VW Transporter eHybrid Arrives From £38,155 With 35-Mile Electric Range

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has opened UK order books for the Transporter eHybrid, the first plug-in hybrid version of a van that has run on diesel alone for seven generations. Prices start at £38,155 excluding VAT, and buyers ordering before 30 September 2026 can take a Contract Hire deal from £439 a month.

The new model pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery, giving drivers a way to cover short local runs on electric power while keeping the range and payload a diesel Transporter has always offered.

What the eHybrid Powertrain Actually Does

The petrol engine and electric motor work together through a CVT gearbox to produce 232PS combined, and the van can travel up to 35 miles on electric power alone before the petrol engine takes over. A 3.7kW AC charger brings the battery from empty to full in 4.5 hours, short enough to top up overnight or over a lunch break without disrupting a working day. Payload sits at 1,132kg and towing capacity reaches 2,300kg on the Panel Van, matching the figures buyers already expect from the Transporter range.

That combination pays off most for businesses running the van on fixed local routes, where a driver can leave the depot on electric power, run deliveries around town, and return to base without touching the petrol engine at all, only calling on it for longer trips out of the city. Volkswagen hasn’t published a combined fuel economy figure for the eHybrid in the UK release, so buyers comparing running costs against a standard diesel Transporter will want that number from a dealer before ordering.

Panel Van, Kombi or Shuttle

Volkswagen offers the eHybrid across the same three body styles as the rest of the Transporter line-up. The Panel Van covers pure cargo work, the Kombi adds rear seats for a mixed crew-and-cargo layout, and the Shuttle seats passengers, with the Shuttle variant emitting less than 95g/km of CO2 on the combined WLTP cycle. Prices climb from £38,155 for the entry-level T32 Panel Van Commerce Plus in short-wheelbase form up to £53,955 for a long-wheelbase Sportline Kombi, with wheelbase and trim choices letting buyers match the van to the job rather than settling for one fixed specification.

The Finance Numbers Behind the Launch

The £439-a-month Contract Hire offer runs on a 36-month agreement covering 10,000 miles a year, with a customer initial rental of £2,634 and no separate deposit beyond that. Business customers taking the deal need to order before 30 September 2026 to qualify, and the usual excess mileage and fair wear and tear charges apply once the contract ends, as with any Contract Hire agreement.

Contract Hire suits a business that wants a fixed monthly cost and hands the van back at the end of the term rather than buying it outright, and Volkswagen quotes the same £439 rate on both the Commerce Plus Panel Van and the Commerce Plus Kombi in short-wheelbase form. That flat pricing across body styles gives fleet buyers an easy way to budget, whichever configuration suits their work, without recalculating the monthly cost model by model.

Full pricing across the eHybrid range runs from £38,155 for the base Panel Van up past £53,955 for a long-wheelbase Sportline Kombi, with VAT and on-the-road costs adding roughly £9,000 to £10,600 on top of each excluding-VAT figure. Business buyers who reclaim VAT will find the excluding-VAT price the more relevant number when comparing running costs against a standard diesel Transporter.

Warranty and Servicing Included as Standard

Every Transporter, including the new eHybrid, comes with Volkswagen’s 5+ Promise at no extra cost: five services (three for electric models), three MOTs, a five-year warranty and five years of roadside assistance handled by the AA. That package matches what buyers already get across the wider Transporter range, so the eHybrid doesn’t ask owners to trade away any of the reassurance that comes with a diesel model.

A Family That Already Includes One Plug-In Model

The eHybrid joins a UK Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles line-up that already runs the all-electric ID. Buzz Cargo alongside diesel Transporters, Amarok pick-ups and Crafter vans. Volkswagen has sold the Transporter in Britain for more than 75 years, and the current model is the seventh generation of the van, which makes the eHybrid the first time a plug-in option has reached the range in its entire history. On the passenger side, the Caravelle brought its own update to UK buyers earlier this year, and the eHybrid gives fleet managers and private buyers who need a Transporter-based van or shuttle a lower-emission option without switching to a smaller vehicle or a fully electric model that needs longer charging stops on longer routes.

For a business running local delivery routes or short shuttle work, the 35-mile electric range covers a meaningful share of a typical day without any change to routine, while the petrol engine removes the range anxiety that comes with a fully electric van on longer jobs. That combination, rather than any single number in the specification sheet, is the real selling point of a plug-in hybrid Transporter over either extreme.
