The high-performance version of Volkswagen’s reborn electric Kombi – set to accelerate as quickly as a VW Golf GTI hot hatch – has been photographed with minimal disguise.

Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce a performance-oriented version of its electric ID. Buzz people mover – the rebirth of the classic Kombi – under the performance-oriented GTX badge.

Spotted testing in production-ready trim – with minimal camouflage, ahead of an unveiling expected in the coming months – the ID. Buzz GTX will gain a second electric motor for 250kW combined, all-wheel drive, and a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.4 seconds.

It is more power than a Volkswagen Golf R hot hatch – and similar acceleration to a Golf GTI – though the ID. Buzz GTX is expected to weigh more than 2.5 tonnes, or more than one and a half Golf R hatchbacks.

Expected to be based on the long-wheelbase, seven-seat ID. Buzz – due in Australia at the end of next year, or early in 2025 – the GTX will provide a healthy uplift over the 210kW and rear-wheel drive of the standard model.

It is set to be distinguished by a sportier design, highlighted by a new front end with a restyled lower bumper. Unique wheels are expected to feature on the production model.

As the flagship trim level in Volkswagen’s electric line-up, the ID. Buzz GTX is likely to inherit top-of-the-range luxury, convenience and design equipment found in the current range, including a 12.9-inch touchscreen on the dashboard.

A preview of the ID. Buzz GTX’s steering wheel has already been provided by Volkswagen, and it mirrors the design seen in the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX sports SUVs coming to Australia next year.

Although a slight increase in weight is expected due to the second electric motor, the improved performance will lead to quicker acceleration time, with Volkswagen confirming a 6.4-second 0-100km/h sprint – compared to 7.9sec in the regular long-wheelbase model.

Charging times for the ID. Buzz GTX are projected to remain consistent with the standard version, which has an 85kWh battery and a 200kW maximum DC charging capacity.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX is expected to be unveiled in the coming months – later this year or early next year – ahead of overseas showroom arrivals in 2024.

Australian deliveries are yet to be locked in, though it is on VW’s local wish list.
