Volkswagen Golf GTI price cut for first time since 2021

Volkswagen has cut the price of the latest Golf GTI in Australia for the first time since it launched during 2021.

The brand has confirmed more stock of the hot hatch is on the way during the third quarter of 2023, and is offering a $55,490 drive-away price between now and September 30.

That’s equivalent to a price cut of around $5000 relative to the $55,490 before on-roads sticker price – the first price cut for the Mk 8 GTI.

Volkswagen is expecting strong supply of the GTI over the coming months, meaning the Golf GTI should be available at dealers.

Power in the Golf GTI comes from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 180kW and 370Nm, mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive.

The Golf and Polo GTI are two of very few hot hatches currently in stock. Orders for the more powerful Golf R remain closed as Volkswagen works through a significant backlog; it’s the same story for the Hyundai i30 N with which the GTI goes head-to-head.

There are significant waits for the latest Honda Civic Type R, too. The Ford Focus ST is gone from Australia, and the Renault Megane RS and Ford Fiesta ST are dead worldwide.

Along with a manual price leader, Volkswagen used limited-edition cars such as the three-door GTI Original to keep the cost of entry to its long-running hatch low in Mk7 guise.

The manual died in Australia with the arrival of the Mk7.5 GTI, and the car’s base price broke $50,000 for the first time with the debut of the Mk8.
