Three pedals. Six speeds. Endless smiles. The manual 911 Carrera S returns to North America

Porsche is putting a clutch pedal back in the 911 Carrera S. The new MT Package pairs a six-speed manual gearbox with the Carrera S’s 473-horsepower twin-turbo flat six, and it lands in both coupe and Cabriolet form. Pricing starts at $167,100 for the coupe and $181,000 for the Cabriolet, both figures excluding a $2,350 fee for delivery, processing and handling. Orders open today at Porsche Centers across North America, and Porsche expects deliveries to begin by the end of 2026.

The 992.2-generation Carrera S launched with an eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission only. Porsche now adds the manual back to the lineup for North America, a market-specific move the company attributes to customer requests. Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said: “As a lifelong driving enthusiast I’m personally excited to announce the return of the manual transmission to the Carrera S. While some brands are abandoning the manual, we are proud to continue offering three pedals in a range of products that speaks to different use cases. Managing a clutch and shift lever isn’t for everyone, but for the drivers who want it there really is no substitute.”

A Manual Built Specifically for the S

The six-speed unit comes from the 911 Carrera T, but Porsche pairs it here with more power and a different set of standard equipment. The Carrera S with MT Package ships exclusively with rear-wheel drive and adds rear-axle steering, a PASM Sport suspension that drops ride height by 10mm, a walnut shift handle, the Sport Chrono Package and unique exhaust tuning as standard fitment. Center-lock wheels appear on a Carrera S for the first time, shaving more than 17 lbs over the standard wheels. A SportDesign front fascia and a red “S” badge on the rear separate the car visually from other Carrera S variants, a detail Porsche says came directly from feedback among North American enthusiasts.

The coupe tips the scales at 3,327 lbs, just 11 lbs over the 911 Carrera T coupe. That’s a small number to hang a lot on, but it points to how closely Porsche built this car around the same lightweight approach as the T, rather than treating the manual as an afterthought bolted onto the standard S.

Power, Brakes and Seats

The twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat six carries over from the standard Carrera S at 473 horsepower. Standard brakes use cast iron discs measuring 408mm up front and 380mm at the rear, with six-piston fixed calipers on the front axle and four-piston calipers on the rear. Buyers who want more stopping power can add Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes and carbon fiber bucket seats as options.

Seating starts with a four-way Sport Seats Plus setup as standard. Porsche offers 14-way Sport Seats, 18-way Sport Seats Plus and carbon fiber Folding Lightweight Bucket seats as added-cost upgrades for buyers who want more support or less mass in the cabin.

A Shift Pattern Hidden in the Puddle Lights

Porsche built a handful of details around the manual gearbox itself. Puddle lights under the mirrors cast the six-speed shift pattern onto the ground when the doors open, a small touch aimed squarely at manual-transmission buyers. Inside, Plaid Sport-Tex fabric seat centers with Chalk stripes match the seat belts and stitching, set against Ceramica trim with black brushed aluminum accents. The Sport Chrono clock on the dashboard gains a white accent ring, and the door sill guards come finished in brushed black aluminum.

Where the Carrera S Fits in Porsche’s Manual Lineup

Porsche now sells seven 911 variants with a conventional manual gearbox in North America. The 911 Carrera T coupe and Cabriolet sit at the entry point of that range. The 911 GT3, 911 GT3 with Touring Package and 911 GT3 S/C occupy the other end, pairing a manual with a motorsport-derived engine and chassis. The new Carrera S with MT Package slots between those two groups, prioritizing driving feel over outright acceleration while adding more power than the Carrera T and a longer list of personalization options.

The move runs against a broader industry pattern. Most automakers have trimmed manual-transmission options over the past decade as take rates dropped and dual-clutch gearboxes closed the performance gap. Porsche’s decision to add a manual to a mainstream Carrera S, rather than restrict it to track-focused GT models, gives buyers who want three pedals a wider range of price points to choose from.

Pricing and How to Order

The 2027 911 Carrera S with MT Package starts at $167,100 for the coupe and $181,000 for the Cabriolet, both excluding the $2,350 destination fee. Porsche Cars North America supports 204 independently owned dealerships in the US, along with five Porsche studios and six satellite stores, where buyers can place orders now. Deliveries are expected to begin by the end of 2026.

For buyers cross-shopping the Carrera S range, the MT Package adds the manual gearbox and the extra standard equipment bundled into the package on top of the standard PDK-equipped S. Porsche’s configurator lets buyers spec any car in the current 911, Macan, Cayenne, Panamera or Taycan lineup, including the new Carrera S variant, ahead of placing an order through a dealer.
