Mercedes-AMG G63 orders resume in Australia after two-year pause

Order books for the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class have re-opened in Australia after a long hiatus – with prices more than $60,000 higher than they were two years ago.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class – sold exclusively in high-performance Mercedes-AMG G63 form – is now available to order again in Australia after a formal pause of more than two years.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has advised it has worked through enough backorders – and production has improved – to be able to re-open orders for its iconic model.

Buyers who place an order for a G63 today – at the time of publishing – can expect to take delivery between November 2023 and January 2024, pending any additional shipping or production delays.

The wait time stated of three to six months is a considerable improvement on the timeframe “significantly longer than 12 months” indicated in May 2023.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has not disclosed how many production slots it can make available new customers – or if there is a cap on new orders at all.

Last year 427 G-Class deliveries were reported in Australia, compared to 594 the year prior – equating to monthly averages of 36 and 50 respectively. So far this year it has reported just 120 deliveries.

The latest price for the AMG G63 is $363,591 plus on-road costs, applicable after July 1 due to an increase in the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold.

It is higher than the circa-$300,000 plus on-road costs sticker advertised in June 2021, prior to the closure of orders.

The customers on the wait list have changed in the meantime, as buyers who placed deposit prior to the mid-2021 closure cancelled their orders – and new customers took their place, and paid the higher prices advertised at the time they took over the order.
