Mazda is preparing to roll out a new subcompact crossover, expected to be named the CX-20, aimed at replacing the aging CX-3. This new model will debut with upgraded styling and enhanced interior space.

After over a decade of service as an entry-level model, the CX-3 is being phased out. Trademark applications and insider information indicate that the CX-20 is already in advanced stages of development. Positioned below the CX-30, this crossover aims to uphold Mazda’s reputation for stylish and engaging vehicles.

During a recent Mazda event in Thailand, executives shared hints regarding the CX-20, backed by preliminary design sketches. While the unveiling of the final design is still some time away, early insights depict a distinctive evolution of the Mazda design philosophy.

The CX-20 intends to embrace Mazda’s Kodo design language, reminiscent of the larger CX-60 and CX-90 models. Early sketches reveal a compact SUV characterized by smooth lines and a sporty, low stance, complete with a wider grille and slim LED headlights—a design echoing innovations from the upcoming CX-5.

The overall proportions suggest a youthful aesthetic, with a nearly coupe-like roofline descending toward the rear. Although sketch details can often be exaggerated, indications suggest the CX-20 will visually impress.

While the interior images are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated that the cabin will elevate comfort and technology. Known for producing upscale interiors, Mazda is expected to incorporate premium materials and a sleek, minimalistic layout. The CX-20 is anticipated to offer more room than the CX-3, addressing past concerns over its cramped rear seating and cargo capacity. Cutting-edge tech features, including a digital instrument cluster and Mazda’s latest infotainment system, are expected, although it’s still uncertain if the rotary dial interface will persist.

With an investment of $150 million into a production facility in Thailand, Mazda is signaling its commitment to new electrified models, implying that the CX-20 will utilize a platform prepared for hybrid technologies. According to the brand’s plans, the new model might include a mild-hybrid system paired with a new inline-four engine, potentially available in 1.5- or 2.0-liter variants.

The CX-20 will likely maintain a front-wheel-drive layout, with the possibility of all-wheel drive as an option. Though there is no confirmation regarding a plug-in hybrid variant, it remains a future possibility.

This segment is highly competitive, with the CX-20 set to confront formidable rivals such as the Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, Kia Stonic, Toyota Yaris Cross, and Ford Puma.

While Mazda has not disclosed a definitive launch date for the CX-20, indications suggest that the debut could occur within the next 18 months, primarily targeting the Asia-Pacific region, though other markets in the US and Europe could follow.
