Suzuki Jimny sets sales record, orders still paused on automatic models, five-door on track

The Suzuki Jimny pint-sized four-wheel-drive continues to set sales records even though orders have paused on automatic models until the backlog is cleared.

The Suzuki Jimny has set a new sales record for the pint-sized four-wheel-drive, eclipsing 700 deliveries in a given month for the first time amid a backlog of customer orders.

Official data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries shows 748 examples of the Suzuki Jimny were reported as sold last month – May 2023 – beating the previous high of 674 in September 2022.

The result is remarkable given the Suzuki Jimny automatic has not been available to order since the start of this year.

Suzuki Australia paused orders for automatic variants until it cleared the current backlog of customer deliveries.

Manual transmission variants of the Suzuki Jimny three-door are still available to order locally, but as for now there is no timeline of when automatics will come back on stream.

Drive understands orders for automatic versions of the Suzuki Jimny three-door have been paused to make way for the incoming Suzuki Jimny five-door due later this year.

The boss of Suzuki Australia, Michael Pachota, told Drive demand for the Suzuki Jimny five-door – due in local showrooms by the end of this year, pending any delays – is “off the charts”.

Even though price and equipment are yet to be announced, the executive said Suzuki dealers are receiving orders and expressions of interest “every day”.

Prices for the Suzuki Jimny five-door will be announced closer to local showroom arrivals, while specifications are expected to mirror the three-door model.
