VFACTS: Lexus breaks annual Australian sales record with four months to go

Lexus has reported more than 10,000 new luxury vehicles as sold in Australia in a calendar year for the first time in its 33-year history.

And if it continues its current momentum – doubling its sales so far this year compared to the same period in 2022 – it would be on track to deliver more than 14,000 cars by the end of this year.

The luxury division of the world’s largest car maker – Japanese giant Toyota – has reported 9985 vehicles as sold in Australia between January and August 2023, up 101.7 per cent on the same period in 2022 (4950 sales).

While it just fell short of five digits at the end of August, a Lexus spokesperson confirmed to Drive the 10,000th vehicle rolled off showroom floors on Friday 1 September.

Lexus Australia’s previous annual sales record as 9612 vehicles, set in 2019 – while it has also sold more than 9000 vehicles in a calendar year in 2021 and 2016, with 9290 and 9027 deliveries respectively.

The record result still trails its German luxury rivals BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, which have reported 16,686, 16,788 and 11,988 vehicles as sold respectively in the first eight months of this year.

The top-selling Lexus is the NX mid-sized SUV, with 4291 sales reported so far this year – up 99 per cent – and 866 deliveries in August 2023 alone, one of, if not the best monthly result on record for the model.

It is followed by the RX large SUV with 1892 sales, UX small SUV with 1643 sales, and ES mid-size sedan with 1233 deliveries reported.

The largest year-on-year sales growth was posted by the LX full-size four-wheel-drive, with 729 deliveries reported so far this year, up from 238 over the same period last year – though the new model wasn’t in showrooms until April 2022.

Lexus sits 19th overall on the year-to-date leaderboard, behind BMW, Mercedes-Benz Cars, Audi and Tesla (32,820, if its vehicles are classified as luxury cars) but ahead of Volvo (8005), Land Rover (5315) and Porsche (4201).
