starter interlock displays, and that display is supposed to be a constant, reliable reference point for the driver.

A driver who parks on a slope and glances at a blank screen has no confirmation the transmission actually caught in Park rather than settling into Neutral. Stellantis has not published a public root-cause breakdown of what triggers the blanking, but the fix is a software update to the shifter module rather than a physical part replacement, which points to a firmware bug in how the module communicates gear state to the cluster rather than a mechanical fault in the shifter itself.

The Rollaway Risk in Plain Terms

Unintended rollaway happens when a vehicle everyone believes is parked starts moving on its own, usually the result of a transmission that never fully engaged Park or a driver who misjudged the gear and stepped out without a functioning parking brake backup. It is a small but recurring category of vehicle defect, and Jeep specifically has a documented history with it. Stellantis previously recalled more than 61,000 model-year 2019 to 2023 Jeep Cherokees after finding that a failing power transfer unit could cause a loss of drive power or a rollaway even when the driver believed the vehicle was secured. Years earlier, a separate campaign covering more than 206,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs addressed a hydraulic control unit fault that could let a vehicle shift out of Park without the brake pedal being pressed.

None of those earlier campaigns share a root cause with this shifter-module software recall, but together they show a pattern: Jeep’s larger SUVs have needed more than one safety fix tied to whether the vehicle is actually secured in Park. A blank gear display does not cause a rollaway by itself, but it removes the one dashboard cue a driver has to catch a transmission that has not fully engaged, which is exactly the scenario NHTSA is trying to close off with this recall.

Which Vehicles Are Covered and What Happens Next

The recall applies to specific production runs of the 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2023 Jeep Wagoneer, 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Jeep Wagoneer L, not every vehicle from those model years. Stellantis made affected VINs searchable on NHTSA’s website starting July 9, 2026, roughly six weeks before letters went out, giving owners an early window to check their specific vehicle before the paperwork arrived.

Dealers will update the shifter module software free of charge, and Stellantis says the fix does not require replacing any hardware. Owners can schedule the appointment as soon as they confirm their VIN is included, without waiting for the mailed notice. Anyone with questions can contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 and reference recall number 30D, the internal code Stellantis assigned this campaign.

Until the update is installed, NHTSA’s practical advice for any vehicle with an intermittent gear-display fault is the same one it gives for every rollaway-adjacent defect: always fully engage the parking brake, confirm the vehicle is stationary before opening the door, and if the gear indicator ever goes dark, treat the vehicle as though it might not be in Park until a technician confirms otherwise.

A Bigger Recall Environment for Software-Dependent Safety Displays

This recall lands in a year where NHTSA has already logged more individual recall campaigns than in any of the past five, with vehicle software increasingly the root cause rather than a mechanical part. Instrument clusters, backup cameras and now shifter displays are all controlled by code that can fail in ways a purely mechanical gauge never could, and a bug that only appears intermittently, under specific conditions, is far harder to catch in pre-production testing than a part that simply wears out.

Toyota, Honda and Stellantis have all issued display-related recalls in 2026 tied to software rather than hardware, and in each case the fix has been a firmware update rather than a physical repair. That is a meaningful shift in how automakers handle safety recalls: a decade ago, a defect this widespread would have meant ordering replacement parts for every dealer in the country. Today it more often means pushing a corrected build to the shifter module or instrument cluster computer, which is faster and cheaper, but only if owners actually bring the vehicle in rather than assuming a working dashboard means nothing is wrong.

What Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer Owners Should Do

Enter the VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls to confirm whether a specific Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L, Wagoneer or Wagoneer L is included in campaign 30D. Do not wait for the mailed letter if the gear display has already gone blank even once. An intermittent fault by definition will not show up every time. Call Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 to schedule the software update, which dealers can complete without ordering parts in advance.

Owners parking on an incline should treat a blank gear indicator as a reason to keep a foot on the brake and confirm the vehicle has stopped moving before stepping out, regardless of whether the recall has been completed yet. Anyone who bought one of these SUVs used should check the VIN independently. A private seller often does not know the vehicle has an open safety campaign at all.

Reading a Recall Report: What FMVSS 102 Actually Requires

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 102 dates back decades and was written for a simpler era of mechanical shift indicators, but its core requirement has not changed: a driver has to be able to look at the dashboard and know, without doubt, which gear the transmission has selected. NHTSA treats a failure of that display as a safety defect in its own right, independent of whether the transmission itself is working correctly. The entire point of the standard is removing guesswork from a moment where guessing wrong can mean a vehicle rolling into traffic, a garage door or a person standing behind it.

That is also why this recall counts as a full safety campaign rather than a customer satisfaction notice. Stellantis could have treated an intermittent display glitch as a minor annoyance fixable at the owner’s convenience. Instead, the company reported it to NHTSA as a noncompliance with a federal safety standard, which triggers the same notification and free-repair obligations as a recall involving a failed brake line or a fuel leak.

Owners can also ask a dealer to run a full VIN check for every open Stellantis campaign in one visit rather than scheduling separate appointments as each new recall notice arrives in the mail. Jeep, Ram and Chrysler have all issued multiple safety campaigns in 2026, and a single service visit that clears every outstanding recall on a given vehicle is faster for the owner and easier for the dealership to schedule than repeat trips spread across several months.
