Built for Generations: Toyota Corolla Celebrates 60 Years with 2027 Special Edition

Toyota is marking six decades of the Corolla with a limited 60th Anniversary Special Edition for the 2027 model year, and the standard lineup now carries a starting price of $23,325 before options and fees.

The anniversary car, capped at 2,500 units in the US, is built on the Corolla SE Hybrid grade. It swaps the standard badging for 60th Anniversary badges, adds 18-inch machined black-finished alloy wheels, and dresses the seats in black and red sport fabric. Buyers choose between Ice Cap white or a new Supersonic Red reserved exclusively for this trim. Toyota has not announced pricing for the special edition yet; the car reaches dealerships in early 2027, after the rest of the 2027 lineup arrives this fall.

What the Anniversary Edition Adds

Beyond paint and wheels, the special edition comes standard with a 10.5-inch touchscreen running Toyota’s Audio Multimedia system, a step up from the 8-inch screen on lower trims. Anniversary-branded door sills and floor mats round out the package, along with sport seats already found on SE and XSE grades but finished in fabric unique to this model.

Corolla first went on sale in Japan in 1966 and grew into one of the best-selling nameplates in Toyota’s history, with tens of millions built worldwide across sedan, hatchback and wagon body styles. The anniversary edition gives Toyota a way to mark that run without changing the core formula: low running costs, a compact footprint, and a reputation for lasting well past 100,000 miles. Toyota builds the current Corolla on its TNGA-C platform, which the company credits for the car’s rigid structure, low center of gravity, and the handling that separates it from cheaper compacts.

Pricing Across the Range

Toyota builds the 2027 Corolla in eight versions: gas-powered LE, SE and XSE grades, plus Hybrid LE, SE and XLE, with AWD options on the Hybrid LE and SE. Base MSRP by grade, excluding a $1,295 dealer processing and handling fee:

  • Corolla LE: $23,325
  • Corolla SE: $25,765
  • Corolla XSE: $29,040
  • Corolla Hybrid LE: $25,175
  • Corolla Hybrid SE: $27,615
  • Corolla Hybrid XLE: $29,540
  • Corolla Hybrid LE AWD: $26,575
  • Corolla Hybrid SE AWD: $29,015

That range puts the Corolla within a few hundred dollars of a base Honda Civic LX and comfortably below a Hyundai Elantra SEL on sticker price, while the hybrid grades undercut most rival hybrid compacts by a wide margin once fuel savings are factored in over a typical ownership period.

Mileage and Powertrains

Gas Corolla models run a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, rated at 32 city/41 highway/35 combined mpg on the LE grade. Hybrid models pair a 1.8-liter engine with Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system for a combined 138 horsepower, rated at 53 city/46 highway/50 combined mpg on the Hybrid LE and XLE. All-wheel drive is available on the Hybrid LE and SE grades, giving buyers extra grip in wet or snowy climates without giving up most of the hybrid’s mileage advantage.

Drive modes on gas models include Normal, Eco and Sport, and the XSE adds paddle shifters for manual control over the CVT’s pre-set ratios. The suspension pairs MacPherson struts up front with a multi-link rear setup on most grades, a configuration Toyota carried over from the last Corolla redesign.

Standard Safety and Tech

Every 2027 Corolla ships with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which bundles pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alerts with steering assist, road sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard across the range, a feature still optional on some rivals in this class.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a 7-inch digital gauge cluster that grows to 12.3 inches on the XSE and Hybrid XLE. The bigger 10.5-inch center touchscreen comes standard on XSE, Hybrid XLE and the anniversary car, and can be added to SE and Hybrid SE. Higher grades add a wireless phone charger, a power moonroof, and heated eight-way power seats trimmed in Toyota’s SofTex material.

Toyota backs the Corolla with a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and free scheduled maintenance for the first year or 10,000 miles through ToyotaCare, plus two years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Colors and Availability

Corolla and Corolla Hatchback add a new black shade called Inked for 2027, joining Blueprint, Wind Chill Pearl, Ice Cap, Ruby Flare Pearl, Underground, Classic Silver Metallic and Celestite. SE and XSE grades offer two-tone paint combinations across most of that palette. Toyota builds the gas Corolla at its Blue Springs, Mississippi plant and the Hybrid at the Takaoka plant in Japan.

The standard 2027 lineup reaches dealerships this fall. Toyota has not set a firm date for the 60th Anniversary Special Edition beyond “early 2027,” and pricing will follow closer to launch. With only 2,500 units planned for the US, buyers who want the anniversary badge and the exclusive red paint will need to act quickly once dealers open orders.
