More than 6000 examples of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute have been recalled after a rear axle oil leak was discovered, with the lubricant posing a risk of reducing braking performance.

Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia has recalled 6117 examples of its Mercedes-Benz X-Class, following the discovery of an oil leak from the dual-cab ute’s rear axle which could affect its braking performance.

The recall affects every example of the X-Class sold in Australia by Mercedes-Benz between early-2018 and May 2020 – encompassing the short-lived model’s run in local showrooms – though it does not affect its Nissan Navara twin.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear axle radial shaft ring may not be sealed adequately. This could cause an oil leak resulting in an unexpected reduction of braking performance.

“An unexpected reduction in braking performance could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

Mercedes-Benz has advised X-Class owners to contact their authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the work carried out as soon as possible, free of charge.

Alternatively, owners can contact Mercedes-Benz’s customer assistance centre by phone on 1300 300 896 or via email at [email protected] for more information.
