Ford is telling more than half a million Bronco owners to watch for a recall notice this August after finding a wiring defect that can spark a fire under the hood. The automaker says the fix is free, but owners who want to check their vehicle now, rather than wait for a letter, can do it in under a minute at NHTSA.gov.

What Ford Found in the Engine Bay

The recall covers 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs from the 2021 through 2026 model years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford traced the problem to the wiring harness that runs through the engine compartment. If that harness gets damaged, the wires inside can lose their protective covering and touch each other, creating a short circuit. The Bronco, built at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant, has been one of the automaker’s strongest sellers among off-road SUVs after its return to the lineup in 2021, competing directly with the Jeep Wrangler for buyers who want a rugged, truck-based off-roader with removable doors and a roof.

That popularity is part of why the recalled population runs so high. Five model years of a high-volume nameplate, spanning both the standard Bronco and the higher-performance Raptor trim, adds up quickly even when the defect rate itself sits at roughly 1 in 100 vehicles.

A short circuit in that location can generate enough heat to melt nearby plastic and ignite a fire. Ford’s recall filing describes drivers noticing smoke coming from the vents or a warning light on the dashboard before flames appear on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Ford’s own investigation found 15 fire events tied to the wiring between October 15, 2024, and June 20, 2026.

The automaker says it has no reports of crashes or injuries connected to the defect, and it estimates that only about 1% of the recalled Broncos actually carry the faulty harness. NHTSA still requires every one of the 565,691 vehicles to be recalled and inspected: there is no way to test which individual trucks have the flaw without pulling them into a shop.

That gap between the small number of actual fire events and the large recalled population is normal for this type of manufacturing defect. Wiring harnesses get installed the same way on every unit rolling down an assembly line, so a batch of harnesses with a manufacturing flaw could turn up in any vehicle built in the affected window, not just the ones that have already shown a problem. Inspecting the whole population is the only reliable way to find every affected truck before a short circuit actually happens on the road.

How Ford Plans to Fix It

Ford dealers will install a protective sheath over the wiring harness at no charge to the owner. The job does not require replacing the harness itself, just covering it so a rub-through cannot expose bare wire. NHTSA says owner notification letters go out starting August 24, 2026, and owners can reach Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 26S55.

Bronco owners do not have to wait for the mailer. Vehicle identification numbers tied to this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 23, 2026. Typing a 17-digit VIN, found on the driver’s side dashboard or door jamb sticker, into the NHTSA recall lookup tool will show whether that specific truck needs the fix. Owners who get a positive match should call their local Ford dealer to book the repair rather than waiting for the letter to arrive by mail. Dealers can typically schedule the sheathing job the same week a customer calls.

How This Recall Fits Ford’s Rough Year for Quality

This is not an isolated headache for Ford. The company has issued more than 37 separate recall campaigns in 2026 covering roughly 10.3 million vehicles, a pace that puts it on track to top its own recall record from the previous year. The largest single action so far, a trailer brake control defect affecting the F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, Maverick and E-Transit, alone covers about 4.4 million vehicles. Just three days before the Bronco recall became public, Ford also recalled 387,911 Explorers and Lincoln Aviators over a second-row seat switch that can stick and let the seat slide or tip in a crash.

Industry analysts point to the speed of Ford’s post-pandemic product launches and supplier turnover as factors behind the spike in recall volume, though Ford has not attributed this specific wiring issue to any single supplier change. Whatever the cause, the trend puts Ford at the top of the recall leaderboard for 2026, ahead of General Motors, Stellantis and every import brand sold in the US.

What Bronco Owners Should Do Now

Owners who smell burning plastic, see smoke from the vents, or notice a dashboard warning light should pull over and shut off the engine right away rather than drive to a dealer. Ford’s letter will arrive by mail starting August 24, but the VIN lookup at NHTSA.gov works today. Owners can also park their Bronco away from structures until the sheathing repair is complete if they want extra peace of mind, though Ford has not issued a park-outside advisory for this recall the way it has for some battery-related fire recalls on other models.

The repair itself takes a fraction of the time of a part replacement: technicians are sliding a sheath over existing wiring rather than rewiring the truck. Owners who bought their Bronco used should also check the VIN. Recall coverage follows the vehicle rather than the original buyer.

How This Recall Stacks Up Against Other Fire-Risk Campaigns

Engine-bay fires tied to wiring defects are not new territory for the industry, but the scale of this one puts it near the top of the list for 2026. By comparison, Jeep recalled 1.08 million Wranglers and Gladiators earlier this month over a separate electric power steering pump wiring issue that carries a park-outside warning, a step Ford has not asked Bronco owners to take. Chrysler told Pacifica plug-in hybrid owners to park outside entirely after finding a battery fire risk in June. The difference in Ford’s advisory suggests the company sees a lower immediate risk with the Bronco wiring than automakers have assigned to those other campaigns, though owners who notice any warning signs should treat the vehicle the same way regardless of what the official guidance says.

Insurance carriers generally do not raise premiums over an open recall on its own, and a completed recall repair has no bearing on a policy’s cost. Owners do not need to notify their insurer about this recall specifically, though anyone who experiences an actual fire event, however minor, should document it and report it to both Ford and NHTSA’s complaint database at nhtsa.gov. That consumer-reported data is what regulators use to decide whether a recall’s scope needs to expand.

What Happens if Ford Finds More Problems

Recalls covering wiring and electrical defects sometimes grow after the initial filing, as engineers dig deeper into warranty claims and find the same fault pattern in additional model years or trim levels. Ford’s filing currently caps the affected population at 565,691 vehicles built between the 2021 and 2026 model years, but owners of Broncos built just outside that window should still run their VIN through the NHTSA lookup tool periodically over the coming months in case the campaign expands. NHTSA updates its public recall database in near real time as automakers file amendments, so a VIN that returns clean today is worth checking again if Ford issues a follow-up notice.

For now, the fix stands as a straight wiring-sheath installation with no part shortage reported, meaning owners who book an appointment once their dealer confirms parts availability should not face the kind of multi-month wait some other 2026 recalls, including several tied to semiconductor and battery-cell shortages, have produced.
